Huskers Lose to Cocks - The "Fire Everybody" Post Game Thread

The 2011 season comes to an end on a bad note. It wasn't so much that Nebraska lost, it's in the way they did it - by cutting themselves with a razor blade and slowly bleeding themselves to death in the second half.

It wasn't so much that Nebraska lost to a top-ten South Carolina team from the best conference in college football - it's that they did it in horrifying fashion. A complete lack of consistency, maturity, and discipline.

Man, it's going to be a long offseason.

BTW, let's try to keep it civil. I am not in a good mood.

AJ the Hater brought up an interesting stat...

Ever since Steve Pederson fired Frank Solich after going 9-3, Nebraska has lost at least 4 games each season.

Why would you bring up Frank?

NU has not been the same since TO retired, or at least his recruits left the program.

Oh a ton of this falls on Bo

And I said as much earlier in the 2nd half thread. I shouldn’t have emphasized “fluky” (even though a few of those definitely were) but NU kept USC in it with dumb breakdowns in the first half and gave the game away with a total loss of concentration in the second.

Agreed

Gilmore had it right when he said the 3rd & 18 blitz was an emotional play call. That was the nail int the coffin.

This is my main gripe with the coaches – their emotion gets in the way of execution. Poor leadership.

Our first half miscues led to the floodgates opening in the 2nd

1. Abdullah fumble
2. Martinez pick
3. Inexplicably not covering the Hail Mary after USC called a TO
4. Blocked PAT

Our solid play in other areas was negated by all of that. This isn’t a one game thing. This is what Husker football has become. We should have led by 14 points at the half. Instead, we were down by 2.

Good game, guys.

I know you don’t want to hear from the opposition right now so I’ll keep it brief. Things I learned about the Huskers:

  • Burkhead is insanely good
  • Fans are super
  • Might maybe just might have had a few calls go against them today

It wasn’t a clean game for either team. A few more chips fell our way today is all—99 out of 100 times, Alshon doesn’t score on the Hail Mary, that PAT doesnt get blocked, etc. Good luck next year…I never really felt one way or the other about Nebraska before this game, but I’ll pull for you guys from here on out! For all the Bo faithful……. How many years / bowl games will it take till you are ready to move on with a new coach? This is as good as it it will ever get…. If you like 4 loss 5 loss seasons then yeah Bo is your guy.

I'll take 9 win seasons over Bill Callahan.

That being said, if the teams continue to be undisciplined at the end of the season, it’ll get tougher and tougher to accept.

My limit is ten seasons.

It's kind of hard to talk about firing someone who's never won fewer than 9 games

This year was a step back, but Nebraska is far better now than when Bo found it. The man just finished his 4th year coaching. He’s still pretty inexperienced. I’m prepared to give him a pretty long leash.

We are lucky to be 9-4

All four losses were fairly lopsided, save for Northwestern, but the Wildcats earned that victory fair and square. They were clearly the better team that day.

Now, look at the wins. We schooled MSU, but were really fortunate to catch them after their tOSU, Michigan, Wisconsin stretch. A fresher Spartan team would have been more dangerous. We barely beat an average PSU team despite all the distractions in Happy Valley. It took a comeback for the ages to beat Ohio State.

Here's the frustrating thing

We played Wisconsin even for 20 minutes. Northwestern was a derp fest, as was Michigan. This team had flashes of being REALLY good. But then they do crap that’s almost unbelievably bad. I still think we’re close, we just have to get out of our own way. That’s the next step Pelini has to make as the head coach.

by Salt Creek and Stadium on Jan 2, 2012 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

Hard to say since our team is bi-polar

However in a world that makes sense:

We should sweep the non-con schedule.

Minnesota and Penn State at home should be gimmies. Should be favored at Iowa with how vast the gap obviously was this year. We’re also favored in Lincoln against a seriously depleted Wisconsin. Ditto at jNW.

In Lincoln against Michigan and at Sparty are tossups I think.

Underdogs at OSU.

So thats what? 9-3 to 11-1 depending?

by jdhusker on Jan 2, 2012 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

Wisco won't be that depleted

They have a lot of depth. QB will be an issue, but they will just hand it off to 1 of 12 backs and still be dangerous behind that oline.

They just lost their OC, their o-line coach and I think they've lost coaches on the defensive side too...

Plus their QB situation is very shaky, and Ball and White are jumping to NFL.

Wisconsin will be quite depleted.

3rd string RB is a stud - Melvin Gordon (or something like that)

The offensive coach losses will be huge, but I don’t think that affects them a ton until year 2. They play very disciplined, smart football.

their lost their D-coordinator to NIU this year. Not sure of any other losses.

Annnnnnnd Peliniball strikes again.

Lack of fundamentals, penalties, lack of discipline, turnovers, one-dimensional offense, inability to adjust, overemotional, ineffective. Frustrating as fuck.

And he just promoted one of his BFFs to be DC. This when he had a chance to nab Mike Stoops. Things will not get better soon. 4-loss seasons as far as the eye can see.

I’m just glad this sad sack of a season is over.

Umm...

Obviously not Caputo. Barely over the limit and having to stop to sleep geez. But really he made a smart move, showed good character in realizing he had messed up and did his best to make things right. He also had a pretty good game today compared to the rest of the line. I’m surprised ESPN did not try to make his situation bigger than it was, I don’t even think they mentioned it once during the game.

by HuskerinTX on Jan 2, 2012 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

Well hey, we survived our first year in a new conference

And we got into a fine bowl game against a fine team. In fact, I think that we were actually better than them but we just couldn’t get out of our own way. It was a disappointing loss but not embarassing like last year.

I would like to see Pelini’s teams be more consistent and have the ability to overcome their mistakes. If we keep Pelini around and let him continue to mature as a head coach, I think we will see improvement there. Also, this team was pretty young for the most part, and that may have been another big reason they couldn’t handle themselves when it got rough in big games.

It does feel that way

But honestly we aren’t going backwards. We are just kind of stuck on the edge of greatness that a lot of teams are and with the right players and the right year, we could easily turn the corner.

This loss definitely puts more pressure on this year’s recruiting class. If it’s mediocre, it might be harder for people to believe that we will ever turn the corner. I think this year we just didn’t quite have enough talent and experience on the field to be a top 10 team. Last year we did, but they went with a freshman QB and that limited us. Hopefully Bo can convince talented prospects that they can be the difference in us making the jump from a 9-4 team to a 11-2 or 13-0 team.

Well

It’s upsetting when turnovers and mistakes blow open what should’ve been a close game, a la Wisconsin/Michigan.

Imo, this one is worse, because we walked out there and hit USC in the mouth and frankly dominated the first 35 minutes…..and came out of that stretch somehow down 16-13. This was not a game that we should’ve lost. This was not a game that should’ve been close. /repetition makes me feel better.

What gets me angry the most is missed tackles.

Bo came in with the hype of discipline and fundamentals. We are penalty ridden and cannot tackle until after the 3rd guy has missed the ball carrier. As soon as those get cleaned up, we can move on.

by HuskerinTX on Jan 2, 2012 7:52 PM CST up reply actions

Yep

Bo’s next step has GOT to be cleaning up the garbage we saw today and in all of our other losses/unnecessarily close wins. Do that and we’re 11-1/10-2.

by jdhusker on Jan 2, 2012 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I agree with this!

For such a strong defensive coach and disciplinarian, you would expect to see better tackling and much fewer penalties.

by Todd Wolverton on Jan 2, 2012 7:56 PM CST up reply actions

The other thing that has baffled me all yr

is how far our D line lines up away from the ball. Every game, every play we are 1 yd off the ball when every other team in football has their helmet in the neutral zone before the snap. Is that part of our scheme? If so it should stop until we get more explosive guys.

by HuskerinTX on Jan 2, 2012 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

Totally agree, we should have won!

The thing I hate the most is that last touchdown they got…it allowed ESPN to use the word “route” in the headlines when really it was a 10 point game that should have been a 7 point game except for that freak blocked PAT. Let’s not forget that Hail mary…and Maher missed a 39 yarder. Those are all things that almost NEVER happen!

There were just way too many “what-ifs” in this game, and a lot of them were very legitimate. This game was so much closer than the score indicated…but outside of this state no one will remember all that, they will just look at the score being 30-13 and say “SEC speed beat the Big 10 again.”

So about that SEC speed...

I think it’s so overblown. We had a lot of success with the option today, and Rex was outrunning SC’s “hyper-fast” defensive ends with easy. But of course at the end, when Taylor was forced to drop back and pass and it became a Martinez sackathon, ESPN announcers were making passionate word love to SEC speed.

Nebraska neutralized their speed in the first half by running inside-out with Burkhead, and

physical play by the DB’s. When the sack fest started in the second half, the speed showed up all over the field.

I hated Bob Griese as an announcer, he was a complete ass. But Brian Griese is announcing now, and I’m trying to figure out if I like him. It’s always unfair to hold the sins of the father to the son (or at least I hope so, because I have really nice kids thanks to Mrs CN)

ever tired

just regular ocean nasal spray? I know it’s only saline but it actually does work, and the blood vessels don’t respond the same way to it, so you don’t get the rebound congestion….

by ~OnlyJade~ on Jan 2, 2012 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmmmm...no

I’ll have to try that. While my immune system is generally very good, the common cold is the bane of my existence. I get it 4 or 5 times a year, it lasts 1-2 weeks with all of the usual symptoms and congestion so bad I have trouble inhaling enough Afrin to do any good. Needless to say the drug cocktail that I take to combat it is usually pretty extensive, so there’s nothing wrong with giving something else a try. :)
