Nebraska vs Washington Postgame and Night Game Open Thread
Nebraska defeats Washington 51-38 and in the process, looks to have developed a somewhat consistent offense. The defense gave up 274 yards passing and another 100 yard rushing game to Chris Polk.
Ah so what!!!!! We won, and we'll sort everything else out tomorrow.
This is your nightly thread where we'll watch Oklahoma beat Florida State. You're welcome to join us!

Watching this game...
What are our chances against Wisconsin?
Have to improve defense a hell of a lot more
or we’re toast. We can score against them, but not as much as they can against us right now.

Yea, WOW,,,
cant believe the Blackshirts gave up 38!!
Rock out with your Stalk out!!!
Smoke em' if you got em'!!!
Low and Slow!!!
Not sure about the Defense....
Price showed just how young our secondary is. In the same breath, I give them a little bit of a break as Price showed that he is also a good passer on his way to becoming a great QB.
Finally, Green needs either new cleats or new feet. How many times has he stumbled on coverage?
This.
There are 21 other players on the goddamn field at the same time as him, yet he’s the only one slipping left and right, and thus giving up big plays.

Offense.....
Passing game kind of surprised me. Running game definitely improved and is starting to look good. And a big plus for some FB action.
6, pending the extra point.

Congrats on the win.
Your guys beat us up pretty good. Even more than the officials, and that’s saying something. Realistically, we needed a break or two to stay in this one, but they all went your way. I’m proud that my guys didn’t quit, though. Good luck to you, and maybe we’ll see you down the road.
thank you
We’re all hoping that you’re a darned good team and that our defense didn’t just suck, but yeah, you’re right, your guys didn’t quit, your quarterback shows a lot of promise and the refs screwed you over on some critical calls.
Good luck Huskies with the rest of your season!

Even I will admit some of the calls were questionable!
Price is gonna be really good. Glad we don’t have you scheduled for a while! :-)
Your O made our D look really bad at times. Not sure if it was all our young DB’s or a combination of things including our young DB’s but our D sure doesn’t deserve Blackshirts after this performance!

Remaining Optimistic
I think our D did OK (Grade C). We played 2 incredible QBs that had receivers who could make big plays. In the end it was the throw that did us in defensively in both of these games and the secondary is the area where we are hurting the most right now.
Agree Price is a good QB...
but he has two bad knees. We should have been better against him.
He only had one bad knee yesterday. Just saying.
Your guys did your share of the damage!

Was at the game
Very little voice left. Offense good. Offensive line VERY good. 4th quarter defense….WTF?

I think Pelini
said that he didn’t call a very good fourth quarter…. but like any good leader, I think he’s taking the heat for his troops.

He did say that. Then immediately followed it with we didn't tackle worth a damn.
My words. Not his.
The # of missed tackles were alarming.
That
And I’m not sure who to blame for the horrendous pass defense. The secondary looked lost at times, but the defensive line did a very poor job of making Price uncomfortable. On the bright side, the run defense was definitely improved (until the defense switched it off in the 4th).
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
we've become
too accustomed to having a front four that can pressure a quarterback by themselves, and that’ probably not realistic even with Jared Crick in there.
I’m guessing (and it’s just a guess) that the Pelini’s are not blitzing a whole lot because they want to see who’s going to play pass defense.

Also, someone give me an overview of the officiating
They’re bitching about it like no other at UW Dawg Pound. Most of the officiating misses I saw were post play cheapshots by UW players (I counted 3). Not to stir anything up, most of the folks over at UW Dawg Pound are nice but they have some absolute thugs on their team.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Two big missed calls as far as I recall
Both on kick receiving. One was where we let the ball drop and hit our foot and they recovered for a TD which was called catch interference on them (none of their players touched our player) and the other was a catch interference call that was just a bang bang clean play.
As bad as those two calls were
It is a guilty pleasure to have the refs call a game in our favor for a change
Ok
The play at the end of the first half is fair game for bitching. The other one was just a 15 yard penalty. In any case we’re talking about a 10 point swing on a bad call (maybe, there’s nothing that says we wouldn’t have scored on them even if the TD counted.
In any case, they got so completely owned in the 3rd quarter and only caught up when our defense relaxed. They can’t have their cake and eat it too. If the game is closer, our defense almost certainly doesn’t surrender three garbage time tds after the game was already decided.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
If they lost by 7 or 10 points then I can see these being hotly contested
Given the outcome of the game, we still would of pulled it out even if they got that TD and 15 yards.
you were in the stands, right?
I think some of that stuff is a normal part of football…. keep in mind that the officiating crew are watching everyone all of the time. Most of the time when they miss calls it’s probably because of a difference in how the conferences interpret the rules – i.e. kick catch interference in the B1G must be called more closely than others.
And having been in the stands at Nebraska – I know the fans tend to get bent out of shape if there’s any pushing or shoving after the whistle. And that stuff always happens.
If I’m missing something – do you have something specific?

The one that REALLY sticks out
Was the NU punt where we got flagged for holding. A UW guy had a blatant helmet to helmet late hit on one of our coverage guys. And we got flagged on the play. That really got the student section fired up.
There was another play where a UW lineman was twisting Martinez’s head in the pile.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
they really fucked washington over.
Took at least 1 valid TD away on the muffed punt return.

Like I said before...
If the game is closer, our offense doesn’t go into a shell, and our defense almost certainly doesn’t surrender 3 quick td’s in the 4th quarter. In football you can’t just hold up one play (unless its right at the end) and say THIS CHANGED EVERYTHING.
The people who blame the refs are ignoring that UW’s defense got completely dominated for most of the 2nd half.

This, exactly.
My rule of thumb is that if you didn’t come within a touchdown, you can’t complain that blown calls cost you the game. – unless you can point to multiple bad calls on which there was an actual point swing on the result.
When you lose by 13, and your last touchdown came when the opposing defense and offense had gone into shell/prevent mode, you don’t get to blame the game on the refs, even if one call was potential a 10-point swing.
When you get beat that bad, it’s your fault, not the refs. Pointing the finger at anyone else (like Chris Polk did after the game) is whining, and it’s unseemly.
by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 17, 2011 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions
Well, in a world where the word "momentum" doesn't exist, yes.
However, in reality, just as Jon mentioned above, it could have gone the other way just as easily.
By the way, that price kid is a real stud, I bet washington can make a run for the rosebowl this yeat with him.

"I felt like the game wasn’t decided on the other team’s play. It was decided on a few bad calls and some miscues."
Come on, man. The refs were bad, but you’ve got to take some responsibility for your team’s own play – especially in public.

Just getting online after getting back from Lincoln...
But got to see the Zooker nearly screw up the victory formation. Even in victory, Ron Zook is still Ron Zook.
Yes...
…almost as bad as the D in the first half.

I was actually kind of hoping OU would trash them. I thought FSU was getting way too much love so far this year for no particular reason. But they’ve put up a hell of a fight tonight, so credit to them.

Why can't Oklahoma just find a nice walk-on kicker?
We’ve done for what…the past like 2 decades? At least that long…I never remember us having a bad kicker in my lifetime, and if I recall most have been walk-ons.

South Carolina (10th)
Looked BAD at home against Navy today.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Well, everyone looks bad against the academies.
Wins only follow the talent on the team.
Hence why ND has lost to Navy the last few seasons.

Just saying
SC was ahead of us by like 3 points in the poll. And I think 13 point win over UW>3 point win over Navy.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Possible, I suppose.
But would the media or coaches promote a Big Ten school ahead of the SEC?

I think we're already #10 in the coaches
It’s just the AP where we’re #11.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
I have my doubts the media will drop SC below Nebraska then. We'll move up if FSU drops out of the Top 10.
I don’t think FSU should be penalized for playing top talent though.
If they drop out of the top 10, it’ll be BS. They need to lose to an ACC team before you can justify dropping them that far.

What is a Nole?
I watched the whole OU-FSU game, and not once did ‘berger refer to the Florida State team as the Seminoles. Not once. I don’t know why this drives me nuts. I don’t have any love lost for FSU. I hate the stupid chant, and the stupid ‘chop. But please – - – refer to them as the Seminoles. That is the team’s name. ’berger’s faux familiarism isn’t cool or trendy. His dumb-a** ‘keye’, NU-hating sidekick did it too, just less often (and did you notice that ‘spn didn’t once show a highlight from the husker game?—virutally the only top 20 game they didn’t cover, the tools!) ‘Noles is meaningless and stupid. If you think I’m offbase, let’s take ’berger’s routine shortcuts to their logical and absurd conclusion. Take this quiz. What is a:
‘rish
’ner
’jan
’lo
’ger
’ger
’on
’rine
’eye
’back
’ger
’tor
’sker
’cat
’cat
’jan
’skie
’tang (no women sideline reporters for this game please)
’back
’boy
’neer
’tan
’clone
’eye
’sier
’pher
’boy
’ner
’vil
I’ve lost track at this point. Do ya want to watch a game between these ‘eams with ’berger announcing (oh, and he’s on first name basis with the star player too, which you’ll be reminded of the entire game)?
Go CORNHUSKERS (not ’huskers, and sure as heck not ’skers)

Kirk Herbstreit has been chased away from the Buckeyes due to his criticisms of Ohio State the last few seasons.
But your other argument is valid. And long.

What is a 'Sker?
way too close to Skert?
As for any team named ‘Cat . . .
I wouldn’t want my team short-cutted that way if you watched they way my cats roll over to get their tummies rubbed. And the way the biggest and fattest one hides when some else hisses.
All these shortcuts are brought to you by the same marketing ilk (that’s not a shortcut) that brought you legends (‘gends) and leaders (’ders) and the corn farmer trophy (sorry, I can’t seem to shortcut that one).
Despite my cranky, beer-ridden rant, I’m glad the Cornhuskers beat the ’skies.

BYU and Kansas are going to be best friends this week.
Utah outscores ’em 40-0 in the second half to own the Holy War 54-10.
