Since Things Have Slowed A Bit As We Bask in the Adoration of our New Big 10 Buddies...

...HOW BOUT A TAYLOR MARTINEZ POLL?

If I go with the number being bandied about by assorted scribes that 90-95% of Husker Nation is thrilled about Nebraska's move to the B1G, then I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the percentage with concerns about the quartback position for 2011 is slightly higher. So in the spirit of those concerns...

Poll
Taylor Martinez' 2011 performance will be as follows:
T-Magic is back - and a freshman trial by fire pays off as entire game improves.
268 votes
T Magic is grounded - he's not fully healed or injuries become a recurring theme.
87 votes
The speed is back but so is the inconsistency with the passing game - he starts but improvement lacks.
167 votes
Your new starting QB - Brion Carnes! (either out of fall camp or very early on)
94 votes

He scored 22 touchdowns! As a freshman!

And played horrible/hurt/uninspired the 2nd half of the season, otherwise that number would be higher!

In all honesty, the way I look at it, the great majority of other “good” college QBs (bradford, tebow, pryor, as far as recent times go) didn’t start kicking ass right out of the gate. Most of them were unknowns outside of their local fanbase until they were juniors/seniors which is when they were finally good enough to start.

As far as the inconsistency goes, I think it’s only one of those things that need to be developed just like anything else. So I’m optimistic.

Um, all three of the QBs you mentioned

were starters by their sophomore years. Two of them, Bradford and Pryor were starters as freshmen and Tebow and Bradford, WON HEISMANS in their sophomore years. But yeah, other than that your comparison is spot on.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

Since I can't vote via mobile, I say #1.

All players improve after their first year of starting and while I’m not saying he’s going to be zipping the ball around like Andrew Luck, he will be better in every aspect of the game over last year. I especially hope he improves on his game management and leadership skills. He has the ability to be a great player, if he can understand the defense better and earn the respect of his comrades.

It is what it is and we are who we are.

Can not

Really decide which one to vote for because of the new offense. If I had to choose I would say number one. Three years in college, better coaching, hopefully same speed.

I'd be a happier camper

if we’d stop singling out individual players. The criticism heaped on Niles Paul and Martinez last year was ridiculous.

Call out the coaches, the team, even individual units, but, as that blonde-haired guy on the YouTube video pleaded, “leave Brittany alone.” These players have computers, ya know… and feelings.

That said, I’m glad to see the other comments so far have been generally supportive of TM.

They're 18 to 22...how perfect were you at that age?

I don't know...

The Big 12 Championship game was on some random channel today, and he did not look pretty. I realize he was seriously banged up, but it reminded me of why I’m nervous about next year. I just don’t know how good of a QB he will be.

Then again, I remember what he is capable of and that he was just a freshman, and because of thast he HAS to improve (right?).

I’m torn.

Oooh! Oooh! Word of the Day: Aporia

“aporia \uh-PAWR-ee-uh\, noun:
1. Difficulty determining the truth of an idea due to equally valid arguments for and against it.” (Dictionary.com 7/5/11)

You are exactly where I am at. When he is intact and has opportunities, look out! When the O line looks like a sieve and he is injured, we are in for a long, long game.

But my optimism is also tempered with how the crappiest Texas team we have seen in literally years was able to shut him totally down when he was plenty healthy.

Catch the ball much?

Imagine if anyone could catch a ball that day. His passing numbers would have been much better and probably would have opened up a lot more running lanes. Could have been a totally different game.

That's True

Forgot about that, but man, the dropped balls were killing us that day.

Leadership

I question the whole supposed “leadership” problem.

If your QB has excellent leadership skills, that’s great. But, in the end isn’t it the coaches’ jobs to provide the leadership? They should be able to make the team play well together regardless of whether the QB is shy or a jerk or whatever.

by Trey Hillman's Chin on Jul 5, 2011 12:32 PM CDT reply actions

I agree somewhat.

You don’t want a jerk as your QB, but in college I don’t think he has to be the undisputed leader of the team. I’d rather see him perfom well on the field and keep to himself off of it (as long as it doesn’t cause locker room problems) than be a terrific guy who can’t play.

Fake Pelini...

Both Tebow and Bradford won the Heisman as sophomores. Tebow was an important cog in the Gators National Title team as a freshman and Bradford set the all-time NCAA pass td record while leading the nation in passing efficiency. Just sayin.

by Sean Post on Jul 5, 2011 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

I dunno if I would put Tebow's QB sneaks....

and jump passes at short and goal as an “important cog”. That was pretty much Leaks team. But yes, your point in taken with Bradford.

Google's homepage celebrates too much shit.

by meatybob on Jul 5, 2011 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok, bad examples.

But you get what I’m saying. Most good starters at good programs don’t start when they’re freshmen or sophomores, they suck and sit behind someone for 2-3 years a lot of times.

by Fake Pelini on Jul 5, 2011 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I think his decision making will improve overall for

some of those sacks he took were pretty inexcusable. But he was a freshman, and I would hope he would improve in general. Actually, if he can just hold on to the ball, that would be a major improvement.

The problem is that if the huskers don’t fix many of the problems with the oline, regardless of how well Martinez plays, the offense will stall. And after 2 years of this, I dunno how much faith I have.

You know the NCAA has gone too far when...

a school penalizes itself for helping athletes learn more. :) From what I understand, they cant sell the books anyway for money, that much is kept track of. But do correct me if I’m wrong.

Martinez is an amazing athlete. look at the way he runs down the field and then take a look back to a guy that played at the same position about 11 years ago. both fast and both elusive, (ask MU). If this kid could have the same attitude as Crouch, one word would desribe the Huskers “UNSTOPPABLE”.
