Fire Bill Callahan! Oh... wait....

Here's what they're saying about the firing of Bill Callahan:

Stewart Mandel sums it up very well:

Along the way, he stopped recruiting in-state players, eliminated Nebraska’s steep tradition of walk-ons, disillusioned former Huskers greats … basically, it was a four-year nightmare, and I’m sure Nebraska fans were thrilled to wake up this morning knowing it was finally over.

Can't disagree with that sentiment. His picks for our next coach come down to Jim Grobe of Wake Forest or Turner Gill.

Chip Brown gives us a little bit different list of names

The hot young names out there are Boise State's Chris Petersen, Cincinnati's Brian Kelly and Rutgers' Greg Schiano.

If calls aren't being made to those coaches, then Osborne is short-circuiting his own search. Guys like Petersen, Kelly and Schiano will respect and embrace the Nebraska tradition. You don't have to have someone who has worked at Nebraska to know that.

but states that the problem with Pelini and Gill is that neither have a proven track record.

Oklahoma blogger Crimson and Cream Machine won't miss Callahan at all.

Husker bloggers Big Red Network, Husker Mike, Big Red Anaysis, Midwest Coast Bias podcast, Hi Plains Drifter, and DXP all chime in on the events.

You know what's missing here. What's missing is all the angry, hateful "don't let the door hit you in the ass" statements that bloggers are supposed to be known for  (or at least that's how we're portrayed). Look around and you're not seeing that. You'd think at least one Nebraska blogger would have let loose with a tirade. Even Fire Bill Callahan doesn't rave on about it. Neither does EDSBS.

Reasonable bloggers? That seems so wrong, doesn't it?

Jim Grobe...

is too friggin' old, and there's nothing special about the O they run or Wake, FTM.

too old?

Grobe is 55, how is that anywhere near "too old" in a profession where 40 is considered young?

More importantly, why does an offense need to be special? Grobe has turned around a historically door-mat of a program and consistently gets the most out of his players. He doesn't get blue-chip recruits, but do you remember how hard his over-matched team played against Nebraska back in September?

Why no anger and venom?

I think we're all tired of this mess; we got all that out of our system over the last couple of months, and now we're ready to look ahead to the future.  Just about everybody knew this was a nightmare, and we finally are able to put this thing behind us.

I really get the feeling that Husker Nation is united more today than it's been since September 2003.

No reason to

be angry anymore. I for one am just glad its over. If we would have kept him then I would be throwing anger and venom. Now I am more focused on who will be the next coach. Some interesting names being thrown around today. Of course everyone knows I am hoping for Turner Gill but would also be happy with Bo Pelini. Anyone else and it will depend on who it is. We will just have to wait and see. My guess is we will know by the end of the week. Just a gut feeling. Might be gas though who knows. ;)

I am tired

of hearing about hiring a coach with no track record and the revolving door theory. There is way to much proof out there that coaches with no track record can be good head coaches. Heres a short list:

Bob Stoops
Mark Mangino
Tommy Tubberville
Kirk Frenetz
Joe Paterno
Nick Saban
Greg Schiano
Bobby Petrino
Tom O'Brien
Phillip Fulmer
Bill Snyder
and of course TOM OSBORNE

As far as the revolving door, why would we keep a coach who isn't any good or isn't moving us in the right direction. I dont understand the thinking behind the "dont fire so and so it just makes the revolving door open.". If the guy isn't doing the job get rid of him and try to get someone in here who will.

Agree about...

the end to the anger and venom, but if the LJS board is any indication of the future--which it probably is--just expect there to be split factions on whoever the next HC is.

I like BO, I like Brian Kelly, and I could go along with Turner, especially since he would be the most unifying candidate--one would think.

Think they should get somebody in his forties so he could be here for a long time provided he's successful.

Shawn Watson would be a great head coach

No one is mentioning him for some reason. I think he would be outstanding.

Watson might be good...

but if in the extremely unlikely event that St. OZ gave him the nod over Gill or BO, the fallout would be unbearable:  "the FALLOUT, god save us from the FALLOUT...!"

Not yet his time

The coaching world is one where you put in your dues, and Watson just isn't ready for a big-time program like Nebraska. He's been on staff for one season, and he wasn't even calling plays during that time. I think it's a long-shot that Pelini or Muschamp (or any other candidate that isn't currently a head coach) gets the job, let alone an unproven and under-the-radar choice like Watson.

Still, he'll be around if the next coach wants him. I see Watson as the most likely current assistant to be retained going into next season.

And the final scene at the Hawks front door,

All the staff lined up just to say goodbye,

A tiny little tear, then a sparkle in his eye.

He said, 'NOOOO-body knows me, NOOOO-body understands,

Li'l Red people were sure good to me, oh I wanna shake some hands......

Somebody line 'em up, line 'em all up, whooooa, line 'em up, line 'em all up....."
