WHEN THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL IN BOLD TYPE FONT..
Jim Tressel has resigned as head coach at Ohio St. Luke Fickell will serve as interim head coach for the 2011 season and a search for a new head coach will commence following the season.
Or perhaps, it would be more appropriate to say that Tressel was "resigned" by the university, according to the Columbus Dispatch who first reported the story.
Naturally, we are most concerned with how this affects the Cornhuskers, right?
1) With the program now officially in disarray status - fired coach, interim coach, impending sanctions, player suspensions, who is the new coach - how does this affect their chances in next year's matchup in Lincoln?
2) Does Bo become a target again?
The name being thrown out the most this morning is Urban Meyer, but we've a year to wait. If NU lights it up in its first tour around the Big 10, does Pelini become an option to come home and fix the Bucks with a decent rebuild job already under his belt at Nebraska?

I take that back
I don’t think you’re going to see anyone go to OSU until they know what’s going to happen with whatever sanctions are handed down.

No German Beer for you!
Do you remember what I posted in your “Tressel” post a few weeks ago? That Tressel would resign or be gone before the end of the season, and I even put beer on the line. Nobody took me up on it. This whole charade reminds me of Clinton standing in front of the camera saying he didn’t inhale or that he didn’t have sex with that young woman. Ignorant and arrogant!
SI’s article names 9 additional players that were involved in the tattoo scheme who are currently on the starting team. Ohio St will be lucky to field a team when they come to Lincoln in October. The NCAA is going to come down hard on the University – Tressel’s resignation won’t impact that at all.
Unless Bo can bring his entire staff (or the staff he wants) I don’t think he will go. He had to deal with keeping some of the coaches from Callahan’s staff and now that he has “his” staff in place, I don’t think he would want to keep around leftovers from Tressel’s staff. Some of them have been there quite a long time.
In the deed, the glory.

Sigh....
Here we go again. Now we have a year of angst and speculation about Bo’s dream job and special releases in his contract, how if the team does really good it’ll make him a top prospect, blah blah blah.
I am not looking forward to another year of the sideshow drama that has drained some of the fun out of Husker football the last couple of years.

That's just what I was saying.
Unless Pelini makes a public statement that professes his unyielding commitment to Nebraska (not likely, or in his best interests) or Urban Meyer quickly says, “I’ll take the job,” get ready for this Ohio State speculation to cast a shadow over the entire upcoming season.
Pelini may very well not be Ohio State’s top target, or even a top-3 target. However, if Nebraska achieves anything notable this season, there will be analysts/commentators who will take the fun out of it with remarks such as: “hmm, you think Pelini is making a case for the Ohio State job with this?”
I don’t think anything happens until after the season. It’s to late to start bringing in a new system so their going to go with an interim all season. If he does well then maybe they just keep him. If not then I think Pelini moves to the top of their list.
No one is going to want the job until the NCAA sorts out everything.
On a side note if Pelini should leave and I don’t think he will but who knows, who becomes our next head coach. I think Carl Pelini would be a good choice.
Not so sure,,,,
if Bo goes,,Carl is sure to follow?!
Rock out with your Stalk out!!!
Smoke em' if you got em'!!!
Low and Slow!!!
I hope and pray that
Bo stays which I think he will. Whoever they bring in though won’t be Urban in my opinion. If only for the reason they would want a coach to clean up this mess. Because when its all said and done it could be very bad for osu. They may get some heavy sanctions by ncaa. So they next coach will need to run a very clean program. Meyer doesn’t have a great track record of players staying out of trouble.

It all depends on how hard the NCAA comes down on Ohio State...
Urban Meyer’s daughter Gigi already is posing the question via Twitter…
http://twitter.com/#!/GG_40/statuses/75194418642157568
It depends on how severe the NCAA’s sanctions go. Removing Tressel is the first step to mitigating that.
Arrgh...
I should know better than that… Here’s the linky again…
Wow… who’s ganna be the next person to wear the sweater vest???

Sports Illustrated is going to drop a bomb on Tressel and Ohio State tomorrow....
…according to “Along the Olentangy”….
http://www.alongtheolentangy.com/2011/5/30/2197188/jim-tressel-out-as-ohio-state-head-coach
It appears Tressel could no longer withstand the increasing pressure from the upcoming player suspensions served this fall by five football players, pending NCAA sanctions and a reported Sports Illustrated article set to unveil more allegations tomorrow.
A few additional thoughts..
1) Now ESPN seems to be on a steady diet of “Meyer -Pelini – Meyer – Pelini”. For God’s sake, Herbstreit, can you just go buy a new case of product & leave us alone.
2) Don’t like someone coming after your coach every year? Welcome to Stoops World & big-time college football.
3) Don’t be so sure that Carl’s in a rush to become a head guy. In 2003, he said he was perfectly happy to be Cardinal Mooney’s DC until Bo got him on as a grad asst.
4) Is TO now looking a little smarter for taking care of him with the last contract extension?

Just visited
the SBN Ohio State site, and it seems our wringing of hands over them stealing Bo is without grounds. They’re throwing around names of possible replacements for Tressel, and neither Bo’s nor Carl’s has been mentioned once. Apparently, they (OSU fans) don’t hold Bo in such high esteem as we do.
But a successful run through the BIG this fall might change that.
They're 18 to 22...how perfect were you at that age?
The Power of Red begins with the Passion of Walk-Ons.
It Would be a Big Leap for Ohio to go From Sweater Vests to Sweats
Bo is more desirable to us right now than to a top 5 program that theoretically could have their pick of anyone (well. almost anyone, depends on the sanctions to follow). Bo just doesn’t have the big time experience (yet), record (gotta win some divisional titles, not just barely lose them) or the demeanor (queue sideline meltdown videos) that a top 5 program would demand. Yet.

OF course Ohio St's last hire...
…came from the 1-AA ranks. Just saying they may be more inclined to do this hiring thing their own way and not pick from the flavor of month most wanted coaches list.
by Andy Ketterson on May 30, 2011 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions
He won FOUR national championships in 1-AA
… and as a life-long Big Ten fan I can pretty certainly tell you that ANYONE making a run through the B1G this year will be discounted in Columbus for doing it in the Buckeyes down year.
Add to that Bo’s growing reputation as a hot head and I don’t think you have to worry about them choosing Pelini.
This.
Nebraska fans are inclined to view Pelini much more highly than the rest of the world because of the Callahan-created hell he rescued the program from.
The rest of college football sees a little bit of defensive brilliance and a whole lot of anger.

Um, it ain't us, guys....
That’s ESPN and the other talking heads out there throwing his name around.
Many NU fans are of the opinion that he hasn’t gotten the job completely done here yet and seriously don’t get the why his name comes up nationally so often. In many cases, it seems like he’s much more respected nationally than locally at times.
by Andy Ketterson on May 31, 2011 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions
Sure, ESPN and the talking heads are bound to throw his name around
Simply because they have hours upon hours of airtime to fill. That doesn’t mean OSU will take him seriously as a candidate.
I think Bo is extremely respected nationally as a defensive mind. But certainly not as top-flight head-coaching material.

I Agree With Speilman
If he had just come forward, he would not have been where he is today. I think TO is a great judge of character and he supported The Vest. But, good people do stupid things and he made a big blunder. It will be real interesting to see what the NCAA does to OSU in light of their new “get tough” philosophy. Tressel will land on his feet somewhere. But, this will end up being a major issue for the Buckeyes. Sanctions could far exceed what USC got.

Bo & Urban Speak
Urban Meyer:
I am committed to ESPN and will not pursue any coaching opportunities this fall. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the people at ESPN this spring and remain very excited about my role with the network this fall.
Jim Tressel has been a respected friend and colleague for a long time. I wish Jim and his family the very best now and in the future.
Bo Pelini:
“Jim Tressel is an outstanding football coach and a good man. I’ve followed and respected his career since his days at Youngstown State, and through his tremendous success at Ohio State the past decade. He will be missed in college football.”

Good for Urban..
…since the search doesn’t begin until AFTER this fall.

Yeah, I Caught That, Too
Nice weasel wording. I notice thought that Bo didn’t even go that far….
by UltimaRatioRegum on May 30, 2011 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Unless
we win the National Title I don’t think we have much to worry about because OSU won’t be looking his way. Winning the BIG I don’t think will be enough to make them look his way. Which I think is pretty unlikely to do this year anyway. His hot temper won’t win him many fans in Columbus either after the Hayes incident. Bo has done some really good things in his time at NU, but nothing great. He hasn’t even been to a BCS game much less won one. Ohio State will want a bigger fish than Bo. All that being said I hope they don’t come after him because I think he is a really good fit at Nebraska.
Oh man
Hello fellow Husker fans! I have read these blogs for a while and finally decided to join in.
I think the NCAA is going to come down hard on the OSU program for all of this. I predict (and this is just speculation) that they will be hit with a 3 year bowl ban and severe scholarship limits for just as long. OSU football is facing serious sanctions from the NCAA and Pryor (given the new probe) may be facing an extended suspension for which he may just declare himself eligible for the NFL.
As for the coach replacement…Bo has always said that OSU is his DREAM job. If they come calling, he will be going. Plain and simple. The only thing that would make Bo hesitate is the NCAA sanctions that are yet to be placed. If this happens TO would push hard to keep Carl as our head and I believe he would accept.
Welcome!
Agreed – I think Bo likes it here, but he doesn’t have any deep ties to Nebraska to keep him around – certainly none like at OSU. If they call, he’s gone. I just seriously doubt he’ll get an offer.
