Wats and Pelini were talking about in the offseason. As good as Lee was in the Holiday Bowl, he’s just not a natural running qb. I’m sad for him, since he put up with a lot of shit last year without complaining even once.

Terribly inconsistant on both sides.
We have the best 3rd string qb in the nation.

It’s comforting to know that our season won’t be blown up by a qb injury. And I think our defense looked A LOT better after WKU’s td. Almost like they needed to be woke up. That said, they’re not last year’s defense, and we are going to have to put up some points this year.

How much influence of Lee being 3rd string was from the possibility of Green transfering if he had been 3rd string? Not saying Green didn’t have a game worthy of being the backup but Lee isn’t going anywhere. Green could go a number of places and get pt.

He looked great running, and the passes he completed were bullets. But I think he only threw a couple of long balls and they looked off. I still think Zac Lee has the best deep ball of the bunch.
D-line needs to figure things out before K-State & Oklahoma State
WKU’s RB (Rainey) was pretty good but did you guys see how Daniel Thomas and Kendall Hunter performed today? They bothed rushed for about a billion yards and 700 touchdowns today. I mean if the starting RB from a team that went 0-11 last year puts up about 150 yards rushing on us…what do you think Daniel Thomas and Kendall Hunter will do? The lack of Suh on our D-line was pretty obvious in my opinion. And our linebacker injuries may hurt us more than we’re willing to admit. Sorry for being such a Debbie Downer. =[
I'm not worried about the d-line.
Only the first game and I have faith in the coaches to shore that up. The LBs though are thin and showed weakness when focus wasn’t needed because of decent sized lead.

But like Bill, I was pretty disappointed by the defense, too. A very lackluster showing in the second half, and most of the problems throughout the game seemed to stem from a lack of penetration by the D-line.
The Pelinis will be getting after them something fierce next week.

I'm sure we will see significant improvement
But to me, this confirms that this defense has a ceiling of “very good” or “excellent” but probably not insanely out of this world like last years.
Of course, I doubt they’ll have to hold everyone under 20 points this year.

Along the way the weaknesses and flaws stand out; this gives the coaches an idea of where they need to spend time with the kids. All in all, I thought things went descent. From the radio you can’t see much, but they did seem to tire and lose concentrations at times.

But UNC is rallying. They’ve cut the deficit down to 30-17 and are threatening again. Only about 2:30 left so it probably won’t be enough, but it’s probably not a great sign for LSU that a team so debilitated by suspensions is making them sweat this late in the game.

I’m sold. I was happy with all three QB play. Their timing was a little off on some plays, but I expect that early in the season. It would have been since to see more of Lee. Right now I would feel comfortable with any of the three starting.
I was impressed with WKU, not the strongest team of course, but they had some tough players. That QB never gave up, even after he was Cricked. They will break their losing streak (I haven’t looked at their schedule) this year.

I didn't see the game...
…but WKU only hung 10 points on NU…so I don’t see the embarrassment there. I think he could have phrased the noticeable weaknesses more positively. That’s been my only complaint with him as a coach. He has little to no people/social skills when it comes to handling the press. I think he watched Bobby Knight and Woody Hayes when he was growing up in Ohio.

Just some thoughts.
After watching the first game, it would seem that the loss of Compton and Fisher may hurt us in the long run this year. The defensive line showed that it misses Suh. By mid-3rd quarter, WKU’s offensive line was pushing our line downfield five yards at a time. Our run defense will probably hurt a little this year if our depth at linebacker gets any worse. That could make KSU and ISU difficult games.
Offense showed that it has potential, but will hold judgment until after the Washington game.
Hated to see Kansas lose like they did today.
