Nebraska Walks Off A Winner vs. Creighton... But We Couldn't See It. Thanks Big Ten Network.

.. if only the investment in the Boys of Summer were half of March Madness.

The Big Ten Network announced their Baseball coverage schedule for the '14 season about the time Nebraska defeated the BlueJays at Hawks Field. Is there a good reason they couldn't show the game?

On Wednesday afternoon, there was a big e-mail sent out about the Big Ten Network's Softball and Baseball coverage for this upcoming season. In the communication, this statement was put out there...

BTN will offer its most extensive baseball and softball coverage ever, with over 240 events airing on BTN, BTN2Go and the Big Ten Digital Network (BTDN) for the 2014 season

Now, when you combine both the televsion and the digital networks, that does end up being a lot of coverage. But, to be honest, when you're already late for dinner, can you really talk about how good it's going to be?

On Wednesday, the Huskers came back from being down a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat the Creighton Bluejays 5-4 in front of 2,432 fans at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Nebraska (12-7) started the rally in the 10th with Ryan Boldt's infield single, then stole second base. Austen Christensen duck snorted a hit to left, plating Boldt. Jake Placzek took a 1-2 pitch into Centerfield to score Christensen and give the home team the victory. Austin Darby, Steven Reveles, Taylor Fish and Ben Miller joined Christensen with two hits on the day as Nebraska got 12 in the entire game.

.... but you didn't see that. What would you have seen if you tuned into NET or BTN? Well....

Now, granted, I get that this contest was pushed back into Wednesday due to inclimate weather. In the long run, who knows if either station sticks to televising the game, although I have to think that since it's a local production, NET would have been available and had that chance.

As you look at the schedule below you and then you take a look at the B1G Tournament that will be at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, do the quick matching up of listed telecasts and the first day of the Tournament. For those that are lazy, I'll let you in on the dirty little secret that BTN is not even interested in televising the whole tournament.

There are four games listed in the first 2 days of the tournament, as you can see here. The Big Ten Network is planning on showing exactly HALF of those games. There are up to four games possible on Saturday, and BTN has those listed as possibly being contested. However, there is a very good possibility that a few teams will not even be seen if they go 2 and BBQ, considering that there are no listed showings of the loser bracket games on Thursday. If you're seed 2-6 and you lose 2 games and done, you won't see any airtime. Now, lets say that the 2 seed is Nebraska. That's not going to sit well with a lot of folks who can't get tickets to Omaha and get to the games. It's not fair to any team, honestly.

Basketball season is over for the network, and after Saturday evening there will be no more Hockey to cover. The Big Ten, remember, is the same league that may break off and do their own Summer league at some point for their own trophy. That is an idea that Nebraska HC Darin Erstad has stated he's not a real fan of.

Now, BTN is getting better at getting their product out there, but it is nowhere near where the Conference ownership should be demanding if teams like Indiana, Ohio St, hell even Iowa with their 12-5 record as of Tuesday, want to play in regionals after Memorial Day weekend.

The season is a month old, and nothing has been done by the Big Ten Network about a baseball broadcast yet. Granted, the Big Ten Tournament was a big deal, but on Saturday and early Sunday, when the B1G was on CBS, there wasn't a chance to put something on? Heck, the first B1G weekend commences this weekend when the Huskers head to Iowa City. That's a pretty big weekend against first year coach Rick Heller's squad. There's only two ways to watch the games. Either make the drive and attend Banks Field yourself, or pony up to get Hawkeye All Access.
