Reports: Carl Pelini Will Replace Schnellenberger at Florida Atlantic

ESPN, CBS Sports, Sports Illustrated, and SB Nation are all reporting tonight that Carl Pelini has agreed to become Flordia Atlantic's next head coach. The official announcement won't take place until Monday, as FAU will play Louisiana-Monroe this Saturday in Howard Schnellenberger's final game as head coach.

Among the other candidates for the FAU job was former Arizona head coach Mike Stoops, who apparently is being courted now by Ohio State to be the new defensive coordinator. That probably means that Stoops may not be a candidate to replace Carl at Nebraska.

Star-divide

So who will replace Carl Pelini at Nebraska? My instinct suggests that perhaps John Papuchis could be promoted up, or perhaps Mike Ekeler could return for the Nebraska coordinator position. Deep down, I would love to see Marvin Sanders back on the staff, but I think the issues that led to his departure last winter will prevent that.

Pelini has quite a rebuilding project awaiting him in south Florida. Florida Atlantic is 1-10 on the season, and the Owls have been below .500 the previous two years. ESPN's Joe Schad reports that Florida Atlantic is looking for discipline, recruiting, and organization out of Pelini. He also reports that Tom Osborne recommended Pelini to Florida Atlantic.

And thus ends the era of "Carlfense" at Nebraska. No word as to whether Pelini will arrive in South Florida via helicopter...or if Schnellenberger will depart in the same fashion.

Take it as a compliment I guess

Things are probably going ok if your coaches are getting poached. The reality is that Carl probably wasn’t going to build his resume much here because the vast majority of the credit for NU’s defensive quality has been and would continue to be credited to Bo.

Honestly this could be an opportunity for Bo in terms of staffing. I could see him and maybe Papuchis taking the co-DC role and getting a dynamite recruiter for a defensive position or maybe ST coach.

I think so

It’d be nice to see him stick around to coach the bowl game. I wonder who is replacement is going to be. Mike Stoops would be a home run in terms of experience and pedigree. I think at this point I’d bet on Ekeler though. He’s a Nebraska guy and the players loved him. Pelini could certainly take him under his wing the first few years and teach him the system.

I like the energy and potential of Nebraska’s younger coaches, but I think they get burned sometimes by the relative lack of experience.

I don’t think Bo would like that too much…

Regardless of who’s here or not, it would be great to see Bo hire a big name rather than a “guy he trusts” (a.k.a. friend from Youngstown)

I just hope Bo makes an announcement about who's replacing Carl soon

I hate speculating and reading rumors for months and months, like we did last year regarding the offensive coordinator position.

The good news is that we are one of the few programs in the country that can lose our DC and not worry at all that the defense will take a step back next year. Although I guess it depends who Bo hires and how much he’s involved with the defense next year. Remember that he took a bit of a step back from it this year and tried to be equally involved with all areas.

Did Bo Pelini suddenly get stupid?

Some people act like Pelini suddenly got stupid and forgot how to coach defense. That’s a very ignorant point of view. First of all, we had to replace some of the best guys in our secondary because they graduated last year. There were a bunch of inexperienced guys out on the field and it took most of them until about halfway through the season before they finally started to click. Injuries were a huge factor…and then there’s that little thing about facing 11 entirely new opponents and offenses.

Bo Pelini is still the same coach who took one of the worst defenses in the country and made it the best in two seasons. I don’t think he had the right players or enough experience on the defensive side to have a great year.

Everyone was so distracted by the “big 3” (Crick, David, and Denard) during the offseason that they forgot that it takes 11 guys to play defense, and that there were a lot of question marks at the other 8 spots. Then Denard gets hurt in the preseason and our secondary was exposed for it’s lack of depth while our rookie corners got burned again and again because they weren’t ready to play yet. Crick goes out for the season and suddenly we realize we don’t have all that much experience behind him on the defensive line. Lavonte David was the only one of the three that made it all year and lived up to the hype.

Our secondary problems were so bad that Andrew Green and Ciante Evans were losing their jobs to guys who didn’t even know how to play the position, like Jean-Baptiste and Corey Cooper. But the lights did come on for those guys, and that’s why Andrew Green and Ciante Evans got back on the field in the second half of the season. With injuries to the defensive line, suddenly we had guys like Justin Jackson and Jay Guy on the field, and Carl Pelini admitted he didn’t plan on them getting much, if any playing time at all this season.

People criticize Corey Raymond but clearly don’t know what they are talking about. Our pass defense is currently the 18th best in the country and 12th if you take out non-conference games. Not bad for a first year guy who had to replace a bunch of NFL talent with a bunch of inexperienced players who really didn’t get it until about halfway through the season.

When you dig a little deeper, it makes a lot of sense that the defense took a step back, and it has nothing to do with Bo Pelini’s defensive system and coaching. In fact, all things considered it’s pretty amazing that they are still

by Billgrip on Dec 2, 2011 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

And I'd like to add

Lavonte David made it all year and lived up to the hype, but he didn’t have much help from his supporting cast in the linebacker group. Will Compton finally started to play really well in the second half of the season, but for the most part Lavonte David was trying to do the job of three guys.

Couple B1G coaches in need of work

Just throwing out a couple longshots with B1G recruiting ties.

Tom Bradley: Been running Penn St’s X’s & O’s for a while, usually has a pretty good D, and recruiting coordinator as well.

Zook: Good recruiter, had good defenses at every stop, and as a defensive coordinator again, wouldn’t be allowed to make any late game decisions with timeouts/going-for-it-on-fourth-down/throwing-when-up-3-TDs/etc.

All that said, Stoops #1, Ekler #2 in my rankings. Hopefully boyhood friends trump a state in loyalty.

Zook would be good.

He would have to swallow his pride to work here though because its not “his” defense anymore, its Bo’s. I would love him as a recruiter though, he could get us some elite level talent for sure, and then Bo and Company (Bo and Co???) could coach them to play like we need them.

Zook should be a full time ace recruiter, DC in name only, and maybe give him D ends or something…

It would still be Bo’s D, but Zook has had good D’s and could contribute something, but he’d be great as an ace recruiter. Possibly a short stay, but maybe he realizes he’s a Dick Lebeau and not a Mike Tomlin after being fired twice.

by TheFugMonster on Dec 2, 2011 5:47 AM CST via mobile reply actions

If you fire Bo, who replaces him?

Nobody has had a good answer to me on this question yet. Here is a list of a few of the coaches hired the same offseason as Bo. He may not be the most successful in the bunch, but he’s far from the worst.

Good Hires:
Petrino – Arkansas
Briles – Baylor
Sumlin – Houston

Lateral Move (no better, no worse):
Johnson – Georgia Tech
Fedora – Southern Miss

Already fired or taken another job:
Sherman – ATM
Nutt – Ole Miss
Kill – Northern Illinois
Rodriguez – Michigan
Neuheisel – UCLA
Stewart – West Virginia

The point is, there is a much better chance of moving sideways or backwards than of moving forwards, especially if you fire a coach who has been mostly successful (4 straight 9 win seasons, 2 conference title games, 2-1 bowl record).

by newbie34 on Dec 2, 2011 7:30 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Bo Pelini is successful if you consider him among his class of first-time head coaches.

Helicopter Howie is still the head coach until tomorrow...

…and I bet that FAU wants to respect Howard by not formally putting anything in writing until then. Doesn’t mean that there haven’t been discussions and an informal agreement isn’t in place.

Bo brought Carl along to get his coaching career jump started again. It was a reach to make him a coordinator in 2008, as he was just an assistant coach prior to that with Solich at Ohio. I do recall there was a little controversy in 2003 because Bo wanted Carl on the staff then, but Frank was only willing to let him be a GA.

And do not always have the best ear to the ground back home. Speaking with cousins about this, I was informed that Carl is having an affair, is this true? I have tried to find information via internet, but only got rumor-type information.

I do not think Stoops is a reach and he may want a DC position to reclaim some zeal before searching for another HC position. I trust Bo and will trust his decision for DC.

Final thought, anyone calling for the “other Pelini” to now leave, please explain to me why you want Bo gone. He has posted at least 9 wins every year so far. This program was on life support when he arrived and now we have been consistently winning. He is a firey guy and I like that. Remember, Dr. Tom always had 9 win seasons and he was our guy for 25 years. I remember people calling for his head, but come on. Give Bo some credit here. He resurrected the program after the dark times and this is a VERY young team. A very young team that has won 9 games. I cannot wait for next year. Everyone is one more year experienced. We will get another national championship one day, that I promise you all. Just not this year, maybe not next, but we will. Have faith in the Red.

by BIGRED J on Dec 2, 2011 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

Denard Robinson will be the toughest mobile QB, but certainly not the only mobile QB

But besides him, we have actually have SEVERAL others to worry about. Here’s a quick list of mobile QB’s we face next season, their year, and what school they are from.

Braxton Miller, So, Ohio State- He’s already improved a bunch this year, and he’s the type of QB that could thrive in Urban Meyer’s offense.

Kain Colter, So, Northwestern- this kid was the biggest factor in our embarrassing home loss to Northwestern

Denard Robinson, Sr, Michigan- we all saw what happened this year, he absolutely shredded our Defense, and I’d guess he’ll be more consistent next season

Rob Bolden, Jr, Penn State- unless he transfers out, I’d guess he will improve enough to be the guy next year for Penn State

Marquis Gray, Sr, Minnesota- we stopped him this year but he was dealing with some injuries and he gave some teams fits…has the athleticism to be a great QB

And who knows what kind of QB’s we will face in non-conference, and what kind of QB’s will replace Wilson at Wisconsin and Cousins at Michigan State. Basically what this list says is that if we don’t figure out how to be better against mobile QB’s, next season could be very very difficult.

Pelini has told us over and over how hard it is to stop a mobile QB. But after repeatedly being embarassed by mobile QB’s and seeing other teams figure out how to stop them, I think that just saying “it’s just really hard to stop a mobile quarterback” isn’t good enough.

Let's see

Miller- genuine trouble there, I’ve already got next year in Columbus penciled in as an L.

Colter – Undoubtedly talented and he’ll make his plays, but Nebraska is a lot better than NW. It took a big off day by our offense to lose to them by 3 this year, I think we’ll be ok next year.

Robinson – He’s extremely dangerous, but honestly I’m more worried about the continued improvement of Michigan’s defense next year. Robinson didn’t beat us this year, our mind blowing mistakes did most of the damage with an assist from some pretty terrible one sided officiating.

Rob Bolden – He’s nominally mobile, but he was Matt McGloin’s backup this year. That’s all we need to know.

Marquis Gray – Good athlete, can’t throw, doesn’t have much help around him and the Gophers come to Lincoln next year.

Of those 5 mobile qb’s, I’d pencil in 3 wins, 1 loss and one tossup (Michigan).

Wisconsin and Penn State are going to be tough home games but I think we will win, and Michigan State is a tough road game but I think we will win.

I was going to post a response to this...

…but jdhusker kindly did the legwork for me below.

You’re right about Braxton Miller, I overlooked him. The others…meh. Kain Coulter has some scrambling ability, but he’s not Denard Robinson. Marquies Gray can’t pass, which very much matters. I guarantee you Wisconsin will not have a QB next year who can scramble like Russell Wilson. Rob Bolden…is Rob Bolden.

Whoops...

…jdhusker’s legwork was ABOVE. ;-)

the

“Carl Pelini is having an affair” thing comes up constantly. First it’s with a booster’s daughter. Then a booster’s wife. Hell, it probably includes cheerleaders.

Here’s the thing about these rumors. They are constant. If you went across the college football landscape, got ahold of every team in the country, you would most likely be shocked at the number of “coach affair with cheerleader” rumors you’d find.

I think someone ought to do a human behavior study on it. We see people in a position of power and we assume that just because they’re in that position that they can get with whomever they want. Does it happen? Sure it does, but holy shit, the amount of rumors – there hasn’t been a coaching staff at Nebraska under which these rumors didn’t exist.

and here's my thing about these kinds of rumors

I really fucking bugs the hell out of me that people will go around whispering this bullshit, but freak out if it’s posted anywhere online, or anything is said publicly.

My position – if you’re going to go around whispering this stuff, you ought to have the balls enough to post it somewhere if you’re wondering about it.

My name is attached to this post. Carl Pelini could call me any time he wants, and say “Hey, what’s up with you spreading rumors about me?” and I’d have to answer to him.

Whisperers are free to do as they wish.

I remember hearing the same thing about Solich

Funny how its always the bad coaches, never the good ones who cheat.

Google's homepage celebrates too much shit.

I think Craig Bohl actually did right?

I think he was our last confirmed case.

If not, sorry…he doesn’t qualify.

Bo

will chose someone who will take orders from him and do what he wants when he wants it done plain and simple. The defense at Nebraska is Bo’s baby. We had a DC but lets face he was more a figure head. I think Carl probably learned and helped a lot but when it came to scheme and decision making does anybody really think it was Carl’s scheme or Bo’s???
