Husker Mike's Pre-Season and Game Preview
Last Week: Defeated Memphis Tigers 33 - 28
Nebraska returns home to Memorial Stadium after a humbling loss against UCLA and hosts the dangerous spread assault of Gus Malzahn (#7 in total offense). While Arkansas State lacks the playmaking talent of the SEC's Auburn, the performance of late of the Nebraska defense against spread offenses and mobile QBs has given much of our fan base pause and brought great concern. (It should be noted that despite the disappointment that our offense is, they only surrendered 36 points against the #3 offense in the nation. ) With some new faces on defense, it is possible that Nebraska may be on the way to solving their defensive problems.
One positive we can look forward to is that Arkansas State's defense is not particularly earth-shattering, surrendering 28 points to the #98 offense of Memphis. Oregon, the #8 offense in the country dropped 50+ points in the first half. Nebraska, at #16, should not struggle against this defense. Of course, we should be worried about Nebraska beating itself.
If Nebraska can lift itself above its own mental mistakes, they should come away from this game with a convincing win. (Tackling can't hurt.) While a win won't satisfy critics (Arkansas State is, after all, just a Sun Belt team), it'll at least hold off the fan discontent for a week. Another defensive breakdown and fan unrest may swell to uncomfortable levels.
This morning's theme song should put us all in a positive state of mind. We will tackle better today.
