Nebraska Baseball: The Strengthening Big Ten

Coming into the year about three teams seemed to be in the mix for the Big Ten baseball crown, Nebraska, Maryland, and Indiana. However, this may very well be the Big Ten's year to show the country what they are made of with four teams being ranked per d1baseball.com . Illinois has been consistent in the few years Nebraska has been in the league, but this year they are an astounding 30-6-1. Currently sitting at 11th in the nation, the Illini are a threat for not only the Big Ten title but for a nation seed. Then there is the Hawkeyes, ranked 19th this week after taking two of three at Maryland where Nebraska got swept. Iowa is performing at a level no one expected as they are currently tied for first with Ilinois. But the depth in the Big Ten does not stop there with Marlyand ranked 22nd adn Nebraska at 23rd. Maryland, the preseason favorites to win the conference have not under performed to any extent. Just the entire Big Ten as a whole has over performed making their 25-10 (8-4 Big Ten) record seem lack luster. The Terapins did stop Nebraska's Hype train completely in its tracks when they took all three of a home game series against the sker's. Now to Nebraska. Currently at fith in the conference at 5-4 and 28-11 overall, they sport the second best season long record in the Big Ten. Arguably with the best pitching squad in hte conference, the Huskers control their own destiny in regards on how this season will finish. Just a few weeks ago, they were seen as a probable nation seed when they swept Texas and dominated there home stand. Lately though, Nebraska has been playing recklessly, barely pulling out two wins against Crieghton and UNO respectively. The question is, what Nebraska team will finish this season?

No one expected the Big Ten to have four teams ranked by this time of year. No one could even fathom Iowa being first in the conference and 19th in the nation. How will this final month of baseball play out? Once again, no one can be sure.
