Your Big Ten baseball series this weekend:
Michigan State at Illinois
This is the most interesting match up this weekend. Second-place Illinois (tied with Nebraska) against fourth-place Michigan State.
Game 1 Pitching Matchup
ILL: Drasen Johnson (RHP, r-Jr., 4-5, 3.06 ERA)
MSU: Mick VanVossen (RHP, Jr., 6-2, 2.72 ERA)
Game 2 Pitching Matchup
ILL: John Kravetz (RHP, Jr., 5-1, 2.75 ERA)
MSU: Justin Alleman (RHP, So., 5-1, 2.53 ERA)
Game 3 Pitching Matchup
MSU: Cam Vieaux (LHP, r-Fr., 6-3, 2.06 ERA)
The pitching match ups are fairly even, but I'll take Illinois' offense over Michigan, especially since they're at home.
Iowa at Ohio State
Bad news at Ohio State this week as freshman Zach Farmer was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Obviously his treatment takes priority over baseball. Please keep him in your prayers.
Iowa is at 7-8 in conference, Ohio State at 6-9. After this, Iowa will have series against Illinois and Purdue, while the Buckeyes will play Michigan and Northwestern. Neither team wants to lose this series.
Ohio State has the edge in pitching, Iowa has the edge in offense. I can't imagine the Buckeyes losing this series at home.
Michigan at Northwestern
This is a chance for Michigan to solidify themselves at getting into the Big Ten tourney. This is the Wolverines' last road trip of the season - after this series they will play one more series against Ohio State, so they really want to take advantage of this weekend.
U-M LHP Evan Hill (2-5, 4.12 ERA)
NU RHP Nick Friar (2-0, 4.82 ERA)
U-M LHP Trent Szkutnik (0-5, 3.59 ERA)
NU RHP Brandon Magallones (2-6, 4.94 ERA)
U-M LHP Logan McAnallen (3-3, 3.12 ERA)
NU LHP Reed Mason (1-3, 4.31 ERA)
Penn State at Nebraska
The last time a Big Ten bottom feeder came to Lincoln, Northwestern walked away with a series win. If that happens again this weekend (heaven forbid), you can probably toss Nebraska out of the NCAA tourney unless they win the Big Ten tourney.
Bottom line: the Huskers need to show a sense of urgency this weekend.
Christian DeLeon will be out this weekend due to soreness. Chance Sinclair will start Friday, Aaron Bummer Saturday, and Kyle Kubat on Sunday. It's a chance for Kubat to show whether or not he's ready for weekend form.
NU and PSU Meet for First Ever Big Ten Series - Huskers.com - Nebraska Athletics Official Web Site
After playing its last four games on the road, the Nebraska baseball team (29-17, 10-5 Big Ten) returns to Hawks Field on Friday for a three-game series against the Penn State Nittany Lions (17-23, 5-9 Big Ten).
Minnesota at Florida State
Minnesota will head to Florida State in a non-conference battle against a top ten team that should raise their RPI no matter the outcome. One has to wonder why Florida State couldn't come to Minnesota this time of year.
The Gophers have struggled on offense, but this series will be a good test for their pitchers to see how well they can fair against a powerhouse ACC team. The Gophers last played the Seminoles in 2006, losing all three games.
Maybe the Gophers could steal some crab legs while they're down there, see how that goes for them.
Purdue at Indiana
Purdue on the road at Indiana. Egad. This is the first meeting between these two teams since the championship game in 2012 (oh how Purdue has fallen), as they haven't played the last two regular seasons.
Purdue pitching is really struggling, the offense is struggling - one has to wonder how many runs the Hoosiers will score.
Indiana is ranked as high as 11th in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
