Unfortunately for Ryan, he never got the opportunity. Nor, as it turns out, did Pelini ever intend to honor his commitment.
"It was a joke, ma'am," the sour head coach barked at me in his Holiday Bowl postgame news conference.
A joke?

Booo freaking hooo...
I think any person with half a brain and the slightest amount of social tact would know that it was the type of promise that is made under the assumption that the Husker would have a comfortable lead.
Just like when your mommy and daddy promise you a car when you’re 16, but when tough times hit, you don’t get your car.
Just another sensationalized opportunity by the media to bash Pelini.
"It was a gut wrenching moment to watch..."
Created personally by the reporter. What balls, to go smash the kids ideals and then report on how he took it.
I can see her next article now: “I told my children I never loved them, and it was gut wrenching to see their reaction.”

I'm more appalled by the attempt of the writer
By the fact they are trying to present themselves by being pro-military. It’s simply nothing more than some dumbass writier wanting to show the world how bad of a person Pelini is by saying he stomped all over a Navy man’s dream. This seems to be more of a hate piece under the guise of military support just to bash Pelini and Nebraska. This writer should be ashamed of themselves by using the military like this to push their own agenda. They are just as much at fault writing this story as Pelini is for his so called joke. What Pelini did was wrong, I do not defend that fact, but if Nebraska had been up by twenty, like they should have been, I would bet my life that Pelini would have honored it.
Just shameful and hate article from anti-Nebraska writer in my opinion.

“Coach Bo made the same joke last year at the game. In no way did he have malicious/deceiving intent”

Gosh, a reporter that didn’t do her research…
“At the press conference she asked the question to Bo like he was “nuts” for letting a sailor call a play. Now she writes this?"

Can this season die already?
More drama up from the grave of this 2010 season…I just want it to be over!
Comment
It would have been cool for her to try and get a comment from Pelini after the fact, rather than just right after his team played their worst game of the year. But then again, doing that might have ruined the chance for a story.
Beliefs reaffirmed after reading this "story."
1. Underpromise and overperform is the preferred method of operation (as in, let the guy stand on the sideline and let him CHOOSE one of several plays if you’re comfortably up in the 4th quarter).
2. Some journalists are far more dedicated to creating stories than reporting them.
"Wer viel Bier trinkt, schläft gut. Wer gut schläft, sündigt nicht. Und wer nicht sündigt, kommt in den Himmel!" Martin Luther
You know what was a joke?
That story.
As a former journalist, I’m usually inclined to take the reporter’s side over the coach’s, but that was just indefensible. What a steaming load of hackery.
It's bad PR for sure, but easily fixed.
This isn’t like Lou Holtz disavowing the existence of Damien Peter after his crippling injury, as it’s being sensationalized. The guy was just happy to be a part of the game in the first place.
What (Fair and Balanced) Garbage
Imagine how Pelini responded to an incredibly obvious trap question like “Tell me why you broke the promise you made to one of our honored military personnel?” after that nationally televised embarrassing bowl performance. She managed to ambush him in the best O’Reilly/Fox fashion at the worst possible time.
Then think about how this crap-monger made sure to get right in front of the kid so she could gleefully record in detail how devastated he was by her manufactured ‘revelation’ that it was all a nasty joke that soul-less bastard Pelini maliciously played on him. And then this caring, deeply offended ‘reporter’ broadcasts it nationally ensuring maximum embarrassment for the poor dumb trusting hayseed who was so thoroughly ‘punked’ (to use her term).

I don’t know what happened, but this is a PR nightmare.
Bo has got to start handling the media better. I think he’s gotten a more than fair deal from them up to this point, and he’s treated them poorly, or at least hasn’t used them effectively. And now the media has started to come after him a bit.
Seriously look at this article:
Weis grants little boy’s dying wish
Plus it’s not like letting the guy call a play would have been any worse than what was being called that game.
You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool.

I agree with you in general
But this really isn’t even Bo’s fault at all. It seems everyone there except the guy and the reporter took it as a joke, and Bo had no idea that anybody had actually taken it seriously until after the game.
Then he answered sharply when a reporter asked a stupid, antagonistic, irrelevant question after a terrible game. Every other coach in America would have, too.(And according to at least one other reporter who was there, her characterization of him “barking” at her was flat wrong.)
Other Husker reporters who usually would be expected to defend their colleague have ripped Horne apart on Twitter today.
This may be a PR nightmare, but the blame falls on Horne, not Bo.

Does it matter
where the blame falls, and isn’t that kind of the problem with media in general these days?
At least the athletic department could have commented or issued a statement to head some of this off – isn’t that what PR is for?
Or is it just a slow news day and I should stop my complaining? :)

On a happier note,
Taylor Martinez has issued a statement to ESPN that he IS staying at Nebraska.
Now, can we leave the kid alone for a few months?
I'll make the same comment I did on corrnation facebook.
Even though I believe this, Martinez still needs to come out himself and say it. It still doesn’t look good talking through someone else, let alone your dad. Good news none the less.

I've changed my stance on the whole PR issue but it comes with a condition...
Screw the national press, heck, screw the local press, just win games.
Why pander to a group of which you have absolutely no control over, a group which has made it their full-time job to sensationalize your wacky, stroke-like facial expressions and portray you as college football’s Bobby Knight?
Just win games and f*@k the rest.
Pelini. A man of character?
I have begun to lose respect for Pelini. You add this last bit of untruth to the conversations that he had with Martinez , according to the dad, and you start to see a pattern of lies that appear to be cover ups. No one really knows the truth about the Miami interview? Pelini’s problem is that he won’t come out and speak opening and honestly about anything! Everything is wordspeak with him.
