Husker "Small Sports" Weekend Preview -- March 29-April 4

This is just a little experiment I'm trying at bringing a little bit of a look at the "other" Husker sports, as Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Volleyball tend to dominate Corn Nation.  However, there are hundreds of other excellent Husker athletes that deserve some props, so over time, I hope that I can turn this into a regular column on here.  Of course, my busy schedule has kept me from learning all I would like about the smaller sports thus far, I'm working as hard as I can to catch up.

For the early installments, I thought I'd start simple by just previewing what's going on in the rest of the Husker sports world this week.

If you have any suggestions for this "small sports" column (including a name), helpful criticisms, or think it's a waste of bytes and want me to stop, please drop a comment.

First off, it's a big weekend for the 14th-ranked Husker Women's Gymnastics team, as they head to Norman to defend their title the Big XII championships tonight at 7 PM.  The host 9th-ranked, undefeated OU Sooners are the favorites at the conference championships, but the Huskers have won 8 of the 11 conference titles.  The meet will be aired on tape-delay on Fox Sports Net -- the schedule can be found in the Huskers.com preview.

Outdoor Track & Field started their season at 9 AM today at the Hastings College Bronco Relays.  The Men's team is ranked #17 in the preseason rankings, while the women come in at #30.  During the indoor season, the men finished 17th at the NCAA Indoor Championships, while the women finished 52nd.  The season will continue on Friday at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, with Arizona (Men 51, Women 32), Arizona State (Men 8, Women 2), and Georgia (Men 6, Women 46).

The top-ranked Husker Bowling team is having its final preparation this weekend for the NCAA Championships(in Omaha on April 10-12), with an exhibition against Husker bowling alums at the East Campus Lanes in Lincoln.
Trivia: The Husker bowlers have finished in the top 3 of 80% of the events they've ever participated in, and won the first two NCAA bowling titles (2004 and 2005).

The Husker Softball team hosts 12th-ranked Oklahoma today in a doubleheader at 1PM at Bowlin Stadium.  The Huskers have won 43 of their last 47 games at home, and has been 15-2 against Big XII competition in Lincoln during that same time.  Huskers.com has a detailed game preview if you want more information.  The Huskers then host weekday double headers on Monday against Northern Iowa (2 PM) and Wednesday against South Dakota State
(4 PM).

The women's Golf team continues to work its Spring tournament schedule at this weekend's Mountain View Collegiate tournament in Tucson, AZ, starting at 9 am CDT both today and Sunday at the Mountain View Golf Club.  The Mountain View tournament features 18 schools, including 9 Big XII schools.  The Huskers then get a day off before heading to St. George, UT, for the 12-team BYU Dixie Classic at Entrada at Snow Canyon.

The men's Golf team heads to Wichita, KS, for the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic at the Wichita Country Club.  The 15-team field features 2 other Big XII opponents (Iowa State and Kansas State), and the event tees off Monday and Tuesday at 8 AM.

The Men's Tennis team visits Wichita State today for a 1 PM match, getting ready for a beginning Big XII play, starting with Oklahoma State on Friday, April 4.  The Huskers dropped out of the national rankings following a late February losing streak, but have won 3 of their last 4 and 4 of their last 6 matches.

The 61st-ranked Women's Tennis team lost only their second match of 2008, 7-0 to 27th-ranked Texas A&M.  The women head from College Station to Austin today to face 17th-ranked Texas.  Nebraska has never beaten Texas (0-10 all-time).

I don't mind

it.

I don't know if you've noticed, and I haven't said anything about it, but if you check out the SB Nation MLB blogs, they've been updated to the format we'll be upgraded to sometime in the next few months.

It leaves itself open to a lot more possibilities than we currently have, including accounts that are shared across the network.

I've taken a brief look

at the new SB Nation interface.  I noticed that they're rolling it out for the new MLB season, and took a quick look yesterday.  When I have some time, I'll take a longer look at it so I can get acquainted with all the features.  I'm guessing they'll upgrade the college blogs in the summer, after college sports seasons are all over (or they'll upgrade in the middle of the baseball regionals).

yeah

I'm thinking they'll hit just about the time things heat up in college baseball. I don't know that, of course, I'm speculating.

A name for this..... hhmmm...... if we come up with something good, people will pay attention to it.

I've been thinking...

..."Out in the Cornfield" or something like that, to go with the Corn Nation theme.  ("Children of the Corn," however, was right out.

Corn Kernels?

"small" sports.... just doesn't fit, but the idea behind a bunch of smaller objects that make up a whole. How 'bout something in that direction?
