Pierre Allen, Rickey Thenarse and the Seattle Seahawks
I write for Field Gulls, the SBN Seahawks site here, and was wondering what kind of information you could give me on DE Pierre Allen and DB Rickey Thenarse. Both players were recently signed as UDFAs to the Seahawks so I'm trying to inform myself on them.
I know (I think) the Huskers ran a 4-3 defense with Bo Pelini that has similar lineage to Pete Carroll's 4-3 through Monte Kiffin. Any insights you might be able to provide me about the roles they played in Pelini's system, their skillsets, and their abilities to possibly translate into the NFL in the Seahawks system would be invaluable. Thanks!

oh heck
I should have checked this earlier…..
Thenarse actually made most of his best plays on special teams. It’s not that he wasn’t a decent safety at times, it’s just that he’s going to have to work pretty hard to play that role in the NFL. He’s had a fair amount of injuries, and he missed his last game due to a DUI suspension, which was too bad, because a lot of Husker fans really like(d) him.
Allen…. I don’t know anything about depth at Seattle, but Allen stands a much better chance of making a team. OTOH, I’m not sure that Allen has quite the speed to be a 4-3 NFL defensive end. It’ll be a fight for him. He was decent enough at Nebraska, consistent, but that’s probably not good enough to make a NFL roster, although maybe he’s a good fit at Seattle.

Rickey Thenarse, bless his heart
Was a personal foul waiting to happen and was never able to grasp Pelini’s defense; I remember several times other players were helping him get lined up pre-snap.
I did not weep when he got passed on the depth chart.

Good luck on both
I think Allen will make a team, and with a coach like Carroll, it could be a great fit. He’s not a guy who can do things on his own yet, but he has a good motor (dumb cliche term). He definitely had a lot of QB hurries, but arguably that had more to do with the DTs in Pelini’s system than anything. Still, he works hard, has a nice frame and seemed to have a high IQ (like most of the Pelini defenders).
As for Thenarse, well, he’s athletic and hits as hard as anyone can hit. He plays @ 110% on every play and sometime does some really dumb things because of it. I think if he gets some tutelage from a NFL point-of-view he could be a good safety, but its hard to know. Jon is right in saying that he’ll have to work extremely hard to make it, but it all kind of depends on depth. Good luck to them both, though. I liked both of them while they were here.
You forgot to ask about Zac Lee :-)
I was really surprised Allen didn’t get drafted. He’s not a game-changer, but he’s pretty darn solid in most areas of the game. Dan Kadar at MTD felt he could become a solid rotation player down the line.
