Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

I don't normally allow political discussions here, but this one is an exception because it cuts to the core of whether or not sites like Corn Nation can survive regulation by a congress that does not understand anything other than what they're paid by lobbyists to understand.

SB Nation opposes SOPA. I personally oppose it. I hope you join us.

This piece of legislation is not clear with specifics. Although I understand the need for some change, after reviewing the particulars of the bill I can only think of the expression “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” and hope it gets pulled or does not pass.

The bill is aimed to stop internet piracy

But the rough equivalent of it would be trying to nuke the Indian Ocean to take care of the Somali Pirates. Sure, you probably get rid of MOST of the problem, but you screw over a few million innocent people in the process

Well, nobody really knows

I am in the middle of writing a research proposal on piracy right now. Basically, I agree with the Obama admin on this, the language is way too vague, esp. for our common law system which depends on previous judgements. I do find the “free speech” angle to be a bit too much, for it depends on a very extreme interpretation of a vague section on the document. Just write it better and the problem is adverted. I think what the US should do is similar to what Sweden did in 2009 with IPRED.

But piracy is a huge problem. Just go to google scholar and type “corruption, economics” and there is a ton of literature on how corruption kills economies.

Google's homepage celebrates too much shit.

are you referring to corruption

as it relates to piracy, or corruption as it relates to lobbyists? :)

Pirates are upstanding citizens in comparison.

At least they’re upfront about stealing things.

As a bleeding heart liberal

I just wanted to say bravo for SBNation and for Corn Nation for opposing SOPA.

Shouldn't be limited to liberals.

As you can garner from information available, it seems that our entire Congress seems entrenched in 20th century politics and perspectives, refusing to accept innovation or the concept of globalization.

Democrat, Republican, doesn’t matter. They’ve been caring more about their pocketbooks than actually helping lead this nation into this century and beyond.

Very true.

Today’s government isn’t about representation, it’s about how much money you have. When both Democrats and Republicans line up to have their pockets lined, we all lose as a nation. It’s pretty sad what our government has become.

It's our fault.

We can’t blame our representatives for being human if we let them get that way.

We re-elect these guys year in and year out.

I agree

When people don’t vote, everyone loses. I’ll never understand why people don’t vote. Having the same discussion with my friends and their argument is “I don’t like any canidates, I’m not going to vote”. What they don’t understand is by not voting, it just makes it worse. If there aren’t any mainstream canidates, vote third party. vote for an independent.

It's worse...The government has always been like that.

Read H.L. Mencken, Henry Adams, or the Federalist papers. I don’t think the government has “become” anything, if by that you mean it was better. Personally, I think it used to be even worse. It’s hard to believe, but today the oversight is more effective, partially as a result of the Internet and other technological innovations that our Washington overseers would like to squelch.

There has never been a time when politicians, taken as a group, were particularly virtuous or much better-behaved than today. (Although the Founders, who were wiser and better than most, took this into account and made use of it. It surely helped that they had to live with the results.)

In fact, the belief that there was once a time when politicians did NOT act like politicians is a constant throughout American history — it comes up whenever people want to decry the current state of things.

The good news is that the system is expressly designed to work even though scoundrels and thieves are in control.

If the Republicans nominated a rock to run against Obama

I’d vote for the rock. (I’m also very against SOPA).

I don’t really view this issue as “liberal” or “conservative.” It’s more about how much power of regulation do we really want to give our government over our access to information? That’s what I’d call the “conservative” concern. The more “liberal” concern is that we don’t need monied interests screwing around in our government more than they already are. Both are entirely legitimate. It’s hard to have much faith in our Congress these days, so in my mind: when in doubt, keep them out…of everything you possibly can.

To be fair

I’d vote for a rock over President Obama or any of the GOP candidates.

We should recruit scissors and paper as well.

I hear paper is really good at blanketing the field and scissors can cut through blocks.
