Big 12 Baseball Batting Stats As Of March 11, 2008
This time with commentary. I think it's interesting to go through the data visualization and get an idea of where the teams are before we head into Big 12 conference play. The chart is sorted by batting average - I haven't figured out how to get it to run to three decimal points, and I'm not sure that's possible.
If you're using a Mac, use the command key to select multiples.
Comments:
- As you go through the data, you realize that Missouri is having a helluva time generating offense. Their strength is in their pitching obviously.
- Nebraska, Texas, and Missouri are much lower on the homer side than they should be. Especially Texas, that's rather surprising.
- Texas is the only team with more strike outs than walks. I was surprised by comparison the low number of walks that Nebraska has when compared to other teams.
- You would think that a normal progression in baseball would be that there would be more doubles than triples, and more triples than homers, but for several teams that's not true. Perhaps a reflection of the propensity to play small ball by some teams - select doubles, triples and homers, and compare Nebraska to Oklahoma State.
I look forward to any comments y'all might have.
I'll update pitching stats in this format later tonight.

Doubles/Tripples vs. homers
I think a lot of this is because of the fields the teams play on. Texas plays in a notoriously cavernous field and thus tends to get a lot of doubles and triples and fewer homers. I cannot speak as to the other teams.
Also, I think your statement about Texas and their walk/strikeout ratio is backwards. They seem to be the only team with more walks than strikeouts.

yeah
you're right. The problem is getting the formatting right while trying to figure out the stats.
What's missing from Texas is Kyle Russel's home run hitting. Last year he was crushing the ball from the start of the season - this year.... seems to be starting in a slump.
