The Saturday Osborne-Callahan Meeting

I'm not sure, but I think Nebraska fans are more interested in Saturday's meeting between Tom Osborne and Bill Callahan than tomorrow's Nebraska-Colorado matchup.  Will Callahan survive?  Does the coaching search start in less than 48 hours?  Every TV station will set up operations outside Memorial Stadium to await any potential announcement or clues from people leaving the building.

Personally, I think the focus on Saturday is a waste of time.  I don't think anything happens on Saturday, irregardless of what happens tomorrow.

Why?  First of all, I believe Tom Osborne when he says that he wouldn't make any decision before the end of the season.  That doesn't mean that he hasn't been thinking about things and looking into the situation.  Saturday's meeting is the opportunity for Osborne to talk to Callahan and his staff as to what happened this season and how the group intend to address the many problems that face the football program.  Up until now, the season was still underway and the coaching staff was focused on the next game.  Saturday is really the first opportunity for Osborne to gather input from the coaches.

Also, some in-state players will be traveling home after returning from Colorado to enjoy the holiday weekend with their family.  No way any decision is made without informing the team right away.  (Remember four years ago when the rumor mill ran wild until a press conference the next day where Benard Thomas asked Steve Pederson about his decision?)  A team meeting will immediately follow the decision, followed closely by a press conference.

On Saturday morning, the Bill Callahan show is going to be filmed at the HuskerVision studio.  Four years ago, Nebraska had to yank the Frank Solich show off the air after it had already been taped and sent out for broadcast.  Since Nebraska loses money if the commercials don't air, I would expect nothing to happen until after the show airs in Lincoln and Omaha on Sunday.

Saturday is also the Nebraska-Creighton basketball game, which is one of the high points of basketball season in Omaha.  Osborne spent much of this year working with Creighton's athletic department as a mentor to coaches like Dana Altman.  I just don't see any way Osborne does anything to divert interest from this basketball game.

My guess...nothing happens this weekend.  Monday afternoon at the earliest, and maybe not until later in the week.

If you think

that TO hasn't been talking to BC about changes that need to be made to insure his being here then you are crazy. The AD and the coach meet constantly during the season. The staff and TO just met this last week during the off week. Do you think noone brought up the future? Come on man this is Utopia its the real world and bosses talk to employees it doesn't matter if its during the season or not. Why would TO delay making a decision beyond Saturday? If we are going to have a change it needs to be done soon so that the new coaches can get to recruiting and if BC is going to be here that needs to be announced asap so that those already being recruited can decide if they are still coming and the staff can get to replacing those who have dropped out already.

I dont care what happens on Saturday, you will know within an hour what was said in the meeting. Someone will leak it to the media and it will be all over. Isn't the meeting at like 10? If so then you will know by 1 what was said.

Want to make a little wager on weather or not BCs fate is known on Saturday?

I've already given my reasons why...

...this won't be announced tomorrow.  Maybe I'm wrong.  You are right that we'll probably hear tomorrow what was said in this meeting, but I don't think there will be any decisions made or announced tomorrow.

Two days isn't going to make much of a difference, as there will be more questions than answers until the new staff is hired.

For what it's worth...

...buzz is building that this will all be done tomorrow morning...

I dont...

know for sure that his fate is going to be known tomorrow but had a pretty good feeling that it would be and thus the bet and now it is looking more and more like it will be. I just dont see that there is any reason at all to wait. TO already has his mind made up by now and what is the point of waiting. Not to interfere with the NU-CU bball game? No that is not a good reason. You just dont hold the press conference during the game. People will still watch the game even if it is announced before or there is a press conference scheduled for afterwards. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I agree

...with taflorom, we'll know by Saturday afternoon. That doesn't mean the news will come in the form of a press conference or official statement, but considering the level of speculation and attention given to this meeting, the result will be impossible to hide.

Also, "irregardless" is a double-negative. It doesn't make sense. That's four years of an NWU English degree right there!

Well...

I am off to basketball practice before the big game. Will see you all on the game day thread. Prayed for a Husker victory at Thanksgiving supper last night, was met by a big AMEN after saying that. Well hope you all got way too fat yesterday and see you at 11.
