Potential Nebraska Staff Changes Steal Spotlight From Bo Pelini's Best Recruiting Class

What does Kevin Wilson have against Bo Pelini?

That's what you should be asking yourself right now. This afternoon, Pelini was all set to announce the best recruiting class that Nebraska has seen in quite a while when Nebraska media persons caught wind that Indiana Head Coach Kevin Wilson (formerly Oklahoma's offensive coordinator) had announced during his signing day press conference that Indiana defensive secondary coach Corey Raymond was leaving to take the same position at Nebraska

This lead to an awkward teleconference as Nebraska media members were chomping at the bit to ask him about staff changes. The conference starts off fine, with guys like Sean Callahan and Brian Christopherson asking questions about this year's recruiting class.

Star-divide

Then about 12:15, Curt McKeever comes in with a question trying to lead Pelini into saying something about his coordinators - what's he telling kids. The idea is clear - are Pelini's assistants and his offensive system staying the same?

At 14:00 - Dirk Chatelain of the Omaha World Herald comes in and asks about Wilson's statement. Pelini responds saying "No one's been hired here yet." Pelini also makes it clear he's not talking about staff changes, that any information on that will come at a later time.

Chatelain: "Is Marvin Sanders still on your staff?"

Pelini: "I've already said I'm not talking about anything but recruiting today. I'll address any staff questions at another time."

Chatelain: "Have you notified any recruits of staff changes..."

Pelini: "Have I notified any recruits? No, because we really haven't had any staff changes up to this point."

Then a few seconds of awkward silence and Max Olson of the Daily Nebraskan comes in to rescue Pelini.

I find this sequence of events pretty amazing. Not only did Nebraska get all of the players they were expected to get, but they picked up one of the best defensive tackle prospects in the nation when Todd Peat choose the Huskers over his home state Arizona State Sun Devils. The class ended up ranked 15th, second only to Ohio State in the Big Ten.

Granted, reporters have to do their jobs, but I'm torn between

WE MUST KNOW EVERYTHING THAT'S HAPPENING IN REAL-TIME DAMMIT, BECAUSE WE'RE FANS AND YOU OWE US BECAUSE WE BUILT THIS PROGRAM YOU'D BE NOTHING WITHOUT US WE PAY YOUR SALARY

and Bo Pelini having to respond to every rumor, every statement, every innuendo that's tossed his way.

A lot of Husker fans would love to see Shawn Watson leave the program... or worse.....

HANGIN's TOO GOOD FOR 'IM, BURNIN's TOO GOOD FOR 'IM, HE SHOULD BE TORN INTO ITSY BITSY PIECES AND BURIED ALIVE!!!!!!

But, holy cow, man - the one day in which Husker fans should be full of delight and glee about the players that are coming in - we got Todd Peat, for crying out loud - we head right back into chaos and disorder and beating Pelini over the head because he won't come clean or he's hiding something or there's things going on we don't know.

My God, Kevin Wilson must hate Pelini's guts. It's too bad that Nebraska doesn't play them for a couple of years, otherwise we'd score 400 points on them next season and smash them into the ground, unless, of course, Shawn Watson is still on staff at which point, we'd only score 10 points but still beat them into the ground after allowing -123 yards rushing and no yards passing.

It leaves me with one huge question - is the WHOLE offseason going to be this angst-filled?

The media/bloggers/armchairs are blowing Bo's response way out of proportion.

All of this reminds me of the collective temper tantrum when Bo closed access to fall camp after Sean Fisher’s injury. His first obligation is to his team and to his staff, NOT to the fans or to the media. You can all stand to wait a day or two more to find out. Deal with it.

Reporter: "What would it take to get you to spend three or four days outside, on concrete?"
Joe Paterno: "Depends what she looks like."

by Cornbadger on Feb 2, 2011 5:50 PM CST reply actions

Do you really only think it's going to be a day or two?

Before today, it had been a month since anyone from the media got to talk to Bo. For all they know, they may not get to talk to him again until spring practice starts.

by Cheeseandcorn on Feb 2, 2011 6:36 PM CST up reply actions

I think Bo throws larger temper tantrums than does the collective media.

If he treated them with some modicum of respect it would likely make his job easier as well. They wouldn’t have to ask so many questions (many of them sounding stupid) if Bo would simply expound upon his answer beyond his typical “yes/no/I’m not discussing that.” I think he honestly likes toying with them and playing this cat and mouse game.

by George W. Beadle on Feb 3, 2011 1:29 AM CST up reply actions

I do think Bo sets a bad precedent by being standoffish to the media.

It could be argued that his media lockout after Sean Fisher’s injury set the tone for an excessively high-tension season, Big 12 break-up notwithstanding. He could save himself some major headaches if he would just respect the expectations of a man in his position.

"...is the WHOLE offseason going to be this angst-filled? "

Good Lord I hope not. This last season was so stressful it was about as much fun as a charlie horse. But I fear Bo’s style lends itself all too well to generating the aforementioned angst. He doesn’t talk much and he dodges questions.

And lets face it, his brevity translates into not always being truthful:

  • saying Martinez was “fine” when he clearly wasn’t
  • that line of crap we were fed about the “tight quarterback competition” that clearly wasn’t
  • saying he’s not selecting a QB until gametime when subsequent player reports indicate the decision was made early in the week
  • offensively saying “it’s about execution” when a lot of what we see is clearly about coaching, such as not being able to coach a kid up to the point he can execute, or not deploying schemes the kids can use, or all that aside, recruiting the kids who can be coached up or ‘get’ the schemes.

I get that he doesn’t have to tell us everything and that some of his statements are strategically calculated not to divulge important information. But overall Bo’s taciturn responses and coach-speak prevarications just feed the fires of speculation like crazy.

by UltimaRatioRegum on Feb 2, 2011 6:08 PM CST reply actions

I'm also sick of the drama, Jon

But this was not a rumor or innuendo. Another head coach had said in a press conference that one of his coaches had been hired by Nebraska. That’s about as solid a lead as you can get. You can’t not ask that question if you’re a reporter, and for Bo to refuse to acknowledge it seems kind of absurd.

by Cheeseandcorn on Feb 2, 2011 6:39 PM CST reply actions

He did acknowledge it.

He answered the question as best he could given the circumstance. If NU hasn’t hired the man yet, then Bo can’t really say that they have. Kevin Wilson can say anything he wants if the guy has already left Indiana.

by jkstar09 on Feb 3, 2011 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

I think you're right that

Given the circumstances, there was nothing else it made sense to say. I couldn’t see him (or any coach) turning a signing-day press conference into a staff firings/hirings press conference.

In fact, I’m perfectly OK with his response IF he follows it up in the next few days with a legitimate announcement or statement clarifying the situation. But if he just tries to pretend that another head coach didn’t just say publicly that his assistant is going to coach for the Huskers and if he tries to act like this is a non-issue, then we’re getting into pretty ridiculous territory.

by Cheeseandcorn on Feb 3, 2011 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

Besides....

….Kevin Wilson didn’t say he was hired by Nebraska…he said he left to go coach at Nebraska. It’s subtle, but there’s a difference. I could walk into my boss’ office and tell him I’m leaving to go coach at Nebraska, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

I long for the days

of the newspaper when we would wonder anxiously about who was signed. There was a certain excitement to waiting. I love waiting! I didn’t find out what sex my kids were until they were born. I don’t mind waiting to open Christmas presents. There is nothing wrong with having to wait. Patience if a virtue! This need to know — must know — gotta’ have it world we live in sure makes it difficult for a lot of folks. Once again, Bo should be able to share information on his terms. He does not owe the media or the fans anything other than doing his job and putting the best team he can on the field every Saturday.

Rumor I heard...

I heard this from more than one buddy over the last 2 days, that Watson was out and Beck was going to be the new OC. Scott Frost will be hired as an assistant OC.
95% chance is bullshit but they are making moves behind the scenes so maybe?
Mostly I want this to be true but I thought I would see if anyone else has heard the same thing?

So I tried the Barbasol and Rotel dip and I was very dissapointed!

From Steve Sipple

At the Journal Star:

Three notable absences from the Husker recruiting dinner at the Holiday Inn Centre in Omaha, according to one dinner attendee:
Ted Gilmore, Shawn Watson and Marvin Sanders.
I think it’s becoming clear what to make of that.

OK, can anyone to me explain any possible reason why Sanders might be out? The only two I can think of are another job or some sort of disciplinary issue. Neither seems likely at this point.

Weird. Just weird.

by Cheeseandcorn on Feb 2, 2011 7:49 PM CST reply actions

reasons:

1 – he’s been fired for one reason or another. this is of course the worst possible option, so it’s the most likely one everyone will assume. :)

2 – he has a chance to do something else with his life. who the hell knows – maybe he’s decided to do something else. maybe he’s going to retire from coaching, assume another position, or go fishing more often.

3 – Stepping aside to give someone else a chance.

Oh, hell, I have no idea.

Corey Raymond

The new head coach at Indiana told the press that one of his assistants, Corey Raymond, is coming in to coach the secondary. Not sure why they’re letting Sanders go, he has produced so much secondary talent….

I have heard that Sanders resigned and that is why he is being replaced.

As far a Bo not being there, he doesnt want to answer questions.

So I tried the Barbasol and Rotel dip and I was very dissapointed!

by Amonra on Feb 2, 2011 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

If Corey Raymond is going to be the new DB coach, maybe Marvin Sanders is taking the LB job. At most jobs, management likes to move people around so that they get experience doing other jobs and thus make them more valuable to the company. Why can’t they do that here?

Relax and just let them work.

If so, I hope it is nothing that would bring sanctions against the program.

Not a good situation either way but that could quickly make things worse than just losing a coach, if true.

something to do with the actual recruiting or something of a more personal nature??

From what I’ve heard it was an incident involving Marvin on a recruiting trip, however he didn’t break NCAA rules just a poor decision. If it turns out to be true I’m sure we’ll hear more about it in the coming days unless they choose to keep it in house.

All this BS...

…is going to do is push Bo Pelini out the door the first real chance he gets. Let them work all this out in private and find out WHEN IT HAPPENS.

Seriously people, if he leaves in the next couple years citing an inability to deal with media pressure or a rabid, rumor mongering fan base…then where will we be? We are not entitled to know everything before it happens just because we are fans or even reporters. RECRUITS see this BS going on and they take notes….I’m surprised it didn’t affect this year’s class, or maybe it did.

I love cornnation.com….but web sites like this DO NOT HELP. Please REPORT the news, don’t make it up.

by jkstar09 on Feb 3, 2011 10:52 AM CST reply actions

Yes, because no other program's fans/media would speculate similarly.

You are kidding yourself if you don’t think this happens in the SEC and elsewhere, and I think the last 5 years have shown that coaches in the SEC can handle it and succeed.

For all of the riding that Bo does on his players and coaches he certainly would seem rather hypocritical if he couldn’t deal with speculation that he helps to create by giving non-answers. I know that in this instance his hands are tied since coaches haven’t been officially fired but it isn’t like this is the first time a similar situation has occurred. I like Bo and I like his fire, but if his leaving is mostly because he couldn’t handle speculation that occurs on the internet, I’m not really sure where he is going to find a more comfortable home.

Not to mention, Corn Nation was just reporting speculation that is firmly rooted in fact due to what Indiana’s coach said, to the press and on record, about one of his coaches leaving to coach at Nebraska

by George W. Beadle on Feb 3, 2011 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

Honestly, I'm getting sick of this argument

But I keep getting sucked back in, because apparently I’m the one of the only ones on this blog who doesn’t see this whole thing through pro-coach, anti-media lenses. (Update: I guess George W. Beadle is one of the others. Nice post, George.) Two points:

1) Obviously, there’s a lot of stupid rumors going around (Mangino? Seriously?). But the only questions that were put to Pelini yesterday were not about far-fetched, rabid rumors. They were about something said firmly, on the record, by a coach who would know. That’s a totally reasonable question, and it’s one you’re going to get asked anywhere. It’s not even close to making anything up. And honestly, that’s the only real question I think Bo needs to answer right now – though it’s probably going to take a lot of explaining and raise a lot of new questions to do so.

2) Where the heck is Bo going to go where fans don’t read or pass on rumors about the program, or where they don’t ask obvious questions about precarious coaching situations? Answer: A place where fans don’t care. Believe me: This goes on at every single big-time college football program in the country. Every. Single. One. All this angst is just new to Nebraska because we’ve had such coaching stability (and because nobody cared when people ran with rumors and speculation about Callahan, since we all hated him).

Anxious fans are not hurting the program. If Bo can’t handle the passion that comes with a devoted fan base, then that’s his problem, not ours. Does that mean we should spread rumors around indiscriminately? Of course not. But berating fans for being curious about pretty obvious signs at a coaching change is just as silly.

by Cheeseandcorn on Feb 3, 2011 12:29 PM CST up reply actions   2 recs

Agree with all of this....

….especially that Bo should be able to handle it. However, the man should also be able to go about his business without all of this. We have no idea what’s going on and yet some of us are spreading rumors around indiscriminately.

Berating fans for being curious is wrong…but berating the coach for not saying anything in a situation we know very little about is just as wrong.

by jkstar09 on Feb 3, 2011 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

"...but berating the coach for not saying anything in a situation we know very little about is just as wrong."

So Dirk Chatelain asking a pointed series of questions (that Dirk already knew the answers to) was wrong?

Dirk knew Sanders had resigned at the time of the teleconference but he thinks enough of Bo/the program to not report anything without their “blessing”.

As has been said by many past Nebraska coaches who have coached elsewhere, the media here is far from malicious. Steve Sipple and Mitch Sherman know what goes on within the university almost as fast as the school’s SID.

If the Nebraska media was trying to push Bo or any of his staff out the door, they could do a whole hell of a lot of PR damage by simply peeling off the first few layers on anyone on this staff.

Don’t sound so damned myopic, you make the rest of us look bad.
