Husker Grapplers Make History

3491646357_64451c0c14_z_medium

For the first time in school history and in front of a crowd of over 1,400 fans, the Nebraska Cornhuskers achieved a perfect 10-0 record to start their season. With their first B1G conference win, they are also one step away from tying the longest winning streak in school history, but the top ranked Iowa Hawkeyes are the team to beat as they visit Lincoln next Friday.

Senior Tucker Lane (HWT) was the first win of the night as he joined the 100 win club. He won by decision (5-1). An emotional win in more than one way, Lane dedicated it as a birthday gift to his father (full story here). After Lane's match, the Huskers fell behind 7-3, but came back to finish with a final match score of 18-16. One of those victories came from Jake Sueflohn (141), a freshman who beat his fifth ranked opponent tonight with a 10-2 major decision. Nebraska's young talent combined with their seasoned starters allowed this historic evening to occur(Huskers.com full story).

The Huskers now must prepare for top ranked Iowa next Friday... the 13th (Pretty epic to say the least). With such young talent, it will be interesting to see how the 'Skers match up against the wrestling dynasty at Iowa.

GBR!

Thanks, Adam,

for the report on this record-breaking match. What a win for the Huskers.

Now, what are our chances against Iowa Friday? Does the fact that it’s a home match help our chances of winning, or does location not play a big factor in wrestling?

Taking down #1 would be so sweet! Especially since it’s the Iowegians.

Well...

Iowa is pretty darn good. They always have been and always will be. Nebraska does have young talent, but I don’t know if it will be enough to overcome Iowa.
As for being at home, if the fans would pack the Coliseum to its capacity, then I’m sure it would make a large difference. In a more traditional “home field advantage” sort of way that someone would look at along the lines of football or even basketball, it does not make a large difference to my knowledge. What you really want to look for is individuals. Nebraska has a stacked senior heavyweight and a really good set of middleweights that are true freshman, so it could be very interesting. I’ll be researching the Hawkeyes and seeing what they really have for talent and post up maybe in the middle of the week. :)

Not the victory, but the action. Not the goal, but the game. In the deed, the glory.

Thanks for the response.

And since you and I are both fighting for recognition of Husker teams that are excelling, but not getting the fan love they deserve, please allow me to brag up the women’s basketball team.

They play Iowa Sunday at 3:00 p.m. on the Big Ten Network…LIVE…

Connie Yori has something special going on with this young team that sports a 13-1 record. The two big names on the team are Lindsey Moore and Jordan Hooper, but Yori is somehow (as she always does) getting the best out of the other players.

Iowa Sunday for the women…Iowa Friday for the wrestlers. Win-win, right?

The wrestling team

just made a HUGE jump in the polls this week, moving up seven spots to #7 in the NWCA/USA Today coaches poll.

Also, Nebraska now has seven wrestlers in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.

I saw that!

We have a pretty stacked team, with talent the likes of which we haven’t had in a couple of years. Everyone should at least check them out Friday. We should fill the Coliseum!
