Catching Up With Chadron State's Danny Woodhead

I noticed that ESPN's College Game Day will have an interview with Chadron State's Danny Woodhead this Saturday. Woodhead is a Division II running back who is nearing the NCAA rushing all-time rushing record for all Divisions. He currently has 7,233 career rushing yards, which is just 121 yard short of R. J. Bowers of Division III Grove City College who set the record of 7,353 during the 1997-2000 seasons.

Woodhead's season to date:

Carries: 126
Rushing yards: 868
Yards Per Carry: 6.9
Rushing td's: 12

Receptions: 15
Yards: 297
Yards Per Catch: 19.8
Touchdowns: 1

His coach, Bill O' Boyle, is more concerned about Chadron continuing to win games:

"It’d be really nice to see him get it because then some of the distractions would stop. If he stays healthy there’s no doubt that he will get it and he’ll continue to add to it," O’Boyle said. "But right now, we’re 5-0 and 2-0 in the RMAC. It’s our goal and Danny’s, too, to be undefeated, and that’s the record we care the most about."

I interviewed Woodhead after Chadron lost last season in the Division playoffs to Northwest Missouri.  The guy was gracious and complimentary to his teammates and coaches. If asked right now, he'd probably echo his coach's comments above about how his goals are to win a Division II championship along with his teammates.

The Chadron State Eagles are currently ranked fourth in Division II behind Grand Valley, North Dakota and North Alabama. They are 5-0, 2-0 in the RMAC conference, and play against Western New Mexico this Saturday.  Live stats of the game will be available here.
