Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

Apparently the Beakers have no patience, as they'll pay Turner Gill $6 million to not coach.

"But he's a LOSER" Beaker fans will cry out.

Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald puts this decision in context:
"* 2-20
* 5-17
* 4-19
* 5-19

"The first number is Mack Brown’s record after two years at North Carolina.

"The second number is Frank Beamer’s record after two tears at Virginia Tech.

"The third number is Kirk Ferentz’s record after two years at Iowa.

"The fourth number is Gene Chizik’s record after two years at Iowa State – which he turned into the Auburn job.

"The 5-19 mark is also what Turner Gill posted in two years at Kansas. He got fired for it."

End quote from Sam McKewon.

Two years is not enough time to evaluate a coach, barring something else unseemly. Turner Gill may not be Mack Brown, Frank Beamer, Kirk Ferentz, or Gene Chizik...but then, Kansas will never know.

But hey, if winning is all you care about, Beakers, Jim Tressel is available.

I haven't done the research to back this up,

but I doubt there were as many insane blowouts as Turner has seen in his two years at KU. More than justified at this point by the KU athletic department.

Turner should've stayed at Buffalo when he got passed over for Bo.

Honestly, no other fan base than ours would’ve allowed him to come in as a head coach and give him the time he needed to fix it.

not only

is it going to cost them a gob of money, whatever coach they hire is going to have to rebuild the program anyway.

Wow. Kansas’ athletic department sure is being run by bozos these days

The KU football program is a tire-fire and they expected him to produce gold in just 2 years??

There are a lot of teams that will love to have Turner. Perhaps ASU will give him a shot?

Shameful

I don’t know what the hell KU was thinking with this move. That’s a ton of money for an athletic department Kansas’s size to give up.

I think you've gotta give a guy at least 3 years

Some of those blowouts were ugly, but if Kansas really wants to have a winning football program (I believe they never will because of moves like these), they have to quit firing coaches and hitting the reset button. It only digs a deeper hole financially and for recruiting.

But, at the same time if Callahan or Pelini went 3-9 and then 2-9, there’s no way in heck either of them would have been around here for a 3rd year.

Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

No, but there's a difference between Kansas football and Nebraska football...

You have to know who you are, and also recognize that the Kansas program had a lot of problems when Turner Gill came in. Even with Todd Reesing and company, they couldn’t get to bowl eligibility in Mangino’s last year. The football players were brawling with the basketball team.

Maybe Kansas will strike gold and find a miracle worker who’ll turn this team around magically. Heck, Iowa State did it after Chizik left for Auburn. But it’s more likely that they’ll spend a bunch more money and start churning.

I just think Kansas fans (and administrators) don’t want to admit that their program was in that bad of shape.

I wasn't expecting this

I was thinking Zook was going to be the first anounced firing.

Technically, Mike Locksley was the first, wasn't he?

Or was it the Tulane coach?

If you’re talking about post-season firings, then I had my money on Ohio State.

All of my friends at KU

Say they’re ecstatic about this…kind of sad

Can't say I blame them

It sucks to get embarrassed week after week – we know the feeling, and it’s awful. But making decisions based on that feeling is where you run into problems.

I like Turner and all

but with a newer AD and with Turner’s penchant for getting blasted off the field the past two years, this wasn’t all that surprising or unwaranted. He’ll get a chance again, but he might have to work his way up to another BCS level job. I hope the best for him, and at least he’s getting paid bank to go work somewhere else.

Always check the words with the red squiggly line. They mean you probably screwed up.
