I was under the impression that we wanted Wisconsin to win

Mostly just because they beat us and we beat MSU, so if it came down to us vs. msu or wisconsin for a bowl bid, our head to head victory would somehow give us an advantage….

Am I wrong?

It definitely helped that we basically handed them the game in Madison on a platter via turnovers and blown coverages. Wisconsin is very very good at home.

However, neither Michigan State nor Wisconsin are good on the road. I think it helped that we got Michigan State after a bye week and an easy win at Minneosta, while they just came off a huge emotional upset against Wisconsin.

As for tonight’s game, since both are really good at home and inconsistent on the road…at a neutral site, it was really a toss-up as to which team would show up. So far it looks like Michigan State is the team that is responding well.

by ~OnlyJade~ on Dec 3, 2011 10:11 PM CST up reply actions

OSU's D looks bad because of their conference.

Big 12 has high powered offenses which strain defenses and result in high points.

The SEC appears to have great defenses because their offenses, well, suck.

Fox really needs to crank the crowd noise. It’s such a difference when you switch between Fox’s broadcast and ABC’s broadcast. They crank the crowd noise and it makes the game seem more exciting and energetic…you can barely even hear the announcers. Meanwhile, Fox turns the crowd noise to almost non-existent levels and I feel like I’m watching a high school game.

I'm guessing they'll blame the player

I don’t know if they win though…think about it. Wisconsin still had all their timeouts, and they’d have 1st and goal. If Wisconsin held them to a field goal, they’d use all their timeouts and get the ball back with a minute left, only needing a field goal to win. If Sparty scores right away, Wisconsin gets the ball back with all three timeouts needing a touchdown to win.

It’s a lot of “what-ifs” but I’m just saying that there’s no guarantee that Michigan State would have won the game if that roughing the kicker hadn’t happened.

She was like “This is their first one ever? Why wouldn’t they have a championship before?” And then I explained to her that we never used to have a conference championship game before 1996 (we were both in elementary school then, and she isn’t exactly a huge football follower).

So then she said, “How did they know who won the conference without a conference championship?” I told her it was based on their records at the end of the year and head to head results. She looked at me like that sounded really lame.

I was struck by the up and down nature of the league. The lack of instability is great. Delany really does a nice job managing the league.

I should clarify

The “up and down” comment referred to the play on the field and the utter uselessness of the transitive property in predicting the outcome of the games. The lack of instability referred to the political situation in the conference and Delany’s leadership.

Glad you see it as a positive

I’ve always liked Nebraska, when I heard you were joining us I was really excited. Having followed this blog most of the year I have found Nebraska fans to be very well informed and very cordial. I’m looking forward to having someone else to root for in the future.

by GoGreenGoWhite on Dec 3, 2011 11:25 PM CST up reply actions

Loved it

Why didn’t we join this league 100 years ago?

It’s our brand of football. That, and there seems to be a whole lot more respect for each other than there was in the Big 12. There is even a sense of unity. At the end of the day there is a “we are the Big 10 and we are proud of our conference” kind of feel. In the Big 12 it seemed like everyone hated each other. And I say this confidently- Ohio State fans are much more likable than Texas fans.

I think overall, the league is tougher. The Big 12 was very top heavy, with giants like Texas and Oklahoma to worry about every year. In the Big 10 there are some weak teams, but for the most part you’ve got to bring your A game every week or a team like Northwestern will make you pay. There are a lot more close games and upsets in the Big 10, and truly anything can happen every week. It makes it very exciting to follow! Go Big 10, and go big red!

What did you think of our program and our fan base in our first year in the Big 10? Do we fit in? Or will there still be that awkward “you’re the new guy” feel for a while?

Good fit

We don’t expand often but going by the Penn St. experience I think this is very similar. A high quality school with quality support from their fans. I haven’t heard anyone say why did we add them….mainly it was great, another powerhouse we have to find a way not to lose too consistantly. We all have some very intense rivals but you are right, for the most part its family. I may beat up my little sibling but no one else is allowed too type thing. I can’t wait to see how your bball and other sports fit in and can’t wait for Nebraska fans to come to East Lansing next year. Go Green! Go Big Red! Go B1G!

by GoGreenGoWhite on Dec 3, 2011 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

Please pardon me for bragging,

but our volleyball team won the B1G championship in their first year…then proceeded to lose in the second round of the NCAA tourney. But, hey, we broke the strangle-hold Penn State has had on VB for the last eight years.

Nice!

Do you guys have a hockey team? I haven’t looked. B1G is starting its own hockey league next year, we finally got 6 teams last year so they planned the start of our own hockey league.

by GoGreenGoWhite on Dec 3, 2011 11:53 PM CST up reply actions

I just heard about the hockey league

Yeah we don’t have a hockey team, and I don’t know if we’d be able to get one started down here because no one plays hockey growing up and it would be super hard to get recruits. There is a minor league hockey team in Lincoln, or at least I think there was anyways…so who knows.

I for one would be very interested if we had a hockey team, but I don’t know if many other people would be. I don’t know if we could compete very well against the northern schools.

by Billgrip on Dec 3, 2011 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

Title IX nixes the hockey idea.

That and Omaha already has a team and the competition for recruits would make it a tough sell.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha has a hockey team

That competes in Division I. They’re usually pretty good, although I can’t say I follow them closely.

Well if Omaha has a hockey team

Then Lincoln certainly can as well!

PSU

Just started a team to make it 6 B1G teams I think. So you wouldn’t be the only ones dipping your toes in the ice for the first time.

UNL has a club team.

Title IX won’t let it be funded.

Volleyball went pretty well

Men’s basketball will be average to below average. Women’s basketball was pretty good a couple years ago, and it looks like it’s turning into a good program, we definitely have the right coach there. No one has any idea what to expect for baseball, we just got a new coach.

There’s some other sports too, but no one around here ever talks about them. I think we’re pretty good at Women’s bowling, haha. I would love to see us join in on hockey, but I don’t know if it would ever happen. Plus we would get killed.

baseball

you may be in better shape than most of us for baseball. Aside from random good years I think the B1G is generally hampered by the long winters. The southern states always get the jump on us for practicing and good players.

by GoGreenGoWhite on Dec 3, 2011 11:57 PM CST up reply actions

That was a big problem for us when we were in the Big 12

Hopefully we will be more competitive in this league. Last year I dont think we even won a big 12 game in baseball.

by Billgrip on Dec 3, 2011 11:58 PM CST up reply actions

We frankly should own in baseball

We were dreadful last year and still had an RPI 20 places higher than the Big Ten Champ (who I think was MSU?).

by jdhusker on Dec 3, 2011 11:58 PM CST up reply actions

I think we did

Local coverage of the smaller sports here kind of stinks actually. I know MSU has dumped a lot of money into those sports in the last few years. We built new stadiums/fields for baseball, softball, soccer and field hockey. I don’t think baseball is usually much of a power here though. UofM has been more of the conference power historically I believe.

We also have /will have an indoor practice facility for baseball and softball.

That, and there seems to be a whole lot more respect for each other than there was in the Big 12.

We took a vote (well, kinda) and we demand a thread for next week’s Army -Navy game.

We’re going to side up according to our ancestors military affiliation, and talk the meanest, most vile smack during the game.

Sound good?

I don’t have much of a military history in my family. Both of my grandpas were Army conscripts and my uncle was a Marine in the Gulf War. Which side do I land on?
