Corn Flakes: Safe Travels

Safe travels if you are headed over the hills and through the woods to Grandma's house for Turkey Day. Safer travels if you are headed to Colorado. Don't let them throw things at you.

Wearing Blackshirt: Nebraska 'D' will beat Texas - CFB News - FOX Sports on MSN

Well, call me Phil Ivey. Because after Saturday night's Big 12 North-clinching win over Kansas State, I'm all in. Yep, I'm putting it down in bold-faced Internet ink right this very moment: Nebraska will beat Texas in Dec. 5's Big 12 Championship Game. I've been dipping my toes in this pool for some time now. And though even the most faithful 'Huskers fans have been e-mailing to tell me I'm crazy, I'm diving in head-first. With a win over Texas in Arlington in two weeks, Nebraska is going to shake this BCS thing up. Hell, they're our only hope at a little chaos in what has been an all too predictable 2009 college football season. Forget Lincoln, Neb., and its suburbs — if you're a fan of college football and all the excitement that goes with it, Nebraska's now America's Team.

So it's little surprise, really, when NU offensive coordinator Shawn Watson, asked for his vision of the future, said, simply: "It would be a team like we were last year." Shotgun spread. Zone running game. Controlled passing game. With some power formations mixed in near the goal line.

To be fair last year the offense preformed pretty well. But fans seem to prefer knee-jerk reactions.

What will happen: Colorado will make this fun with an interesting group of trick plays with everything emptied out on the field. The Nebraska D will be up to the task. CFN Prediction: Nebraska 17 … Colorado 13 ... Line: Nebraska -8

His elbow will require surgery, so he won't be back. He's already redshirted, so unless he can petition the NCAA for a 6th year, he'll lose a year. Tough break.

Michigan State Football Players Reportedly Involved In Campus Brawl

Apparently some Spartan football players just decided to head over to the dorms and assault some people. This could be one of the dumbest on-campus incidents involving football players I've ever heard of. It'll be interesting to see what comes out of it. - JJ

ABC San Antonio Would Rather Show Oprah Than Let You Watch Colorado - Nebraska

[UPDATED - November 25th, 10:15 AM - KSAT has reversed it's decision and will be showing the Nebraska - Colorado game on their primary channel. This is in response, no doubt, to Husker fans contacting the station!

I take back all the nasty things I said about San Antonio. Hey, that River Walk is pretty cool! ]

Got a tip from someone who's let me know that the ABC station in San Antonio, Texas will not be showing the Colorado - Nebraska game but instead will be showing paid programming and an Oprah rerun:

KSAT in San Antonio is showing the Illinois v Cincinnati game at 11 am, then instead of sticking with network programing they are showing infomercials/paid programing until 4pm, followed by an Oprah rerun.

The Nebraska/Colorado game is being moved to secondary digital channel so viewers that subscribe to DirecTV or Dish Network won't be able to see the game at all. Cable customers with basic cable won't be able to get it. If customers have the digital package or have a digital TV antenna they'll receive the game on the secondary digital channel.

Stood up for..... an Oprah rerun and Vince's nuts?

Wow. What happened in San Antonio that Husker and/or Buffalo fans deserve to be treated so poorly? Is it unrequited love? Jealousy? Envy? Brain lock that's transpired several days?

There's still time to change your mind, guys and not head over the abyss. Once you do this, many of your viewers will NEVER TRUST YOU AGAIN. Don't let that happen, do the right thing and show the game.

Five Possible Replacement Coaches for Dan Hawkins At Colorado

I thought I'd help out Colorado should they decide to replace Dan Hawkins after this coming weekend. Plus, it's never a bad idea to be prepared with a list of potential head coaches should something happen to the existing one (such as having a mental breakdown after yet another losing season).

Here's a nice list of potential replacements!

Toaster

Redtoaster_medium

Pros:
Inexpensive, Easily replaced with another just like it.
Diversity - can create any color of toast you desire from white to pitch black.
Buttons and levers confound opposing defensive coordinators
Easy-slide bottom tray for crumb removal.
English muffins with tons of butter!

Cons:
Will never go for it on fourth down, regardless of situation.
Tendency to burn things when you're not looking.

Enjoying the Demise Of Colorado Head Coach Dan Hawkins

Wondering what the hell happened in Boulder? So is the Hawk.

Wondering what the hell happened in Boulder? So is the Hawk.

Before the 2009 season started, there were a lot of people who thought that Colorado would be a dark horse in the Big 12 North. Husker Mike had them pegged, as did Bill C at Rock M Nation. Me? I was one that thought they'd have a decent season. You're probably wondering what I was thinking. I don't blame you.

Entering the season, there were two things that stood out that gave me hope that Colorado wouldn't fall apart this season (more on that comment in a bit) - the exorbitant number of injuries the Buffaloes suffered last season and my faith in Colorado coach Dan Hawkins.

Hawkins entered the 2009 season with a 13-24 record over his first three years. It's turned into 16-32 as we head into the game this week, an abysmal failure particularly when compared to the 53-11 record and four WAC championships he racked up during the five years he was at Boise State. If he'd have been half the coach he was at Boise State, he'd still be kicking some butt, and that's where I went wrong. I figured that there was no way that Colorado would finish another season below .500. Yet here they are, guaranteed a losing season for the second consecutive year.

Corn Flakes: How Would You Play CU?

So Bo says that they are going to play to win against CU. I'm sure they will but how would you play CU? I win helps in the standings, and it's always nice, but you could rest Helu, and maybe work on some other things on offense. Do you play this like any other game, or do you keep an eye on Texas?

Omaha.com - The Omaha World-Herald: Big Red Today - Title game is far from Bo's radar

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini was sure Monday to let everybody know his full focus is on Colorado, saying "I don't want anybody to talk about the Big 12 title game around me.''

Lunch with Bo: Colorado is Nebraska's rival

"I know this is a special game to our fans and to Colorado fans," Pelini said Monday during his weekly news conference. "The two states are close together and this game is important to our fans in western Nebraska, and they want bragging rights. They make a lot of sacrifices driving a long way to see us play, and we’ve got to have their back this week."

Well there you go.

NE StatePaper.com - Pressed for Time

A look at how the coaches are handling the short week.

Life in the Red's Blog | Monday practice report

As for his vision of this offense in the future, Watson said: "It would be a team like we were last year. But we're going to have to grow into that at quarterback, to be honest with you. We're going to have to grow into that at receiver. That's going to take a process. That's going to take some time."

Possible head coaches and ADs - The Ralphie Report

Turner Gill or Frank Solich as possible replacements???? What?????????? - JJ

Buffs' Miller set to tangle with Husker named Suh

The guy is a complete football player," Miller said. "He's a big, strong guy that uses his hands extremely well. If you use good technique against him, he's still a heck of an athlete and will give you a challenge. But if you don't have good technique, you're going to have a long, long day."

Dan Hawkins Wouldn't Recruit Son if Given Another Chance

Hawk says that if he had to do it all over it again, he wouldn't have recruited his son Cody. Can't say I blame him. - JJ

"Not for him, no. Nope. Not at all," Hawkins said. "It's not fair to him. Here is a guy who is trying to do his best to win games and to help his team and does everything right, he's a good student and he's getting killed on Facebook and getting killed on his cell phone. "The great thing about this job is you meet some unbelievable people. But then you also see another side of humanity that's not real fun."

Revisiting the 2009 Colorado Buffaloes

The folks over at RalphieReport.com took offense last spring when I described Colorado's new offensive scheme as "Square Peg Meets Round Hole."  I suggested that Colorado didn't have the running backs or the quarterbacks to run a pro-style offense, and that the "Hawk Watch would be on".

Score one for the guy who "didn't know what the hell he was talking about."

In any event, we all know how Colorado's new offense turned out.  Failure.  I suggested that Colorado's new offense wouldn't work if the Buffs expected to throw the ball "35 to 40" times a game.  Through 11 games:  39 pass attempts a game.  Last in the Big XII in passing efficiency.

Colorado's offense did improve a little bit by burning the redshirt of Tyler Hansen, who helped lead the Buffs to upsets of Kansas and Texas A&M.  Colorado's struggles haven't been helped by a defense that ranks in the bottom half of the Big XII in nearly every defensive category.

RalphieReport has an interesting comparison between Hansen and Cody Hawkins, and while Hansen does rate higher statisticially, you have to be surprised by the 31 sacks Hansen has taken since taking over at midseason. Statistically, this looks like a Thanksgiving day feast for Ndamukong Suh and company.

The "X" factor in this game is the emotion that might accompany a potential final game for Dan Hawkins.  Will the Buffs rally around  Hawkins like the 2003 Huskers did for Frank Solich?  Or will the Buffs fold like the 2005 Buffs?

Here's the rest of our preseason preview:

Corn Blight Has Left The Building.....

As you may or may not have noticed, the name "corn blight" no longer graces this site. Instead, he, it, "corn blight" has been replaced by my real name, Jon Johnston. I thought about doing this a while back but have kept putting it off until now. I owe you an explanation for the change, so here goes.....
