History of "NU"

Hello Nebraska fans, I was wondering why Nebraska calls itself "NU" when a logical abbreviation would be UN or UNL. Is there a reason you refer to yourself as "NU"? Also, Northwestern refers to itself as NU and I have noticed that the Big Ten Network will refer to Northwestern as NU and Nebraska as NEB for on screen abbreviations. Do you think it shortchanges your campus culture? I know multiple schools have the same abbreviations - OSU = Ohio State, Oregon State, and Oklahoma State, but those teams are in different conferences, so it isn't as confusing.
