Steve Pederson Fired - Nebraskans Party in the Streets
As I'm sure you all know by now, Harvey Perlman has fired Steve Pederson. Well, technically he asked him to resign and he did, but why split hairs.
![]() |
What I've been told is that there was enough money given to the University to buy out Steve's contract AND pay off the current stadium expansion project, the figure somewhere around $40 million.
I was wondering how I'd feel about this when I got the news, and I got the news today as I was driving across Wisconsin to a customer site. After I hung up for the second time in four minutes, an overwhelming feeling of joy hit me. It was downright giddiness.
I've been witness to enough layoffs and firings throughout my career that I know you're not supposed to enjoy them. They're not fun no matter how they're handled. You're supposed to shake the person's hand, say you're sorry that it didn't work out, and wish them luck on their next endeavor, just like Harvey Perlman did. In the case of Steve Pederson, I can't imagine that Nebraskans aren't partying in the streets. The only bad thing I can think about this is that Pederson didn't erect a statue of himself that we could enjoy tearing down.
I see at Husker Extra that big-time contributor Dan Cook isn't happy about the firing. He wanted Pederson and Callahan to have one more year to see if they could be successful.
I hate to sound cliche'd but this one wasn't about wins and losses. It was about morale in the athletic department which was plummeting since Pederson's contract had been renewed. Will the team play better because we've fired our much-hated athletic director? We won't know that until Saturday, but their season started going down the tubes when the contract extensions came out.
Low morale is a life-sucking illness for any organization, and today was a big step forward in killing that illness. You tell me if you feel any better about the future of the program.
In the four years since firing Frank Solich and becoming the most hated man in Nebraska because of a protracted search for a new head coach, Steve Pederson failed to make any effort to make that right. Instead of once being contrite about how he'd handled things, he remained too confident, and that arrogance cast a pall over the athletic department, and with that the state of Nebraska. I fail to see how giving Pederson another year would have made any difference, other than it would have driven more people away.
I've already been asked if Bill Callahan is a lame duck coach. We need to see how the rest of the year works out. If they can save this season (and therefore this team), then Dan Cook may at least get one half of his wish. If Bill Callahan is still here next season it wouldn't bother me (although he needs to make some other changes) because it will mean that he's salvaged the season.
Does firing Pederson solve all of the problems facing Husker football? No, but it's a darn good first step.
All I know for sure is that I'm surprised at my own giddiness.
Party on, dudes!!!!

Turner Gill
would NOT be a good choice. What would he do, run the option? BO will not move laterally to another DC job, he wants to be a HC.
I really think they will go after BO P, all of Husker Nation would back that.
You could almost make a case that that is why Perlman was encouraged from those above him to get rid of Pedey so they could go after BO.
Just a hypothesis.

Just because
someone comes from the Osborne/Solich era doesn't mean the only offense they know is the option. Look at what he is doing at Buffalo. He is running some of the West Coast, a little power running and yes some option, it is a mix of all three and it seems to be working.
"He would not be a good choice" is only your opinion. Mine is that he is the best choice and was the best choice after Solich was fired. He would be a damn good coach for NU as far as I am concerned.

Of course...
you're entitled to your opinion. However, I don't think you have much evidence to back it up. "Look at what he is doing at Buffalo." Okay, his team is 3-4 with victories over Ohio, Toledo, and Temple and losses to Baylor and Ball State. In 2006, his team beat only Temple and Kent State for a 2-10 record. I'll grant that Buffalo is a hard place to generate success, but shouldn't the next Husker coach have proven to have some success somewhere? Again, Turner may turn out to be a great coach. He may be coach at Nebraska down the road. But what, other than his ties to "the glory days" warrants considering him for this position? What makes you think "he is the best choice"?

Just don't think
TG has built a credible enough resume as an HC, obviously. Yeah, if he turns Buffalo into a 9-10 win team for 3-5 years, etc, etc. I think Brian Kelly would be great, but NE Fan would probably not go for that; he's not a bad a$$ and runs the spread. Husker Fan is crying for SMASH MOUTH FB, as if anybody was running that anymore. OU doesn't even run smash mouth anymore.
I think Husker Fan wants BO P, since he's a bad a$$ and great D guy. He's been in the pros, at OU, at LSU; he's hasn't been an HC, but has alot of cred otherwise.
I've heard Bobby Petrino's name being suggested by Husker Fan, and he's sort of in the OZ mold.

Hey man...
I get the feeling from your post that you did not get to see the press conference, you still can at koln/kgin 10/11 news from Lincoln. After watching it and seeing Perlman avoid every question about the football program and the coaches I would say that they have been told that they are gone after the season. This is just my opinion from watching the pc. Also he did finally say that the new AD even if he was just an interim would get to evaluate the football program at seasons end and fire and hire a new coach if he felt the need. I also got the feeling that TO is going to be the next AD if only on an interim basis. Perlman said he always ask Tom for advice concerning matters of the athletic department and when asked directly if he is going to or has offered the job to Tom he hesitated and then stated he did not want to get into that right now. If you are going to seek his advice all the time why not just offer him the job?
GREAT MOMENT IN HUSKER HISTORY AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED.

you're right
I've been at work until just a bit ago.
I don't think the coaches have been told anything. Perlman did answer that question. He said that he's not in the position to evaluate people who coach and that he'll leave that to someone else. Wise choice on his part.
We're not going to be firing these guys tomorrow or next week, so stop worrying about that.
If you read between the lines, Tom Osborne is already the interim AD. Fact is, Tom may not be the best choice. That will all come out in the next few weeks. Patience is a virtue. :)

Maybe...
the board of regents and TO couldn't agree yet on how long he was to be here "grooming" the next AD. Maybe they wanted him here for 4 years (the rumor) and he only wanted to be here for 2 and then let the new guy take over. Maybe they couldn't agree who the next guy should be. Maybe that is why it was not announced yesterday that Tom is the next AD.

if Tom Osborne
isn't the next AD or the interim AD, are you going to be disappointed?

Yes...
I would have been. I will be disappointed if Turner Gill is not the next head coach. I will be disappointed if it rains all day Friday when we are supposed to have our company golf outing. But no matter life will go on. It will be interesting to see who is the coach next year. I will be highly disappointed if it is still BC. Then life might begin to crumble and I will start drinking and smoking again and live in a gutter.....

I'm not as happy as I thought I would be...
Anybody who follows my personal blog or read my postings on Mike Nolan's Husker mailing list knows that I've despised Steve Pederson for years. I've had a "Fire Steve" bumper sticker on my car for nearly 3 years now. My wife has a "Fire Steve" coffee mug at her desk at work. We even had a "Fire Steve" shirt for our dog.
Yep, I sang a little "Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead" along with Kevin Kugler yesterday afternoon, but that was the extent of it. Firing Steve Pederson won't help the football team tackle Javorskie Lane. It won't help Bill Callahan figure out how to score a touchdown before the Huskers are down 38-0.
A lot of fans thought Steve Pederson was a great hire when he arrived in Lincoln. He was "one of us", he understood Nebraska. He understood the meaning of tradition. But he betrayed the fans, he betrayed Tom Osborne, he betrayed the football program. He payed token lip service to tradition, then proceed to redefine tradition as to whatever he wanted it to be. In many respects, Steve Pederson is the prodigal son who ran through the family's assets (tradition, facilities, people) doing whatever he wanted until he finally ran out.
While it's over, it's not necessarily a great day for Nebraska. Pederson did a lot of damage to this program during his five year reign, and the best thing that can be said is that it's finally over.

wow
man, allow yourself to feel good once in a while, will you?
I have to believe that the heightened mood in the athletic department will actually help the football team.
