The Day Has Come! - Early Games Open Thread

Woohoo!!! Had a helluva time on the town last night, and we're getting ready to do it again!

Welcome to Week 5 of the 2011 College Football Season! Consider this your early game open thread. The Nebraska vs Washington game thread will open at 2:00 pm.

If you're new, in order to post, you need to create an account by clicking on the 'Sign Up" button at the upper left. All you need is an email address. Here's an explanation of how to use the web site, including how to use some Hot Keys to more easily navigate the comment system.

Once you join Corn Nation, you're free to join any other SB Nation blog with the same account. SB Nation has around 220 sports sites, so that's a whole lot of access through one account. If you need more incentive, accounts are free!!

Your early game schedule is after the jump. The entire day's college football TV listings can be found here. Orson has put out his rootability index and somehow picks Wisconsin....

I wanted to put up some photos I took last night, but unfortunately I left the USB cable at home. Ah... well....

The Game Thread will start up at 6:30 pm.

okay

I thought I’d set up the game threads last night, but I forgot.

If you’re in Madison, I’m looking for a suggestion of a place we can meet on State Street. Having never been here before, I have not a clue as to where I’m going.

Good luck Husker fans !

Welcome to B1G football and it should be a dandy of a game. I’ll be at the Purdue-ND massacre game, and TIVOing your game. While I think Wisky is the sleeper National Championship team this year, I wouldn’t be stunned to see the Badgers sputter a bit against you.

It's a tough time for Boilermaker football fans.

I'm working as an RA to help offset the costs of professional school.

Us Optometry students keep to ourselves and spend the better part of our days studying, but today apparently happens to be the campus’ “Family Fun Day”, and they’ve enlisted the help of all RAs on campus in spite of the fact that none of my residents are attending this thing. I have to help set up for a magician/comedian from 2:00-3:30, which I don’t really mind too much.

What sucks is that everybody is required to help set up for the last event of the night, which is a special screening of “The Zookeeper” at 8:00 PM.

I’m going to feign illness or sneak out of that last one, because there’s no way in hell I’m missing this game.

Northwestern's version of Wisconsin's fight song...

As some of you may know, the Northwestern University Marching Band
has a tradition of periodically rewriting the lyrics to school fight
songs. (I don’t know if they’ve done Nebraska’s yet. If not, surely
that will happen this season.)

Anyway, here’s their current revised lyrics to On Wisconsin:

Aw, Wisconsin
Poor Wisconsin
Party School of Shame
You would enjoy academics
But you lack the brains (Lets! Go! Drink!)
Aw, Wisconsin
Poor Wisconsin
Drink yourselves insane
Drink, for your badgers will get trashed this game

When A&M beats

Arkansas I guess they won’t have much to say. Except, “Well, they’re going to be a SEC team.” I absolutely HATE the media’s love affair with the SEC.

by HuskerINtheArmy on Oct 1, 2011 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

But it's understandable

No matter how many different ways you look at it…the SEC has won the past 6 national championships in a row. That’s just a fact, whether we like it or not. Until they don’t win the national championship, there’s really no strong argument against the SEC being the best football conference.

Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

by Billgrip on Oct 1, 2011 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

The media

perpetuates the SEC’s return to those games by boasting about them and ranking them highly because of their in conference games. It’s not the NFL, players are there for four years. That’s it. Things change.

They beat each other in a low scoring games and they’re great? Bull. I’d put the best B1G team or B12 team against the best SEC team any day.

by HuskerINtheArmy on Oct 1, 2011 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes...but

For the past 6 years the best of the Big 12, Big 10, and Pac 10 have met an SEC team in the national championship and lost. 6 years in a row…I’m not an SEC homer by any means, and I don’t like it either…but it is what it is.

Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

by Billgrip on Oct 1, 2011 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Texas

had 4 or 5 plays with their Heisman contender QB, then had to have a True-freshman come in and STILL almost pulled it out. Pac-10 I won’t defend. 2007 was a 2 loss (!!!!) LSU team (WTF?!). The media makes it happen.

They’ve only won the past 5, Texas won in ’05.

by HuskerINtheArmy on Oct 1, 2011 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Ah don't know why I thought it was 6

Lol I think I heard 6 on ESPN…which is funny because it goes right along with what you’re saying about the media over-blowing it. The 2 loss LSU team wouldn’t have made it in any other season under any other circumstances.

Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

by Billgrip on Oct 1, 2011 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

That is funny

because I heard it on ESPN also. It made me count on my fingers and remember the previous champs.. lol

by HuskerINtheArmy on Oct 1, 2011 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Case in point

LSU gets a bump to #2 after beating a poor (but ranked because they’re SEC) MissSt team..

I’d be willing to bet that even though they struggled early against Kentucky they come out of the weekend with more first place votes than last week.

by HuskerINtheArmy on Oct 1, 2011 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

2007 finish was just crazy

A lot of things had to fall into place for 2 loss LSU to make it. That season started with Michigan losing to Appalachian State and just got crazier from there. That was the season where the #2 ranked team lost like 6 weeks in a row. Missouri beat KU right at the end, otherwise KU would have made it…then Missouri was ranked #1 for a week and got embarassed by OU in the Big 12 championship…then West Virginia was #2 and got upset by an unranked Pitt team. That was just the craziest finish I think college football could have ever had.

That was also the year that we went 5-7, so a lot of Husker fans were more worried about whether we’d make a bowl game or Callahan would keep his job than what was going on elsewhere.

by Billgrip on Oct 1, 2011 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Anyways

All that to say that there were a lot of other factors at work to put a 2-loss LSU team in the national title besides them being in the SEC.

Look me up on youtube sometime...if you're really bored.

I'd say

that Minnesota has a lot on their plate right now with their coach’s health, the difference in talent, QB problems, and lack of a defense.

Ohio State fans are funny

I’m reading some comments from OSU fans on an ESPN game thread and there’s comments like “Fire Fickel” and “We’re going be 7-5 at best this year!” and “There’s no way that thing Braxton Miller can beat UM” (note that their record is 3-1, they are only losing 7-0 to a good Michigan State team, and four of their starters are still suspended but come back next year)

Oh how fans can overreact.

Scroll down to the first video. T.O. was the guest of honor at UW Athl. Dept. luncheon yesterday. Tom “dishes the dirt,” so to speak, on Barry Alvarez’s athletic ability (or lack thereof) when he played linebacker at Nebraska. Funny stuff.
