The Weather is Always Fair in Nebraska

We’re hearing it all these days. Nebraska suffers a horrible second half loss; Head coach for the Huskers drops the F bomb in a 2 year old audio leak; Myth that Nebraska fans are the greatest fans in college football. All these countless articles are criticizing Husker fans and what they stand for; criticizing Bo for saying curse words towards others 2 years ago. Who qualifies you to question the integrity of our support for our team? Who qualifies you to scrutinize our coach for expressing himself? Have you never felt discouraged by your sporting team? Have you never vented and said things you regret yourself? I guarantee that every person has felt let down by their sporting team at least once in their life; that every person has said something that was not intended for others to hear. The fact that Nebraska’s problems are now out for the world to see is suddenly making us unworthy fans?

I am normally not one to voice my opinion in controversial times, but when others are questioning the value of my fellow fans and our support for our team I cannot sit back and just listen. Sure, there were people that left the game at half time and did not return to the Ohio State game two years ago. But that is a selected few PEOPLE, not the whole stadium. FANS stand by their team through thick and thin; a selected few people’s decision does not speak for the rest of Husker Nation. And if we were “fair-weathered fans” why have we stuck with our team for all these years? Why have we sold out our stadium every game since 1962? I have been born and raised a Husker fan. Have seasons been hard? Yeah, every team has a rough season now and then. We have high expectations for our Huskers, because we know how great they are. A fan getting discouraged because of a tough game does not say that they are losing faith and not standing behind their team. And for the rant of our coach; Bo had every right to feel discouraged in the people that left that day, as he has high expectations for his fellow Huskers. He had a right to vent. And he said the F bomb; what coach hasn’t?! They are just lucky enough to have not been caught on tape. The fact that someone decided to bring it up 2 years later is a cowardly move that will not form the opinion that we have for our coach!

So what do I do as a Husker fan in this controversial time? I stand by them and stand UP for them! Someone sitting in the stands doesn’t qualify them as a Husker fan. A Husker fan is someone cheering for their team whether in Memorial Stadium or from 1,000 miles away; someone cheering for their team win or lose. Being a Husker fan is a way of life; Husker Nation is our community. At the end of the day we love our Huskers more than anything. And to me, we are the greatest fans in college football. To all the doubters, I will just take a line from Bo – sometimes you have to say “F ‘em”.
