"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne

Kansas likes the fatties. Turner was to skinny for the job.

The funniest thing about this is that twitter is blowing up about this and there has been only one note about the NBA players Assoc. agreeing on the collective barganing agreement. More people apparently care about Kansas football than the NBA.

Are Florida fans cheering?

Damn, I knew no one cared about the NBA labor problems.

Sounds like the Callahan hire

KU will regret going for a big name. Weis is a good NFL OC. Not so great as a college head coach.

Okay, now that I've stopped laughing...

Here’s what I think.

I like Turner Gill, and I think that firing him after two seasons was a bad move. I think he should have gotten at least one more year. But in all honesty, is it possible to do any worse than Turner did? He was what, 1-15 in Big 12 play? Most of those losses weren’t even competitive. Kansas football has low standards, and if they can have a guy there who can bring them to a bowl game every couple years and at least compete most of the time, the fans there will be happy.

Really, it’s the perfect gig for Weiss because it will be really hard to screw up. The expectations are low in Lawrence, and I think that Charlie Weiss can meet them.

Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

Expectations are low?

They’re an Orange Bowl-caliber team, and if a coach isn’t going to get us back there, he’s gone in two years! He had a lot of talent in the cupboard, y’know! At Kansas, we reload, not rebuild.

::snickers::

Seriously, I get what you’re saying. And yeah, things looked pretty bad for Gill. But if you have low expectations, I don’t think you fire a guy after only two years. That’s really just one full recruiting class. That’s it. He had so little time to build anything there, they were so quick to dump him.

I really hope you're right.

Four years of mediocrity under Weis should be enough time for Paul Rhoads to build up Iowa State into a Big 12 powerhouse.

I could not believe it

I thought it was a joke at first. Other than his first two seasons at Notre Dame, he was an epic failure. This past season at Florida the offense, his specialty, was terrible as well.

Way to upgrade Kansas…

With the hiring of Charlie Weis...

Kansas is going to be a preseason top 20 team.

Why?

B/c anyone who is associated with Notre Dame football is OVERRATED!!!!!!

by CrazyBoutTheGreen on Dec 9, 2011 3:48 PM CST reply actions

Fact is

Turner’s defense was so horrible (might not be a strong enough adjective) that it is a wonder he made it through the season. You can handle losing if it looks like you are going to get better but they looked to be getting worse and worse. I like Gill but I didn’t like some of his staffing decisions. If I remember correct he was using some of the staff that helped Frank out the door at Nebraska. Some of that staff is also back on the sidelines for the Huskers as well. And when we struggle it’s usually at the o-line where it starts. Just an observation.

by Huzkerfan on Dec 12, 2011 8:26 PM CST reply actions

Not entirely...

I did see one of Billy C’s flunkies on Gill’s KU staff…but not former Huskers. And in defense of the KU defense, Gill had to replace Carl Torbush as d-coordinator after he was diagnosed with cancer last summer. So I think some of those defensive issues were out of Gill’s control. And it’s not like Mangino left much talent on the roster either.

by Husker Mike on Dec 13, 2011 10:39 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Everybody

keeps saying that Mangino didn’t leave him anything to work with. I don’t know that because I don’t follow KU football very close so it could be true but it sounds like its passing the buck. Snyder probably didn’t have much to work with at KSU and they should end up in the top ten this season.
