2012 Nebraska Commits #4 & #5: It Be Raining 4 Stars All Up In This Hizzy
DE Greg McMullen: "I don't like quarterbacks."
OL Paul Thurston: "Team comes first."
And with that, Nebraska's two latest oral commitments verbalized two of Bo Pelini's strongest beliefs. They immediately become the most highly touted members of what is expected to be an unusually small 2012 recruiting class. In addition to both being Rivals 4-star prospects, McMullen currently ranks 88 in the Rivals100 and Thurston stands at 137 in the Rivals250.
McMullen is a 6'5" 255 DE from Hoban High in Akron, OH. He also held offers from Ohio St., Notre Dame, Michigan St, Purdue and Northwestern. The Huskers are also looking at teammate and DE bookend Latroy Lewis, but no offer has yet been made. Here's some highlights - nothing super-exciting, but these are only sophomore year, so I'm assuming bigger and faster at this point:
Thurston is a 6'5" 274 lb offensive lineman from Arvada West High in Arvada, CO and says he has been told that he will play guard at Nebraska. Here's extensive highlight action of Thurston from last year. Quite simply plays with lots of red ass and pushes his man backward until the whistle blows:
Note: As was noted a few weeks ago, commit #1 Michael Rose had reopened his recruitment. He has since resolidified his commitment to NU and stated that he is now done with the process. Unless he isn't.

McMullen
Seems to play tentatively in his highlights but, as you said, they’re sophomore clips. And any sophomore on a varsity squad is talented. Looks like he falls in love with the one arm punch, spin move a lot and it throws him out of position leading to some poor one arm tackles. However, it’s impressive to see a kid from Ohio hopping on board and I can’t wait to see what else happens recruit wise.

GUARD!!!
I played guard. I love guards.
I don’t think I’ve seen one at Nebraska for years that can pull worth a shit. Maybe it’s just zone blocking. Oh screw that, it’s not. It’s that we’ve been getting big slow guys for a long time.
OHHHHHHHHH how I long for the days of the great pulling guard!

Prototype Nebraska linemen
Things change, time changes and we have to change with them. One aspect of Nebraska in the 1990s is we wanted linemen who were not in high demand. Everyone wanted the 6-5 tall pass blocking tackle or guard who was not that fast. Nebraska took the 6.1 to 6.3 players who were very fast and worked well as pulling guards or highly mobile tackles. The 1995 line when it was first enrolled only ranked 26th in recruiting. They came in with 26% body fat, but left 4 years later with 13% body fat. They specifically worked on developing fast twitch muscles which was unique at Nebraska at the time. In the end the pipline dominated college lie no other offensive line in history. I am not against this new crop of linemen because I know defensive line have gotten bigger. The times they are a changin and we have to change with them. Trust the coaches.
