Team That Got Crushed by Michigan Post Game Thread

Photo

What was the score? 45-17. 52-8? Oh, hell, I don't know. I've forgotten already (NO I HAVEN'T)

What I know is this - if you ever thought that special teams doesn't play that big a role in a game, you can remember this one.

Hey! There is good news!

Michigan's groundskeepers will have to be working hard the rest of the weekend because there isn't a single place on the field that we didn't shit.

TAKE THAT MICHIGAN!

Yes, but

(1) Nebraska isn’t that good either
(2) Big XII defenses remain theoretical at best
     (a) Which is something new to Nebraska, because the problem with the B1G has been our offenses, not our defense.
          (i) That said, you’ll get healthy against the LOLful excuse for a defense we’re fielding.

This has to be coacing ...

We’ve looked dominant in one game this year (MSU) and we’ve squeaked by or been embarrassed in everything else.

I keep thinking back to Fresno St and just having a gut feeling that we weren’t ready. I still like Pelini, but it has to come back to him. We keep coming out looking like we don’t understand our opponent.

The guys look like they are thinking too much instead of just playing ….

One defense of Pelini and one scary thought

Defense of Pelini: The 2007 recruiting class are this teams Juniors and Seniors. They’d normally be the anchor of the team but that class got decimated when Callahan got the ax.

Scary thought: No Dennard or David back next year. Those two are the only thing keeping this defense in the “average” category.

You've got to hope that

1) our defensive line will get better…and they should because almost all of them are coming back.
2) Andrew Green figures things out, and I think he will because he has gotten a lot better as the year has gone on.
3) David Santos is good and Will Compton plays as good as he’s capable of

I think we’ll be better on defense next year actually. There are a lot of young guys out there, and you’ve got to believe that they’ll get better.

Rebuilding year. Lots of injuries.

I’m just saying that it sucks to be embarrassed like this, but if you look at the season as a whole there are plenty of reasons we should be 8-3 right now.

And the odds of us not getting to 9 wins again are still pretty long. We’ll be favored against Iowa and the bowl game is a 50/50 thing until further notice.

by HailVarsity on Nov 19, 2011 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

We are not young

Tons of experience on defense. And its not a super tough schedule, not by a long shot. Basically no top ten teams, no teams with a really good passing offense, no teams that are every close to OU and UT in talent.

And losing to Michigan isn’t that big of a deal, but getting blown out by a team that will probably lose by 3 TDs to whatever SEC team they play in the Cap One bowl is a problem.

That is to be expected

you’re basically playing a bowl game every week, without the related prep time. This is why a lot of us traditional B1Gers thought your bluster during the spring/summer was overwrought: it’s a whole new ball game. One that you will eventually be really good at, but are at an inherent disadvantage in right now.

Lesson #1- Wisconsin is extremely difficult to beat in a night game in Madison. If you make mistakes, you will lose.

Lesson #2- NEVER OVERLOOK NORTHWESTERN

Lesson #3- Michigan is back and will likely be our biggest challenge within our division every year.

What else will we learn?

If Pelini loses to Iowa I think his seat gets warm

But not hot. As I said, there are plenty of reasons that we should be 8-3 that aren’t really related to poor coaching (young team, new conference, all new opponents, super tough schedule, bad luck with injuries).

Next year those excuses won’t be valid, so if we don’t do any better then I think Bo Pelini’s seat will officially be hot.

What blows my mind is how bad the defense is this year. Pelini without a great defense is like lolcats with pictures of sad puppies.

Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

by Billgrip on Nov 19, 2011 2:47 PM CST reply actions

Yeah this is a crucial point in Pelini's coaching tenure

The first 3 years told us two things: Callahan was a good recruiter, and Pelini is a good defensive coach. Neither were exactly earth shattering.

This year (the first year that a LOT of Pelini’s players played) it’s obvious the horses aren’t there on defense. As I said earlier, he gets a bit of a pass because of the 07 class, but if Pelini can’t get the job done recruiting wise, it will be apparent the next couple of years and it will cost him his job.

I actually like our existing offense. I like some of the stuff that Tim Beck does.

Our offense didn’t really have a chance today. Too many special teams problems – I mean, when you can’t even get your offense the ball when the other team turns it over on downs or punt or kickoff, I mean, WTF do you do?

that, and define “Pro Style”.

Bo sees the problem he has in scheming against mobile QBs,

and hopes everyone else has the same dilemma.

And at times it has shown to be effective, though most pistol/shotgun teams have a QB that can still burn you consistently with the pass, which keeps the safeties back and lets the QB run wild with the extra blocker. Martinez is still developing that. …I hope.

by brutus1382 on Nov 19, 2011 3:14 PM CST up reply actions

Martinez

that type of qb is part of the problem its hard enough to play qb let alone qb and running back

Punctuation

would be amazing.

Some of the things I saw today were great. For instance that “Taylor hand off to Rexy then he pitched it for the TD” was excellent. Even if as they showed Hoke’s reaction, you could see him mouthing “WTF?”
This is a new system. It is a new conference. I doubted we would win them all this year, and I think the B1G is better than what everyone is giving them credit for.
We will see when we go bowling, eh?

Not the victory, but the action. Not the goal, but the game. In the deed, the glory.

When we got that 3 and out at the beginning of the 4th….then the ref gave them a first down when we knocked a blade of grass off their punter’s shoe.

by huskermic on Nov 19, 2011 3:24 PM CST via mobile reply actions

experience?

hmmm….

TMart has had more playing time. I mean, think about yourself, what you do. The first time you try something you suck, generally. (by “you” i mean everyone). You do it again and again, typically you get better, or at least more comfortable.

With the receivers, I think they’re just trying too hard to make plays. A lot are young. Bell, Turner, worried about trying to “do something”. You can’t coach experience, and you can’t coach “comfort”.

It would have been nice

to have gotten our backup qb some snaps at the end. We are screwed if Martinez gets lit up next week or in the bowl game. I mean our only real option would be running the wildcat offense the whole game with burkhead if martinez ever went down at this point. I don’t like how bo is handling some things with the program. I hope he starts getting some of these younger guys more reps in the future

Ok things are buzzing a bit now so tell me to shut up if I'm being idiotic

But this just occurred to me: We used mistakes to build big leads on both Washington and Penn State and both teams rallied like madmen and made us fight like crazy to hold those wins.

Similar things happened to us against Wisconsin and Michigan where a several bad calls and bad mistakes put us in a hole…..and we laid down and died both times.

One of the things Pelini earned praise for in his first 3 years was the defiance he instilled in his teams. That’s missing in a huge way this year.

by jdhusker on Nov 19, 2011 3:40 PM CST reply actions

I think it's a little bit of everything.

Young players. Bad execution. Injuries (how many times did burkhead touch the ball?) Bad calls. When was the last time we played infront of 100,000+? Especially 2 weeks in a row. Blown coverage in the secondary.

I mean. Nothing went right for us. Not. One. Single. Fucking. Thing.

What that personally pissed me off this entire season has been that we have had 65498416315654 missed opportunities at interceptions. Every single game, anywhere between 1 – 3 passes from the other team lands in the hands of our DBs, and we can never come up with them.

Can the hick brothers

Seriously? That should be rephrased to “Is there anyone out there who is not a better coach than Bo?” Bo Pelini is a total a$$ and an embarassment to the university. I can only name 2-3 other coaches that routinely have sideline meltdowns, poke fingers in the chests of their players while berating them and scream the F-bomb at officials the entire game while on national TV. I have NEVER seen a more arrogant, self-righteous coach at press conferences – his stare downs and how dare you question my judgment attitude are unbelievable. When are Nebraska fans going to get tired of the same old excuses after every loss and hold him and his staff accountable?; “We just didn’t execute”, “We made way to many mistakes”, “We turned the ball over too many times”, “We were not ready to play today” ad nauseum. DUH? Don’t you and your hick high school coach brother get it? It’s your job to make SURE the team is ready to play and give it their best effort. All the Callahan era recruits are gone and the team you have now is all on Pelini. A few quality players but for the most part mediocre players that get torn up whenever they play a good team. If OSU’s QB had not gotten hurt in the second half there’s no way NU wins that game. If Penn State had any kind of offense at all there is another loss. Corn Niblet fans should fall on their knees and count their blessings they have as good a record as they have – no thanks to the hick brothers.

Personally

I’m a huge fan of edible pets. They don’t live forever anyway and why not get some good meals out of them? Not saying that we should all start eating our cats and dogs, but there is nothing wrong with raising pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, etc. as “pets” for meals. Especially with kids, teaches them responsibility and shows why its good to not be a picky eater. Way cheaper at the grocery store too!

Ok, bowl picture

If Michigan goes 10-2 and goes to the BCS it’s actually not that bleak (if we beat Iowa). Hell we might go to the Capital One Bowl over a 10-3 Sparty. Otherwise, the Outback Bowl looks pretty good.

I’d say rooting interest next week:

Michigan over Ohio State
Northwestern over Sparty
Wisconsin over PSU
NU over Iowa

Not the victory, but the action. Not the goal, but the game. In the deed, the glory.

I just don't get it

Can Bo and Carl get some points from opposing defensive coordinators on how to stop a mobile QB? Seriously, everyone has obviously figured out how to stop our mobile QB, yet we never figure out how to stop anyone else’s. I’m so tired of that. I know it’s not easy to contain a mobile QB, but you can’t use that as an excuse to not do it at all.

Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

yeah well be BETTER get it figured out before next season

Or else we are looking at the same results. Next year we face Denard Robinson again, as well as a matured Braxton Miller, Rob Bolden, and KAIN COLTER. I might be missing a few too.

We may be 8-3

But this game, with the level of incompetence and lack of discipline in all facets of the game, reminded me of a Callahan-era team, sans all the dropped balls.

Call me a pessimist, but what-in-the-fuck was that shit-show we saw today? There is no excuse for falling apart like that.

Sorry, this is my first post of the day, had to visit the gym to work off some steam, and I’m sure this has been covered.

Shit show is right

Made me think. who would you say is the leader of this team? I can’t think of a single player how acts like a leader. Dennard and David play like leaders but you don’t see much leadership outside of their plays.

Leaders on the field

Well you certainly don’t see leadership from NU’s QB. He folds like a cheap suit whenever he knows he is going to be hit. Was fun to watch him get clocked really good a couple of times in the 4th quarter. Go Hawkeyes!

But the Coen Brothers said their movie was nothin’ like the old one. Took nothin’ from it.

I’d say – different times. In John Wayne’s day, people like their death dressed up a bit. Now it’s just stark, naked death. Kim Darby – oh I was taken by her in this movie. I was seven at the time, thought she was so pretty.

Offenses are flashier and more creative. Defenses are less good. More points. Then again I’m kind of new school in my football tastes.

Congratulations to Delano, Wilberger and Root. Thanks for what you gave to NU volleyball.

Well, a friend and I watched a comedy show for about three hours at his place, and then we watched some shows on Hulu, interspersed with some Ohio - Penn. He doesn't have cable and his ESPN 3 crapped out on the xbox.

Then I came home and watched Apollo 13 and then a short jaunt into lab. (It’s lovely out here in Madison.)

I finally felt like I could read things online without getting overly annoyed by people dumping on the Cornhuskers.

Why couldn't Alabama have lost to Georgia Southern?

I mean, Awburn has no chance, not with Chiznik running the show and no CAMNEWTON.

i can tell you right now

watching these games why there shouldn’t be a playoff.

you look at Lake Kiffin, all bundled up. and then remember Brady Hoke in short sleeves, and Bo Pelini with basically a jacket on.

and you want a playoff? not unless it’s home field advantage and that’s it. IT"S ALL ABOUT LOGISTICS

Actually I digress

Our defense was built to stop the offenses in the Big 12. Hopefully in a year or two we’ll be able to stop most offenses in the Big 10. But we absolutely need to figure out how to stop mobie QB’s because we’ve got 3 more years of Braxton Miller, two years of Rob Bolden, and another year of Dennard Robinson.

Miller will rotate off our schedule after next year, so unless Ohio State wins the Leaders.

What’s that? Urban Meyer is going to OSU? Wilson’s eligibility is expiring at Wisconsin? Penn State will have a brand new coaching staff?

Okay, yes, we might have to gameplan for Miller.

Pelin will always be a good team coach not great.

Lets face it guys and gals Pelini will always have us at a good team but not great. 8 to 9 win seasons are good 10 wins every once in a while. Great teams only lose to other great teams but not by much hint lsu and alambama. Good teams loose to other good teams and some times get crushed by other good teams and bad teams. M is not a great team but they are a good team, 50/50 we do the same thing to them they did to us thats what good teams do to each other. Hoke will never have them at great because he’s running a richrod o because his players couldnt understand his o and m fans know it. Nebraska can be great just not under a great coach but not a great head coach.

Nah

Young team all across the board with lots of injuries and the toughest schedule in the Big 10. Not to mention the fact that we are facing all new opponents. Being 8-3 is about what most objective fans expected at this point in the season before the season started. We lose site of the big picture after tough losses sometimes. Overall this is a transition year…transition into a new league, and lots of young guys as we transition from Callahan to Pelini players.

I think Pelini needs a couple years in the Big 10 before we can judge him completely as a coach who can’t win big. Remember, Nebraska is his first head-coaching gig. He’s still learning! I know some other young coaches have had instant success, but that shouldn’t be expected. He’s still going to learn and figure things out. For instance, notice how much more calm he is on the sidelines this year? That’s a prime example of him learning and adapting. He’s no longer embarrassing the university with his sideline behavior. He’s no dummy, and at the end of this year he will look back and try to figure out ways to avoid these epic meltdowns we’ve had against Michigan, NW, and Wisconsin.

For now, let’s be happy with the fact that we have been ranked for two and half straight seasons and we are no longer a completely mediocre team like we were under Callahan. Pelini is still a far better coach. Today was just the kind of game where nothing went our way…and Michigan made us pay for our mistakes. It happens sometimes. Next week we will probably beat Iowa and still get a good bowl game.

Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

I don't agree with you.

Keep in mind that we’re in a new league, facing 11 new opponents. Of those, 8 of those opponents play a brand of football we have not had to deal with over the last decade. This team is showing the pains of a team playing an independent’s schedule. Look at ND or Navy, season to season. Preparing to play 11 new opponents is a tall order, no matter who you are.

Keep in mind, that we have new coaches on staff. We have a new OC, a new recievers coach, a new running backs coach (former tight ends coach), a new o-line and tight ends coach, a new secondary coach, and a new d-line coach (paunchis is now coaching the full line). That’s a lot of new positions.

We also have a young team, again facing all of the above. If there is any valid criticism of Pelini, it’s that his defense appears too difficult for young players to pick up.

We continue to judge this team by our preseason expectations, expectations which were admittedly too high and perpetuated by a (now deemed foolish and incorrect) assumption that Nebraska’s speed would be a benefit in the “Slow” Big Ten.

I refuse to discredit our effort in this season. Pulling out nine wins against the schedule given to us by Delany and crew is a fine performance. Not great, not preferred, but a good start for play in the Big Ten.

We didn’t come in and flop, and if you expected us to dominate, well, that’s just what the media has sold this league as.

Next year this team will be better. I guarantee it.

Lol, don't worry

We were responding rationally to a drunken rant. So really it was just a waste of time.

But it’s always therapeutic to reason as to why it’s okay that we are 8-3 (though I still hate losing big like we did today…)

Agreement. Keeping perspective is key.

Otherwise, you start thinking Iowa is a pretty good state and that’s just not appropriate.

Alabama has to be so pumped

They’re basically guaranteed to get into the NCG now. They’ll roll Auburn to finish 11-1. Who’s going to jump them after this?

Another silver lining

We DEFINITELY picked the right week to face plant. Had we picked a boring week to do it, there’d be wall to wall coverage of our game. This week it’s barely a blip on ESPN’s radar.

Back to the depressing subject of Nebraska football

Part of me wonders how the team will respond now that we aren’t competing for a championship. For the past two seasons, that’s all it’s been about because we were the best team in the Big 12 north. I feel like Pelini motivates his team with the idea of winning championships.

Now that that goal is lost for the season…what do they play for now? What does anyone not in contention for a championship play for? The fact that I’m asking that question shows that Pelini is a good coach and it’s been so long since we weren’t in contention that I don’t remember what it’s like. That’s a good thing!

Greetings and salutations, good sirs

I have been occupied throughout the day today exchanging theories and hypotheses with my esteemed colleagues at a conference.

I understand there was a foot-ball game played today by our favorite squad. How did the hometown gridders fare? Did they bring honor to Dear Old Nebraska U?

by Cheeseandcorn on Nov 19, 2011 11:30 PM CST reply actions

YOU HAD NOT HEARD. Please, take this chair.

Our team was drugged by those most heinous of evils, the Iowa Hawkeyes. In their intoxicated state, they simply could not match their esteemed opponents of Ann Arbor, those Michigan Men. They appeared to have brought much shame upon Dear Old Nebraska U.

But FEAR NOT. We have declared war on those evil and sneaky Hawkeyes and shall destroy them shortly, with no mercy.

THEY SHALL KNOW OUR FURY.

Pelini

Anyone else think that Bo’s job is on the line? I know that when Osborne first took over her was under fire for “never winning the big game”. Bo not only can’t win the “big games” he can even win the games in which we are the heavy favorite and get us to a major bowl. We are, bar none, the most inconsistent team in the Big 10 this season. What a terrible way to kick off our first season in this league.

What Martinez needs is a coach that will be able to bring him along and coach him. Yelling only gets so far. This exceptional athlete needs guidance and encouragement.

Oh…our offensive coordinator only giving Burkhead the ball ten times?!?! Brilliant. MSU could not stop him but we give him ten carries the entire game…brilliant!
