2011 College Football Coaches Ranking: Nebraska Starts 11th
The 2011 preseason coaches poll has been released today, and Nebraska will start the season ranked 11th, second in the Big Ten behind the tenth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, pretty much a sign that the coaches expect Wisconsin to win the B1G with Nebraska falling short in the title game.
Comments on the rest:
I've been putting together a preseason blogpoll, and I would rank Oklahoma ahead of Alabama at the top spot for the sole reason that Oklahoma's path to the BCS National Title game has been made so much easier by the elimination of the Big 12 title game.
In the Top Ten, the two teams I believe are overrated are Stanford (Andrew Luck is back... big deal, although... someone has to finish second in the Pac-12 don't they?) and Oklahoma State (Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon, but no Dana Holgersen).
And because coaches can't help themselves, they rank Notre Dame and Texas. Do they deserve it?
USC is still on probation and not eligible for ranking.
Full poll is after the jump.

This pretty much guarantees
a top 10 or even top 5 matchup on October 2. Oregon plays LSU the first week, so one of those two will likely drop below both the Badgers and the Huskers. Same deal with OU and FSU in week 3.
Eh,i'm good with it
Like the old days,we earn our ranking. It’s better to be ranked lower, and work your way up,then to be gifted a ranking only to be exposed as a big name school with mediocre ability (the eyes of the nation are on you,Texas and ND)
Bank it... GameDay in Madison on October 1...
…and ABC’s Saturday Night Football on a primetime national broadcast, barring some sort of upset in the week’s prior.
I am trying
like hell to get to that game…..

Yeah it'll be a good one
My one reservation about that game is that for all the improvements that have occurred since Bo got here, he still hasn’t won one of those BIG games (you know, one where the media is talking about it for the rest of the month?). I mean sure, we spanked Mizzou last year when they were in the Top 10, but they don’t count since they’re Mizzou.
Assuming both teams are 4-0 when they play, we could be talking about that one for a while if NU brings home a W.

Rod tried to get tickets to Wisconsin and Michigan, and
ended up with zilch (and he is a season ticket holder). I guess there are season ticket holders out there that contribute a lot more than he does. He said he was banking on the B1G championship game right down the road.
By the way, check out this poster link that I pulled off of the BRT blog page – thought it was pretty classy:
Nick Toon?
Somebody doesn’t know the Badgers real well. You’ve got to have Wilson, or at least either Ball or White, since there’s no game photos of Wilson in a Badger uniform. Putting Toon on there is like putting Brandon Kinnie on there for the Huskers.

Meh

lol @ Texas being ranked.
Grow some backbones, you pussy coaches. I sware, Texas will never know how you voted!
I Can't Wait
To see if last years crappy Texas performance was an anomaly or the start of something good (for everyone but Texas). Fingers crossed it represents Texas’ slide back into mediocrity.

A&M shouldn't be that high
Personally, I’d put Nebraska about 5 ranks lower (but still higher than A&M!)

I agree on Nebraska
For a team that has mightily struggled on offense for 2 years now, I am hard pressed to think Nebraska is a upper teen team. I would say around 20 is better.
Google's homepage celebrates too much shit.
But...
The defense is definitely championship level, and even with a mediocre offense Nebraska is a top 15- top 10 team. With a new offensive coordinator, and tons of speed and talent, there’s reason to be optimistic that Nebraska can at least live up to that #11 ranking…maybe more.
We certainly have the potential to be 11th or even better
I was just expressing my doubts about counting offensive chickens before they hatch.
Regarding A&M, I looked at them as a decent team last year but one that Nebraska should’ve had no problem defeating under normal circumstances. They’re getting rewarded for finishing strong but really in their final four games they narrowly beat Baylor, had the Nebraska game given to them by Beebe’s goons, barely beat a terrible Texas team then got waxed in the Cotton Bowl by LSU. Top 20? Yeah probably. Top 10? Noooo way….imho.

Florida State
I was shocked they were #5. I don’t know how they got that high up. I understand they are supposed to have a good team but they have not shown anything in the past few years.
They've recruited well
The talent is there. But the on the field product…well that’s been the problem.
I wonder
which top 10 team will not live up to pre-season expectations this year. Last year unfortunetaly it was us.
Don't forget about Texas!
They were a much bigger fail last season than we were…and they started ranked higher.
Preseason polls are always a crapshoot
I wish they would release the rankings the Monday after the first game weekend. Huskers are in a good position to move up.
No kidding
We’re looking at top 3 if we start 5-0.

Love
the optimism but don’t forget about reality. Nebraska hasn’t won a big game on the road for a long long time. Okie State last year was the best road win we have had in the Callahan/Pelini eras. And they were ranked around 17th or so. Go to Wisconsin and beat a top five team, that will be a tall order especially with ole happy feet taking the snaps. If they do go 5-0 then they deserve to be ranked high and I will be cheering loud. I say 45% chance we go 5-0. If the offense can put up just decent numbers, and not turn the ball over, then I say 65% chance. But, we haven’t had a good offense since Joe Ganz led the team. With the implementation of a new system I am not expecting much better than last year. I hope I am way off though.
New System
We could implement a new system every year. The mere fact that Watson isn’t here to mess everything up is a positive. Tim Beck brings creativity and the offense won’t have to perform great, it will just have to find a way to not be incompetent. Incompetence typically falls on the Coordinators inability to mold a gameplan to their players. We have enough depth to adjust between spread and power gameplans.
The Biggest Watson Problem
Was changing the offensive game plan DURING the game and not at half-time. I’m hoping the new offensive system incorporates this mind bending, earth shattering concept that changes can be made between possessions. This allow us to be free from the Watson induced roadrunner-coyote loop of zero progress.
We don't
know what Beck will bring to the Huskers yet it can’t get a whole lot worse than the end of last year. If he improves on ball security and getting T-Mart to stop taking 15 yard sacks during the most crucial moments in a game he will look like a genius.
And because coaches can’t help themselves, they rank Notre Dame and Texas. Do they deserve it?
Hmmm…what do all of the Not Rateds have in common?
Notre Dame, 8-5, 440, NR
Georgia, 6-7, 260, NR
Florida, 8-5, 240, NR
Texas, 5-7, 162, NR
Penn State, 7-6, 161, NR
I believe the lesson here is that if you didn’t finish the previous season rated, you aren’t starting this one that way, unless your school has one a’ them sexy, historical names…
Totally Agree
How can a team improve that much during the offseason? They should rename the ‘preseason poll’ to the ‘popularity poll’. Looks like they forgot about Miami (7-6) this year.
Actually, I can understand the difference.
The post-season poll takes into account how the team was playing at the end of the season. The pre-season polls are about how the team looks heading into the season, so I’m guessing they are taking into account some possible impact underclassmen (Turner? Green?) and growth in a young player heading into his second year (Martinez?).

Probably
true we have benefited from it in the past also and maybe some this year. I don’t think we should be ranked eleventh after the way we finished the season last year.
