Huskers Take Series From Cowboys

Apparently moving Johnny Dorn from Sunday to Saturday is the key to this team succeeding. Tony Watson threw a brilliant game on Friday, striking out 12 Cowboys and allowing two runs, while Dorn struck out eight with two runs. Matt Foust also struck out four in relief today.

Oklahoma State has won their last eight consecutive Big 12 conference series dating back to last season. They're now on the verge of being swept -- which hasn't happened since exactly one year ago at Baylor.

Keep in mind, Oklahoma State is a team that came into this series at the top of the Big 12, largely due to their excellent offense. The Cowboys were hitting .354 as a team, with six starters over .371 on the season. The Huskers held an offense that had been scoring nearly 10 runs a game to only two. That's very impressive.

Nebraska closes out the series on Easter Sunday at 1:05 p.m. CDT. Andrew Oliver (5-0, 4.85 ERA, 29 K, 29.2 IP), a freshman southpaw, will take the mound for the Cowboys. While Nebraska's starter hasn't been announced, it's likely that Drew Bowman (4-1, 3.82 ERA, 26 K, 33.0 IP) will get the ball.

Nebraska will go for their first Big 12 sweep since beating Texas Tech in three games at the end of last April.

Oklahoma State

The Cowboy line-up is a real killer's row.  When they visited Lawrence they kept the pressure on the Jayhawk pitchers practically every inning.  They took two of three here.  Their pitching is not so terrible either.  I don't understand why they have such a high RPI number.

The only weakness I saw on their team was their infield defense, which was truely awful.  It didn't matter how hard or in what direction a ground ball was hit, every time the Jayhawks put one in play there was about a 50% chance something good was going to happen.  There is a heckler who comes to most KU games and he drives me pretty well insane, but he does know the game.  About mid-way through the second game he started to remind the OSU pitchers that the only way they were going to get out of jams was by striking out the batter in front of them because, "You know you can't trust those guys behind you."  It was funny because it was true.  I don't remember how many errors were credited but I saw at least six or seven misplayed grounders in two games I attended.

Normally on game days

I am either down at Hoglund watching my beloved Jayhawks or listening to them on the radio.  Sadly KU does not webcast video of their games like some other schools.

By the way, if you are coming to Lawrence to watch the NU series let me know.  Be happy to catch a game or two with you.  The series will almost certainly determine if KU makes the Big-12 tournament field so it should be intense.
