Last week, Athletic Director Trev Alberts shut down UNO's Football and Wrestling programs in order to save money and be in compliance with Title IX. In the process, UNO will join the Summit League in Division I sports.
Under Alberts' plan, UNO would begin the transition to Division I next fall without its football and wrestling teams, likely playing a mixed schedule of Division I and Division II teams, then begin competing in the Summit League in the fall of 2012 as a full member. UNO wouldn't be eligible to compete for NCAA bids until 2015.
It will still be a few years before UNO will be able to play in the NCAA tournament, but they will have that opportunity in their new conference. The Huskers will now have 2 in-state competitors in basketball; Creighton and UNO. Who will be the next team from Nebraska to make the NCAA tournament? Creighton? UNL? UNO? And speaking of Creighton, what will the affect be of UNO joining Division I be on them? Omaha will have two D-I basketball colleges. Will it affect their recuriting and/or popularity in Omaha?
