Friday Night Open Thread -

Tonight it's Oklahoma State vs Iowa State at 7:00 PM on ESPN.

It's a sad day for the Oklahoma State community as women's basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant coach Miranda Serna were killed in a light plane crash in Arkansas earlier today. Also killed were the pilot and his wife.

Our thought and prayers go out to the victims' families.

I have to ask

Why is ESPN treating PSU-OSU like a bigger game than Nebraska-Michigan? Is it purely that scandal has tarred both programs and they think it makes for interesting television? OSU-PSU, barring Wisky getting Zook’d, has absolutely zero impact on the Leaders race, we know PSU is getting tanked in the bowl selection already, and we know Fickell is getting canned already. Is there a game between two bowl eligible teams that could be more meaningless?

Gotta love em’ with Paul Rhodes as coach. You can never count them out. They can beat anyone on any given day. Now Iowa definitely doesn’t look as bad for losing to them.

If they do, it'll be ridiculous.

Ball directly over the upright ≠ made field goal. If the ball had taken the exact same trajectory only a few feet lower, it would have clonked off the upright and been no good.

3 End the season in the SAME YEAR
4 Four team playoff of top teams for champ

I like the proposal, if the BCS isn't going away.

It takes their hands out of the rest of the bowl games, meaning we should have competitive games again.

If we can’t have the People’s Playoff, at least we won’t have to watch unranked teams playing a Top 10 Oklahoma.

Why the hell dont,,,

they take the winners of each conference, pair them up in a bracket, and work their way down to the final two? It works for basketball? Would only have to play 2 or maybe 4 extra games!

We already play 2 additional games (conf champ and bowl game)

A 4 team playoff would be the same. Trash the conf champ game. And play a semi game and then a champ game. Still just 2 additional games.

There are many more non-SEC teams than SEC teams.

Also the bowls wouldn't make any money.

Look where the bowl games are located. Bowl games are as much for the fans and the tourist revenue as the teams themselves.

I think we need a playoff system as well

But it should only be the top 4 IMO. That would cover all the undefeated teams from major conferences most years except maybe some freak year where all the major conferences have undefeated conference champs. But that’s unlikely at best.

They could play the semi-final round sometime around December 20th to kick off bowl season. Then all the rest of the bowl games could be played and the championship could be played at the end of all of them, around January 10th as always.

Think about it, the rest of the bowl games sandwiched between the semi-final round of the playoff and the final. I think it would be pretty neat.

by Salt Creek and Stadium on Nov 18, 2011 11:41 PM CST up reply actions

I do not follow

The main reason I oppose a true playoff is because our current system (and really any system that doesn’t involve a playoff) maintains the importance of regular season games. National title contenders have to bring it each and every week.

Introduce a playoff, and we’d have 3 loss teams in contention. Look at any league in any sport with a playoff: the only games anyone cares about (aside from the extreme diehards) are the playoffs. The extreme example is the NBA where alot of people are actually happy the regular season is being shortened/cancelled so we don’t have to deal with that trash flooding our tv’s after church on Sundays.

Exactly. LSU still has to win out to be the National Champion, under our system.

Well yes

I’m not literally saying “cancel the game” but I think it’d be utter bullshit if either Bama or Oregon got a second crack at them. And after that, the contenders have such a weak resume its hard to make a case for them.

Because some conferences might have more than one contender

While others might have no contender. Look at the B1G this year…the winner will have 2 losses at best. That would taint the playoff.
