Postgame - Nebraska vs Iowa Thread - We're the Heroes!
We win, beating iowa 20-7. It was disappointing not getting the shut out, but that's the way things go.
The win does not allow us to get to the Big Ten Championship game, but it does allow us a pretty decent opponent in a bowl game.

I think..
those boys played a pretty solid game. Holding penalties are killing us on big plays. Caputo’s “block” in the back was kind of shady.

Im thinking Capitol One.
Rock out with your Stalk out!!!
Smoke em' if you got em'!!!
Low and Slow!!!
I'm actually gonna guess Capital One
IF Michigan beats tOSU and takes a BCS berth. Then our competition is a 10-3 Sparty (face it, Wisky’s gonna roll them) and I think we win that matchup with our fans and tv ratings and newness.

What if Michigan looses???
Rock out with your Stalk out!!!

Then we're competing with Sparty for the Outback Bowl
Again, I think we get chosen over MSU.

No matter what
At least we know we won’t be in the Insight bowl!

That's
a January game, isn’t it?
They're 18 to 22...how perfect were you at that age?
The Power of Red begins with the Passion of Walk-Ons.
Yeah it's the Big Ten's top non-BCS bowl
We’d get a very tough opponent. The loser of the LSU/Alabama/Arkansas BCS sweepstakes.

Crap
Well I guess we can pencil in another 4-loss season for Pelini. But at least we’d be able to tell how big of a talent gap we have with the SEC.
Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.
I think we'd have a chance against a deflated Arky
The others….not so much.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Our defense would have to play as good as they did against Iowa and Michigan State X2
And Martinez would need to play like a Heisman winner, which he can…but yeah…can’t count on that. We absolutely could not afford turnovers in a game with one of those three.
Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.
I'm praying to God its Arkansas
They don’t have a great power running game, they have an immobile pocket passer for a quarterback, and their defense is good but not pretty much invincible.
Basically they’re very good at what they do, but what they do does play into Nebraska’s strengths a bit.
Either LSU or Alabama would get U.G.L.Y. in a hurry I think.

Our OL

So...
Anyone feeling this rivalry thing we’re supposed to have with Iowa? Or are they going to be the B1G version of Missouri or Kansas State, begging for Nebraska’s attention while we’re worried about the likes of Wisconsin and Ohio State?
Either way, it was nice to beat Iowa soundly (although the shutout would have been better).
I'd vote for the latter.
There’s other Big Ten teams that will get more of our attention.
They're 18 to 22...how perfect were you at that age?

The latter
They remind me immensely of Missouri. Especially their fans. But their football team won’t be able to manage a competitive long term record against us either.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Respectfully,
Iowa isn’t begging for your attention. The Big Ten set us up, and the two schools’ AD’s put the whole “Heroes Game” thing together jointly. Most Iowa fans I’ve talked to are as skeptical as you all are about the “rivalry” notion.
Congratulations on the solid win. Rest assured it was difficult to watch, and we’re looking forward to this time next year in Iowa City.
by Third Generation Hawk on Nov 25, 2011 2:52 PM CST up reply actions
I'd agree its not so much a "begging for our attention"
But as someone who’s spent a few years now in the eastern part of Nebraska, as well as a considerable amount of time in western Iowa, I feel pretty confident in saying that Iowa fans have a special kind of loathing for Nebraska that’s kind of inexplicable considering our (lack of) history.
It reminds me deeply of Missouri and Colorado, both of whom have fan bases that were long ago stricken with Nebraska Derangement Syndrome. The difference being that their bitterness stems from getting pounded for 4 decades, while Iowa has basically no reason to hate us yet.
All that said, I still enjoyed playing those teams, and I’ll enjoy us playing Iowa too. It should be a fun series, but the jury is still way, way out on a “rivalry” as you noted.

Hopefully we'll keep giving them reason to hate us

Who else are going to have as our rival?
Should we be Michigan’s 4th rival? And becuase Michigan has so many that ties up Sparty and the Buckeyes. We will only play Whisky every few years, so that really only leaves Minny, Iowa and Penn State. Penn State will be a good rival but becuase they are in the Leaders division they will be more worried about division rivals.
So its Iowa or Minny.
Iowa right?
So I tried the Barbasol and Rotel dip and I was very dissapointed!
We don't need a rival
If it happens, that’s great, rivalries are fun. If it doesn’t, well we didn’t have one in the Big 12 either.

It's so weird that we're not playing in a championship next week
That statement alone speaks for how well Pelini has done. He’s changed the culture…we compete for championships now. With the previous coaching staff it was weird when we did play for a championship, because it only happened once and we got smoked.
Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.
Yep
Although the fire Pelini brigade will never, EVER admit it, there’s not a one of them that wouldn’t have hired him in 2007 had they been told he’d succeed Callahan with at least 9 wins in each of his first four years.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Everytime
I hear those people, I am reminded that, unfortunately, 90% of fans should just enjoy the game because they have no idea what they are talking about. I include myself (though to be clear I am quite happy with Pelini).
is what keeps me grounded about the game. I don’t tweet, but I love reading the twitter feed on CN.
All it takes is reading one of Yoshi’s tweets about trying to keep his eyes open in a night class, knowing that he’s gone through other classes and at least one grueling practice session, plus weight training and film study that day, to appreciate what these guys are going through.
And, I love Bo too.
They're 18 to 22...how perfect were you at that age?
The Power of Red begins with the Passion of Walk-Ons.
Not to be that guy,
but I think it’s sad that a program as great as Nebraska has been reduced to this. You may not be happy about a 9 win season, but most of you are content. Nebraska underachieved in every way this season, and you’re praising the coach?! Maybe it’s just me, but something about that isn’t right. You guys should be in the national title picture right now, or at least in the B1G championship game shooting for a BCS bowl berth. Not waiting for other teams to lose in hopes of a January bowl.
P.S. That was a sad thing to do at the end of the game. Give him the carries record on a kneel? I mean c’mon.
by Hawkeye_Fan on Nov 26, 2011 12:30 AM CST up reply actions
Since your first ever SB Nation comment is this
I’m guessing that yes, you are very much trying to be “that guy.”
The reality is that this year’s Nebraska team is our youngest in a long time, we had to deal with 11 new opponents, the toughest slate in the Big Ten, and were utterly decimated by injuries, especially to both lines. Was it what we wanted? No, but there are many reasons why this team is 9-3. All things considered, this was a solid year by Nebraska. Not great, but solid. Our record will improve the next couple years as our young talent matures and our schedule eases in 2013. I will also remind you, we’re only 4 years out from the Callahan disaster. Most of us are not so unreasonable to expect national titles so soon after that epic failure.
While we’re on the subject of “underachieving” you might want to take a quick look in the mirror. Iowa had one of the most forgiving schedules in the Big Ten this year and still managed to stumble to a second straight 7-5 regular season finish in year 13 of the Ferentz era. If Iowa had this year’s Nebraska schedule, they almost certainly finish 5-7 and stay home for the holidays. If I were you, I’d be using your first sbnation comments over at BHGP discussing how to set your obviously plateaued and stagnant house in order before you nitpick ours.

We are one of the only teams that could go 9-3 with the record we had
Trust me when I say that as a fan base we are not overly excited with a 9 win season. We want championships, and actually up until that Michigan game we were in contention for the Big 10 title, and before the Northwestern loss we were 7-1 with a shot at a top 5 finish.
Bo Pelini may not have won us a conference title or a national title yet, but he has won at least 9 games in his first 4 seasons as head coach (btw this is his first head-coaching gig), and has turned a program that was ran into the ground by the previous coaching staff into one of the most consistent in the country.
As for the carries record being given to Burkhead with a kneel, so what? Why do you care how our coaching staff decides to handle something like that? It has nothing to do with your school so get a life. Burkhead deserved that 38th carry more than anyone I can think of, and I’m guessing that either in our bowl game or at some point next year he will have a chance to surpass that without having to take a knee.
Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

Wow--Bo's press conference
Apparently Martinez got hurt in the 1st quarter and was unable to run effectively the rest of the day. Also Bo says both Terrance Moore and Baker Steinkuhler got hurt on the very first play against Iowa. That certainly explains Iowa’s success up the middle.

Just make sure you read

It's not even well-done...
…even AJ the Huskerh8er would call it weak…
But BHGP is more of a smack-driven blog than anything…so consider the source.
My God that IS a waste of space
Makes me even more glad we stomped their worthless asses into the ground today. Troll alarm bells go off when an Iowa fan calls Nebraska’s 8-3 (now 9-3) season “a disaster” when his team is now cooling their jets at 7-5 with a much easier schedule. This Iowa team goes 5-7 if they had Nebraska’s schedule.

Yeah,
I was going to scroll through their game threads from today, but after reading that trash piece, I decided it would be just more of the same crap…especially after we handed them their butts.

I wish I would have come to the same conclusion,
but curiosity got the best of me. Wish i would not have read that crap. Read most of the opposing teams’ blogs this year. Iowa has had by far the most classless things to say. Not surprised, just irritated.

You have never played for one, and you never will. I look forward to kicking your ass for years to come.
Like I said before
The comparison to Missouri/Colorado is uncanny (except those two programs have actually had extended periods of success). They’ll never shut up, they’ll treat us like crap in Iowa City. And most years they’ll lose. I sure wouldn’t want it the other way around.

I'd hope
That the midwestern decency that you find in people who live in the region would restrain them some. The hippies in Boulder are probably worse. Even still, the deplorable conduct of the people at BHGP (as well as many Hawkeyes I know in real life) betray a fan base that has been consumed by bitterness. The similarities between Nebraska and Iowa are honestly quite striking. The only difference is that we have a great football program and they never have/never will. I think they feel like fate has cheated them.

Way more venom directed at Nebraska
On top of that, pretty much everything went against Nebraska last week. Iowa didn’t have much specifically to point to today. No fluky turnovers, no horrible special teams, Nebraska blew more opportunities than Iowa did. And most of the bad calls went Iowa’s way. This was just an ass kicking today. Last week was just an epic collapse that came about in a highly fluky manner.

Have you all seen this report? What's up with Suh?
I’ll have to admit, he’s going a little crazy now!

I don't watch much NFL,
but I taped the incident at the Packers game, and what Suh did was absolutely excessive, stupid, fine-and-ejection worthy.
I watched the tape in slo-mo numerous times, and what I saw was Suh, while lying on top of the Packer, slam his head in the turf five times in a row. When he was finally pulled off of him, Suh looked directly at the players extended arm, raised his body up, and slammed his cleated foot on the players arm. I was disgusted.

And, from the article

It’s not like Slauson was a guy who was a team spokesman, i.e. the “not well liked” comment.
But Suh has been acting like an ass in the NFL

Suh issues an apology...
https://www.facebook.com/suh90/posts/317547261589231
Not sure what to make of this. Suh was in the wrong yesterday…period. But he also was provoked by the Green Bay offensive lineman. Both guys were in the wrong yesterday…but Suh was far more wrong.
Mike,
do you have a link to anything that explains what the O-lineman did to provoke Suh?
I love the guy, but what happened yesterday bothered me immensely. I’ d love to know what precipitated it,
They're 18 to 22...how perfect were you at that age?

he was holding him
he was holding on to him.
it’s an offensive linemen’s trick. Offensive linemen will hold you, sit on you, lay on you, whatever they can to get you to spend your energy.
And if Suh doesn’t know that, he’s an idiot. That he can’t accept it – maybe he should grow up and stop being a fucking baby

Here's the video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDYiNGzWQKw&feature=player_embedded
Note that the ball is thrown…and everybody disengages except for Evan Deitrich-Smith, who bends Suh over backwards. Then Suh goes nuts in response, bashes Deitrich-Smith’s helmet into the turf, then stomps on his arm.

Second what Jon said above,
this stuff happens in the trenches. Yeah, in perfect world it doesn’t or gets called, but we don’t live in that world and Suh was completely in the wrong with his reaction.
I didn't catch the entire LSU Arkansas game.

Merry Christmas to you as well. However things play out tomorrow, best to you in the bowl game and in all things moving forward (except, of course, any/all matchups against Iowa). Really glad to have you in the conference, and look forward to seeing this build in the years to come.
Also, BHGP is meant for fun, not for serious. ness. Hate can really be hate without really being hate, if you know what I’m saying.
In any event, round 1 goes to you. Cheers, enjoy, and go get ’em in the Bowl game.
Thanks for the comments
Regarding BHGP, I think most of us are aware that things are a little less reserved over there. We don’t mind a bit of good natured teasing (the Nebraska has a Dilemma fanpost had me in stitches).
What most of us are not amused by is Vint’s “Here’s the thing” piece on Nebraska. I read through a few of his other posts for other games and nothing was in the same zip code of what he said about us. I certainly don’t expect him to sing Nebraska’s praises, but to launch into a baseless tirade against Nebraska’s fans and traditions, impugn the integrity of the program and the legitimacy of our national titles was a bush league cheap shot from a fan who’s clearly been engulfed by bitterness against Nebraska. That’s not having fun, that’s one man selfishly using the BHGP platform to vent against a program that’d played his team 6 times since World War II. Unfortunately, people like him damage the reputation of people like you. The fact that Vint is a manager at BHGP makes his conduct even more deplorable.
Anyway, I apologize for the tangent. I look forward to this series going forward, and you of course are welcome here to talk football at any time. Good luck in your bowl, I always make a habit of pulling for the conference teams (except last year, but that’s another story).

In all honesty
My only real issue with it is that he’s one of their site managers. If it was a comment or a fanpost, I’d have just shrugged (or more likely not even noticed it). It’s not good for the site’s credibility and reputation when you have a manager spitting out something that’s only distinguishable from the comments section by its lack of profanity.
