Search 2007: Top Ten Reasons Turner Gill is Nebraska's Next Head Coach (And Five Why He Won't)

Tom Osborne says that Bo Pelini wasn't offered the job. Neither was Turner Gill. For the record, neither have I.

Not all that shocking, is it? If you wrecked your car, and you're determined to get three estimates you don't automatically take the first without checking out the other two, now do you? Oh, you do. Well, Tom Osborne is more patient than you!

Speaking of patient, have you ever seen Turner Gill lose his temper? Ever? No? That's because he's patient too, and in honor of that patience, we have the Top Ten Reasons as to why Gill is our next head coach (as well as five reasons he won't.)

  1. Beat Pelini in arm-wrestling competition, fair and square (as if there's any other way).
  1. So full of gooey-icky goodness that mothers everywhere will send their sons to play for Nebraska.
  1. Already has a whole wardrobe of red clothes ready to wear.
  1. Intricate understanding of everything option allows him to assist defensive coordinator defending the spread offense, something humongously lacking in previous regime.
  1. It's 'bout time for Nebraska's first black head coach and he's the guy.
  1. Said something negative about another kid when he was in eighth grade. That was the last time he did that.
  1. Not an offensive 'system' guy. Can adapt, therefore offense doesn't take two years to learn and have a season to play before reaching comfort level of execution.
  1. If he's successful, he'll be around a loooooonnnng time, providing that security-blanket consistency Nebraskans want in a head coach.
  1. Understands every inch of Nebraska tradition. When he says the walk-on program will be brought back, and it isn't any higher than it was under Callahan, we'll accept it because it's Turner Gill saying it. Hard feeling begone!
  1. Scoring Explosion? You know it!

And Five Reasons He Won't

  1. Tom Osborne likes Gill too much as a person to put him into the grinder that is Nebraska football.
  1. As long as Tom Osborne is around, Turner Gill will never get credit for success. It'll still be Osborne's success. If he fails, it'll be Gill's failure. It's a no-win situation for Gill.
  1. Not enough head coaching experience. Buffalo? Ha!
  1. In another year, he'll have an established head coaching resume, get more money with less pressure, less expectations, all more conducive for success. That's a wining situation.
  1. The idea that Gill can magically re-create the past and therefore Osborne/Devaney success sets expectations so high that no one including Osborne hissself could ever reach them. Why set himself up for failure?

His stock is rising

Osborne mentioned that he talks to Turner almost weekly. So, it's no surprise to see him on the "short list."

I agree with your reasons on why he won't get the job. I think Tom may just be giving Gill a little publicity boost. If his name is thrown around the Nebraska job, he may be more seriously considered when positions at other schools open up.

other schools whose radar Gill is on...

via various web sites, I have seen TG listed as possible HC coach candidate for Washington State and for Duke.....

I've 'turnered' over a new leaf!

Really, the more I think about it, when it comes down to it, if OZ thinks he's qualified, I think Turner would be the absolute best guy to have as HC.

He's ALL Nebraska, though he wasn't born there. A successful TG as a long term leader of Big Red is the most inspiring story I can imagine; in fact, it almost gives me goose bumps thinking about it--better than a 'bogasm'!. Husker Nation would be IN LOVE!

(p.s., just win baby...)

As I've said, I also like Bo P and Brian Kelly alot--but I would love to see Turner given the opportunity and make it work.

His high character traits would represent NE extremely well

Turner

is appearently the leading candidate along with Jim Grobe according to ESPN. Bo didn't do well in an interview and is reportedly out of the picture. They also say that Brian Kelly will get interviewed (although the LJS has an article about him and he claims he has never been contacted by or about the NU job) and possibly Patterson from TCU. Gill has always been my choice with Bo second. I am not impressed with Grobe and hope it is anyone but him. Kelly would be a good choice but he would be my third. I am definetly not sold on the theory that NU must hire a proven head coach, wasn't sold on that when we hired BC. I dont think you can find a better fit at this time then Turner.

Grobe...

My main reservation with him is his age; he's pushing 60 I think.  That means, if he did well and stayed, your're looking at 10-15 years or so.
Plus, he doesn't seem like a very animated guy.

But, he is very methodical and has done very well at Wake, so I can see why they want to give him a look.

Maybe

we dont have to worry about him anymore. Another board had a poster that said WFAN radio from New York said he is going to Arkansas. Another said wikipedia confirmed it but I couldn't find that anywhere. Man all the rumors are getting crazy.

Michigan has gotten permission to talk to Les Miles but not until after the game Saturday so maybe TO is just waiting until after that to announce BO as HC (another rumor I have heard).

Jim Grobe

is younger than Pete Carroll. No one seems ready to put that guy out to pasture any time soon.  I don't think Grobe will be the hire, but age won't be the reason.

Can you hear this, Denver, or shall I turn it up for you?

ESPN's Pat Forde...

...says differently.  According to Forde, it's a two-man race between Pelini and Gill.  The fact the coaching search is on pause until Saturday speaks volumes.  Osborne is waiting until Saturday for a reason, and my guess is that it's because one or more people he wants to talk to are unavailable until after Saturday since their seasons are still in progress.

My DREAM

Turner HC
Pelini DC

Could Dr Tom make that happen!

Not likely....but I can dream.

I think

no matter what we will all be happy with whomever TO chooses as coach.  He was brought on to be a pacifier to an angry fan base and intends to make sure all the spilled milk gets cleaned up.

I am definately pro Bo, but I would also be just as happy with Gill, Grobe et al.

I really think the rumor mill got out of hand when people started following airplanes around the country....my advice:  believe half of what you see and none of what you hear!

WE WANT BO!  WE WANT BO!  WE WANT BO!  WE WANT BO!
