Stat Update After Illinois Game & The Rest of The B1G

David McGee

The Illinois win did provide a bump for us. We are now #32 (F+), #41 (S&P), Offense is still #10 overall & Defense climbed to #97. Offensively, we are #6 on success rate, up to #23 in rushing, #28 in passing and doing superb in passing downs at #19.

Defensively we saw our biggest jump though we are still #115 in success rate, #112 in run defense and 102 in pass defense, we jumped all the way to #30 in pass defense when in pass situations. Basically, if we can shore up 1st & 2nd down and put them behind the sticks, we are a solid team against the pass. It's that whole 1st & 2nd down thing that is hurting us.

Season End Look Right Now

We are 4-1, with wins in what should be Purdue and Minnesota to put us bowl eligible at 6-1. NW then provides a stiff challenge but a narrow win at 7-1. A loss against at Michigan drops us to 7-2 with toss up games against Michigan State and Iowa and a win at Penn State. Looking right now anywhere from 8-4 to 10-2 regular season or so the stats say! Of course, they are wrong often too!

This Week in the B1G

Indiana at Michigan State (-9) - Classic offense versus defense. Indiana is a really effective in passing situations when forced to pass but beating Penn State is one thing, beating Michigan State on the road will be another. Has MSU fixed their offense? Hard to say though Iowa has been solid on defense but MSU's best part of their offense is running the ball, something Indiana has struggled to stop. If Indiana can force them to throw and limit turnovers, they'll have a shot. Nebraska could use a MSU loss but I don't see it happening though it could be closer than expected. Game opened at 6 points and has moved to 9 points.

Nebraska (-14) at Purdue - You've seen enough predictions. Line has only moved from 14.5 so far.

Northwestern at Wisconsin (10.5) - Game opened at 9.5. Seems like a big number after NW had OSU right where they wanted them and let it slip away. It is now easy to ask if they can actually ever close out games. It has to be in their head at this point. Problem for NW is Wisconsin excels running the ball where is just average stopping the run. Further, NW has struggled moving the ball when put in obvious passing situations at times and Wisconsin excels in that area as well. NW is a serious contender for the Legends division crown so a loss here, which seems to be where everything points, will only help the Huskers.

Michigan (-1.5) at Penn State - This line is much closer than most likely thought as it opened up at 1 point. Michigan coming off a 2nd half drubbing of the coach-less Minnesota and Penn State fell apart against Indiana. Blowout for Michigan right? Well, maybe not. Penn State can stuff the run at times and Michigan, while it threw the ball effectively early, has trended the wrong way against stiffer competition. PSU's offense will been inconsistent but shown flashes. Heck, come to think of it, that fits both teams. Which team shows up will be the key in this game as no result would really be shocking.
