A run-down of sporting stories from yesterday covering Nebraska athletics, the Big Ten and around the world.
Burkhead wants to bear-hug Coach Osborne, Wisconsin celebrates their non-conference schedule and the Mountain West decides not having a conference championship is preferable to letting WAC football disappear. Those stories and more below.
37 days to kickoff!
Football
2012 Football Media Guide and Record Book - Huskers.com - Nebraska Athletics Official Web Site
THIS CAN ONLY MEAN ONE THING: FOOTBALL IS NEAR.
Compton a ‘Journalist’; Media Guide Online - Huskers.com - Nebraska Athletics Official Web Site
"Our main objective is to get Tom Osborne to laugh on camera. If we can get him to have a good laugh, I guarantee it will be in my video. We may have to get a little crafty, but we’ll have fun with it." [-Will Compton]
And then Burkhead suggests he'll give a bear hug to Osborne. If that picture happens and is released into fair use, I might just post that picture every day.
22 yards: Early knockout in a red-out
And Notre Dame is still afraid to play us.
Delton Williams is an athlete who appears to be being recruited as a safety.

Manning Award Watchlist/ Allstate Sugar Bowl
Martinez is a top dual-threat quarterback who passed for 2,089 yard and 13 touchdowns while rushing for another 874 yards and nine scores. He closed the year strong with just one interception in his last 132 attempts. After setting the school marks for total offense as a freshman and a sophomore, the junior already ranks third all-time in that category for the Cornhuskers with 5,559 total yards. Nebraska opens the 2012 season on Sept. 1, hosting Southern Miss.
DUAL THREAT QB OMG HE'S TERRIBLE.
/national media
Pelini's taking a look at Penn State's roster. I'm guessing he won't be sending coaches to mill around their parking lot, however.

And good luck to all of them!
Football Non-conference Opponent Stories
After scaling new heights, Southern Miss takes quarterback auditions from the top - CBSSports.com
Another look at the unsettled QB position at Southern Miss. (Oh, and if you were interested, apparently Tyler Gabbert landed at UCF after quitting Missouri.)
Pac-12 Media Day: UCLA has yet to name its offense or its QB - latimes.com
Hey everyone! Remember the last time we cared about the name of an offense? Yeah, we pestered Shawn Watson about it a lot and then he called it the Nebraska offense and it was TERRIBLE. So let's call it the UCLA offense and be done with it.
Also, I am officially naming the Nebraska Offense the "Cat's Meow".
Volleyball

Baseball
Huskers Kelly, Scheffert in summer all-star game
Wait, they still play baseball in Wisconsin? Where? (Congrats to Josh Kelly and Pat Scheffert!)
Wrestling
Nebraska's Burroughs looking to become face of U.S. wrestling
Seems a little cocky but I guess if you earn the swagger, you earn the swagger.
Swimming and Diving
Husker notes: Rowan returns to NU swimming
Patrick Rowan is back with the Nebraska swimming and diving program.
Welcome back!
Big Ten
Penn State Roster Stakeout Getting Pretty Creepy - From Our Editors - SBNation.com
And the NCAA didn't see this coming?
Bill O'Brien gets a contract extension through 2020 - CBSSports.com
This makes it unlikely he'll jump since presumably that means he'll owe at least $16 million to Penn State. Who would pay that buyout?
Penn State Nittany Lions -- Silas Redd undecided as other players get openly recruited - ESPN
Because it's an ESPN source, I'm guessing Redd stays at Penn State. Oh, and O'Brien appears genuinely surprised by the sharks that are his colleagues.
Badgers announce 2013 schedule, shed light on process - UWBadgers.com - The Official Web Site of The Wisconsin Badgers Athletics
To allow for a game against BYU, the Badgers' annual game against Purdue will fall in week 4 of the season (the Big Ten traditionally does not begin until week 5). The BYU game will take place in November. Before we applaud the Badgers for scheduling BYU, let's take a look at their non-conference slate: Massachuetts (Yes, that one. The one starting FBS play this season), Tennessee Tech (FCS) and Arizona State (Probably will have a new coach because I hear Todd Graham has relatives in West Lafayette and it's always been his dream job).
Pre-Snap Read: A College Football Blog
Pre-Snap Read isn't sure what to do with Iowa either. Their description of Iowa's offensive situation doesn't sound promising though. Other than Vandenberg, they're severely depleted at all of their skill positions. Okay, depleted is a euphemism for their running back situation. And the belief that Greg Davis molds his offense to the personnel is laughable - I think his personnel molds itself to the offense as called and then improvises their way to victory or defeat.
College Football Countdown: No. 21 Wisconsin – College Gridiron 365 Blog – Orlando Sentinel
Another review of Wisconsin. They don't make any guesses but their review of O'Brien makes him sound like our kind of QB. As in, pocket passer.
Of course, he's a pocket passer with Wisconsin concrete chicanes, so while he's easier for us to take down, we have to get through a semi truck first. And by then he's probably handed off to Ball or White.
(Also fun to note, they haven't ranked Nebraska yet. SUCK IT WISCONSIN.)
Camp previews: Michigan : Husker Extra
Here's the LJS' review of Michigan. The picture of Robinson with Nebraska shoes is hilarious. And sad.
Olympics
Former Husker Aubry ready to lead Team Canada
Aubry will be the first former Husker women's basketball player to play in the Olympics.
That's a stunning piece of trivia. Good luck to her.
Team USA Flag Bearer Is Mariel Zagunis - SBNation.com
But don't worry, Bob Costas will tell you that Friday night if you watch. (Very miffed that the Opening Ceremonies are being tape-delayed with no live options in the US...NBC felt that a live stream wouldn't have "context".)

Washington gets commitment from 8th grade quarterback (seriously) - CBSSports

Mountain West Commish shuts door on Idaho, New Mexico State - CBSSports.com
So...NCAA CFB 2014 WILL allow for 2 team conferences, right? (And how much does this sting - the Mountain West decided that Idaho and New Mexico State would not add enough value to the conference despite allowing the conference to shop around their championship game. OUCH.)
So How Did Drew Brees Celebrate His $100 Million Saints Contract? - From Our Editors - SBNation.com
$100 million and the guy goes back to changing diapers. I guess he's won a Super Bowl so really what else is there to do?
