Joe Paterno Fired, Tom Bradley Will Be Interim Coach
Joe Paterno has been fired by the Penn State Board of Trustees. Tom Bradley will be the interim coach Saturday, assuming that there's still a game to be played.
If you're wondering what the Penn State population is thinking, you can take a look at our SB Nation Penn State site Black Shoe Diaries.
I can only hope at this point that the Penn State students show restraint.
Consider this your open thread for any comments on the Penn State situation. The football game is secondary at this point.

As I posted on another thread,
I live about 1/2 mile from campus and I’ve seen police cars streaming into town, so something is definitely going down.
I understand the board’s decision, and agree that it is in the best interest of the university. At the same time, I think the fan-base and students are going to feel frustrated by not being allowed to say good-bye to their legendary coach on Senior Day this weekend.
Hopefully, emotions are vented tonight without anything bad happening.
I think those of you urging Husker fans to stay away from Happy Valley this weekend are incorrect. I still plan to attend the game, and if I have any reason to think otherwise once I take in to the campus climate tomorrow, I’ll be sure to post tomorrow.

What's scary is ...
I haven’t seen a single poster on the PSU blog express one moment of concern for the victims, or even an understanding of why this had to happen.
I live in Wisconsin – an hour from Madtown, but right now they are making ‘20 square miles surrounded by reality’ look like a miss manners convention.

Bah - first post, should add I'm a husker alum living in wisconsin, not a badger fan (if it matters)
Welcome!
You make your first post at a very interesting time…
Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.
I’ve read this blog for years, but I was a member of the marching band (I’m a recent grad) and I’d seen members get shown the door for getting involved in social media. It wasn’t something I wanted to chance.
One of my co-workers went to penn state and for whatever reason this story really struck a chord, I haven’t been able to do anything else.
Just the lack of concern for the victims is astonishing. I am having a really hard time understanding how those students at the PSU campus just can’t see that. Hopefully by Saturday they’ll be calmed down enough to see outside of State College, but I’m not holding my breath…
Just saw this on the College Football Live feed, by the way https://twitter.com/?photo_id=1#!/jon_wertheim/status/134482548444237824/photo/1
There was a prayer vigil
at the Lion Shrine last night for the victims, but that doesn’t sell newspapers.
I'd imagine it wasn't nearly as big (or potentially violent) as the gathering that did draw the headlines
That probably has a lot more to do with the distribution of coverage than trying to sell papers.
by Cheeseandcorn on Nov 10, 2011 11:13 AM CST up reply actions
I think you're wrong,
because if they didn’t think it was about selling papers, the media would have been concentrating more on the true monsters of this situation.

This was the right thing to do
Now the University can move on. It is a great institution and will recover from this. In order for the school to keep any kind of trust with parents sending their kids to play their, this was the right thing to do.
Penn St should now move its attention towards the victims and offer to pay for any and all help that they need (therapy, life assistance, etc).
I wanted to post on BSD,,,,
if this was your child, would you still love the coach who refused to report these crimes to authorities??? Didn’t want to stir the pot though!!!

When
the emotions cool over there, a lot of them will realize this was the right thing to do and Joe brought it on himself.
Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.
We do realize it was the right thing to do
and the BSD community, including the editors called for the resignations of all involved, including Paterno. It had to be done.
What we don’t like is that this turned into a public lynching. Sandusky is going to get due process. Curley and Schultz are going to get due process. Paterno has already been tried, convicted, and held up as public enemy #1 in the court of public opinion.

My God....
I second everyone else who’s suggesting NU fans stay home this weekend. PSU fans aren’t rational right now, and I’m sure it’ll be taken out on anyone who’s not with “them,” folks in red on Saturday included.
I can’t imagine what the environment is going to be like on Saturday. I expect Penn State to play angry and stupid on Saturday. Hopefully we get out of there with a win and our team’s health.

I don't agree
Unless the psyche of this town just goes completely off the cliff, I have a very hard time believing that Husker fans, myself included, have anything to worry about by attending the game this weekend.
The community here, as far as I can tell, is simply dealing with the fact that Joe is no longer the coach. NU factors into this not at all, except that they will be keen to beat us on Saturday.
Speculating that husker fans will be negatively targeted is simply unfounded. It’s irrational to suggest that this community will be anything but welcoming of husker fans, as it has been of all visiting teams in the short time that I have been here.

Sure, circumstances are different...
…but this has nothing to do with the University of Nebraska. Everything that is going on downtown and on campus tonight has to do with Penn State and the board’s decision.
Obviously, husker fans should be sensitive to what has transpired here in the last week, but suggestions that husker fans are at risk of ill treatment by PSU fans seem irrational to me.
Again, if I get a different vibe from campus in the next few days I’ll be sure to post here.

Harvey Perlman's statement about Graham Spanier
“Looking ahead to Saturday’s game, others will pour many issues into this football game. Nebraska’s participation in no way condones the conduct that has been alleged or makes a statement about the truth or falsity of the allegations. In the end the game is about the student-athletes from both institutions who have worked hard to be in a position to play football on Saturday. I hope all fans will be respectful of the contest between these student-athletes, even as we share in the outrage of what is alleged and the pain suffered by the victims.”

This kind of stuff should never be a topic of college football. I look forward to the days where a fumble or interception are the worst things on my mind concerning collegiate football.

Your right
How this whole thing has been handled, has been a PR disaster on top of a PR train wreck. As soon as the indictment was released, all those involved (Paterno to Spanier) should of been put on immediate administrative leave/gag order until a decision could be made. Instead they let Joe call the shots and of course he said he was not going so they worked out a deal for him to leave at the end of the season. Only problem is that the damage was done and having him stay would of been gut wrenching for everyone. They realized this and finally did the right thing. What a mess.
Nah.
They should’ve called someone underneath him and let them run it up the ladder to him.

Penn changed their statue of limitations for a crime against a minor in 2007. Any victims can report and seek justice until they are 50. So at least the victims will get justice out of this and Sandusky will pay.

I know I'm going to catch Hell for this but...
I disagree with Penn State’s actions thus far.
Yes. The school and individuals including Paterno did not handle this situation properly from that exact second it began however many years ago. We hear a lot about what this person did or did not do but we do not know for certain yet the true story.
Yes. The accusations against Sandusky are extremely serious and are absolutely atrocious on any scale of criminal or social behavior.
Yes. Once this entire situation is over with and all individuals are fired, resign, brought into the court of law and sentenced (or exonerated); everyone associated with the Paterno regime should be flushed out of the athletic department and Penn State should start from scratch rebuilding their program, reputation and brand.
But what I don’t agree with is the fact the board of trustees has decided to take such a drastic move in firing Paterno based solely on hearsay. Until Sandusky is brought to trial and all of the facts come out under oath in the court of law, these are still only allegations. Now there is obviously something to these allegations given all of the resignations and firings going on but Paterno agreed to retire after this season and I personally think that would have been sufficient for both parties (Penn State & Paterno) to part ways.
I know most or all won’t agree with what I’m saying because most are thinking about the victims of this scandal and I too feel terrible that any child should ever have to hear about this situation, let alone, live it.
The point I’m trying to make is this country guarantees due process to all and I see Penn State firing Paterno as putting the cart before the horse. Everyone is making Joe Paterno a villian in this situation before we have actual proof any of the Sandusky allegations are true and the stories we have heard through the media are accurate.
I’m not defending anybody including Paterno because I don’t know the entire story. I just see this firing as being premature but once all of the facts are known, I could very well disagree with every word I have typed.
I welcome the hate messages I’m sure I will receive for this opinion I have written.

Great statement by Dan Wetzel
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=dw-wetzel_penn_state_spanier_silent110711
It’d be a fine message for Spanier to express, someone to show there is a steady hand on the rudder as the storm rages. Instead he’s failing every test of leadership.
No explanations. No accountability. No apologies.
There’s been just a single abhorrent statement, self-centered and inappropriate, unconditional support for the accused, no mention of those victimized kids.
Instead the plan appears to be to send Joe Paterno out there, 84-years-old and hard of hearing. Let JoePa be the face of this thing. Let JoePa handle the fire, answer the questions, get picked apart by the national media. Let it all be about JoePa.
Considering we have a highly-regarded school of communications, I’m just flabbergasted by how badly we’ve handled the PR in all of this.
Read the indictment.
Then get back to us.
Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.
*if you can get thru it.
Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.
Indictments are written to be extremely persuasive.
I have not read it and really don’t intend to because I have read plenty of them in my career and to be straight forward, much of an indictment is throwing everything at the individual and seeing what sticks. The document is drafted to build the case against the individual and convince the judicial system to bring them to trial so of course you will find horrendous accusations in it.
I understand the media circus that would surround the game if Paterno was on the sideline on Saturday but that circus won’t shrink now.
Again, I’m looking at this in the way it should be viewed…through the eyes of the law. The social backlash is a separate monster that will still have to be tackled whether or not Paterno was allowed to stay.

Your only choice is to distance yourself from it as much as possible. Heads had to roll. Just the reality of it.

I agree.
And in the first week of January, Paterno would have been gone. Either way, time will tell if the school made the right move. When Sandusky goes to trial and is convicted assuming all is true, I will eat my words. Until then, I see this as a witch hunt of sorts. Firing Paterno will not make this easier on Penn State in any way. Not sure if they thought it would but that’s the justification they MAY be using.

Wow.
I did not see riots coming. Unreal.
Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.
I missed that then.
This is ridiculous, even for dumb kids.

it was hard to tell if that was real, but… man…. that emotion has to go somewhere.

Well, kids. I have a job and family to tend to in the morning. Need some sleep
Sad deal for the victims, Sad deal for the PSU players and fans, Sad day for college athletics. I hope College Station doesn’t burn tonite.
Hello Nebraska Fans
I’m a PSU alum, and I just wanted to talk with you guys about everything that’s happened.
I have tickets to Saturday’s game (if it happens). I was really looking forward to playing you guys, as I am very happy to have you in the conference. Now I’m not even sure why I still want to go.
I’ve been in a daze for most of the week. I can’t believe all this has happened. I can’t believe that so many children were assaulted on the campus of the university I love so much. I can’t believe that the perpetrator is someone who was constantly praised in our media guides for his work with children! I can’t believe I’m seeing “Penn State” and “scandal” in the same sentence.
Joe could have done more to prevent this, no doubt about it. But as you judge his actions, I do want to point out that he is the only one who has expressed any kind of remorse for what happened. Spanier hasn’t done that, and neither have Curley and Schultz. Joe made a big mistake, but I hope that the mistake doesn’t negate all the other good he has done over the years for both Penn State and college football.
I’m just trying to make sense of it all. I think the board made the right decision to fire Joe, though I think huskerforlife15 makes some good points. However, I do share the sentiments of posters on BSD who wonder why the other people who could have stopped this are allowed to go out on their own terms.
In closing, we’re not bad people, and the students who are out in the streets do not represent what we are about. I want to encourage you all to come out, and I hope that someday I’ll be able to make the trip out to Lincoln to see us play one day.
Thanks for reading this.

Great post
You make some great points. You seem to be the most rational Penn State fan I’ve seen today.
I don’t think any fan base can truly grasp what you are going through right now. The only way we can even imagine something close to this is if it happened to Tom Osborne. It’s too bad that all this happened this week, we were really looking forward to facing you as well and its too bad we can’t possibly have a “normal” game right now.
I hope things get figured out in State College, and I hope your fan base somehow heals from this.
Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.
Not sure that's possible
We might find a way to live with it, but healing? I don’t know. The victims will certainly find it hard to heal.
everybody
could have done more to prevent this. that’s one of the saddest things about it.
hell, this was one game I’ve been looking forward to since the join the B1G announcement was made. and in one week everything has been blown all to hell.
i hope the best for your university, obviously the victims, again, all this is just plain friggin’ nuts.

There is one really bad person...
…a monster, really. His last name is Sandusky.
Several other people made serious, grave mistakes that they are being held accountable for.
Keep your head up. It’s always darkest before the dawn…and it’s awfully dark in State College tonight.
Good luck. And thanks for stopping by.
Well said.

If what I was told tonight about the details of the new allegation in Sandusky child sex case is true, it will horrify the public.

I can confirm there will soon be new, major allegation involving child sex abuse in Sandusky case. Told tonite it could come before Saturday

Move the game to Lincoln?
Given the student riots tonight at PSU, the Big Ten may want to consider moving the game to Lincoln for safety reasons.

I'd love it
But I’m not sure how the logistics would work….at all.

I agree...
Yeah, it would be a logistical nightmare for UNL, but I don’t know that having a game at PSU is a good idea.

The only thing that I could think of
Would be for the University to make the Iowa tickets good for both PSU and Iowa. Or something. And have PSU foot the bill for the expenses incurred by Nebraska to host the game. But like Billgrip says below, I think if the game doesn’t happen in Happy Valley, it goes into the record books as a 1-0 Nebraska win.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Logistically,
wouldn’t that be impossible in such a short time?
They're 18 to 22...how perfect were you at that age?

Yeah I think that a forfeit would be more realistic
Too complex to move a game of this magnitude that short notice.
Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.
If it was just a case of finding a safe place to play...
…moving the game would be easy. Especially with electronic ticketing. Or just play it in an empty stadium. Play in Philly or Pittsburgh.
But when you consider the bigger issues of trying to hold a University together, I don’t think Penn State has any business playing football this weekend.
I had this thought too.
Would not want to be a Husker fan at this game. Outraged PSU fans just might direct their rage at Red targets on Saturday. Could be dangerous. But don’t think moving the game to Lincoln is logistically feasible. Don’t see a forfeit coming – not on Senior Day. Suppose they’ll play the game as planned – without JoePa that is. So be careful out there, Husker fans. Be respectful. But keep your heads on a swivel.

They said "riot"
like 50 times in a matter of 3 minutes, hoping that saying it enough would make it come true.
Blind loyalty
To anything…is not a good thing. From time to time we are reminded of the fanatic in the “fans”. Their blind loyalty causing an emotional reaction that make them look like asses. I understand completely and hope that in a similar situation I would have the clarity of mind to take a deep breath, step back, and reason myself off the ledge. I hope no one does anything that will come back to haunt them.
hopefully
that has some affect

Can you imagine that phone call?
I mean…they didnt even bother to call him. They sent a messager to his house with a note.
“Call this number immediately”
JoePa: “Uh ya…some guy came to my house and told me to call this number? Who is this?”
BoT: You know who this is. You should have taken our offer to resign. Your services are no longer needed.
or they'll switch to the NBA falling apart.
there are no riots associated with that because nobody gives a shit.

PSU had a mini riot
The BSD folks are a combination of enraged and irrational. We’re mostly just stunned. This is one of those “where were you when..” moments for us as college football fans.

I saw that part
This is just all really sad across the board. I hope nothing terrible happens on Saturday. While Penn State has a mostly good reputation, kids do stupid stuff…

Sorry guys.
We broke up with our date at the dinner table tonight. You’re going to feel awkward on Saturday. Please bear with us.
Don't
like the decision. Joe should buy a ticket for this weekends game and go stick it to the board. It will be a very interesting game and I hope he goes to it. He would probably do the same amount of actual coaching.
Good morning, Husker Nation
Didn’t sleep well last night. Can you blame me? A large part of my identity has been destroyed over the past few days and I’ve been fretting about how to tell my son that his hero has been fired.
The fact that BSD was out of control last night wasn’t surprising to me. But I also think that cooler heads prevail this morning. Many of us can see two sides to the issue (although, for the record, I think the BoT did the right thing last night). We’re also the people who know better than to comment on message boards when emotions are running high, so the BSD comment section was likely not representative of the overall view of most alumni and a good portion of students, too.
I’m not sure what the environment will be like at Penn State this weekend, but I can assure you that you have nothing to fear, provided you don’t poke the hornet’s nest. Come and cheer your team. But if you happen to get into a conversation with a Penn Stater about this horrible string of events, it might be best to just listen respectfully.
After the vandalism, violence, and flipping over of news vans
I doubt you will find nearly as many Nebraska fans willing to spend money in Happy Valley this weekend. Sorry, hope things get better.
Nebraska vs Penn State
the game should be moved perhaps Linclon or a nutural site as this is PSU’s last home game anyway it would only be the right thing to do the only fair thing for both teams………..
I can understand moving it out of Happy Valley, but they can't suddenly move it to Lincoln.
That being said, unless State College becomes volatile in the next 48 hours, they will not even bring it up.
They may have an uptick in morons doing stupid things, but at the end of the day, Saturday is about football and no one should have a problem unless they make it not about football.

why punish the players or fans because of one sick person , it is really a no win game for us as you all no how the media will only foucus on the scandal and Petroino through out the whole game….
One would hope ESPN is making it clear to whichever morons they've assigned to do the morning shift that this topic is off-limits...
