The Greatest 17-3 Win in Nebraska History
You read right. The Nebraska Cornhuskers 17-3 victory over the dreaded South Dakota State Jack Rabbits may just serve as the greatest 17-3 victory in the entire programs history. Why you ask?
Simply put...it may have woken a sleeping giant. Nebraska was fresh off a pummeling of the Washington Huskies in Seattle, Wa. The nation had finally taken note of what was quite possibly the sketchiest of the preseason Top 10 teams, embracing them as a National Title darkhorse now. Then it came.
The almighy Jack Rabbits went into Memorial Stadium on Homecoming nonetheless and only lost by 14 points. The Huskers, for the first time this season, looked vulnerable. Now you may think I'm crazy, but I honestly believe this was the best thing that could've happened on Saturday. Kansas State was already the scariest game on the schedule in my opinion. It had the smell of the biggest trap game in history to me. Going on the road for only the second time all season into a hostile environment on a Thursday night, playing a team the literally rests its season on beating Nebraska. Bill Snyder will have his kids jacked up for this one because honestly it could determine the Big 12 North. Had Nebraska beat SDSU in a rout, I would have felt very uncomfortable heading into Manahattan. Call me crazy, but I honestly feel much safer now. Bo Pelini has his team feeling as if they havn't earned anything (which is true), a feeling they definitely wouldn't have felt had they scored 50 points again.
Prior to this uninspired win, I would've given us a 3 point edge heading into next Thursday. Now you ask? I think we win this game by at least a touchdown and possibly two or more. If you think Bo won't have this team focused you'd be crazy. The fact he has this verbal ammunition for the next two weeks will have the Huskers geared on the Wildcats and dreaming of Daniel Thomas' face, while other teams have nightmares of him. The Blackshirts will be very, very stout next Thursday....I honestly believe that. Anytime you give Bo and Carl two weeks to prepare a defense, it usually turns out pretty well, especially considering K States offense leaves a lot to be desired outside the run game.
So basically, what I'm saying is this 17-3 'defeat' that Big Red Nation is up in arms about needs to be embraced rather than bashed. This awoke our beloved Huskers and will carry us through what was the ultimate trap game, on to Texas and a memorable season. This could end up being the greatest 17-3 win our our tradition-rich programs history! (More so than Bo's first head coaching job in the Alamo Bowl against Michigan State)

I agree
It was a good “win” for the reasons you mentioned. I think that the Huskers we see on Thursday the 7th are going to be a team that looks even better than what we’ve seen the first 4 games. Especially the last game.
I Think There Is Some Truth To That
Every year the fanbase goes hyperbolic when the Huskers beat up the non conference patsies. Then we encounter a “real” team and usually get handed a loss. Everyone retrenches, and things proceed at a more rational, and usually winning pace.
Lets hope that thanks to the great effort of the SDSU players and coaches we really did get an easy wake up call that can be used to move the team forward with a more sustainable attitude.
BTW, have not heard much about “swagger” lately!

I hope you're right.
I still don’t feel much better about KSU, though. Yeah, it’s better Nebraska doesn’t go into Manhattan feeling too good about themselves, but they have to be able to respond if they get punched in the mouth. They got punched again and again against SDSU and just took it. They didn’t get angry, they didn’t adjust, they didn’t blow people off the ball or anything.
SDSU showed teams like KSU how to beat Nebraska: make Martinez pass, play keep-away and keep pounding them up the middle. Nebraska HAS to dictate the pace of this game, or they could be in trouble. Also, Snyder has outcoached Pelini before, and he’ll use every trick in the book to get this win.
Also, what “verbal ammuntion” are you referring to?
What has K-State shown you to think Nebraska will be “in trouble?”
If Nebraska wants to stop the run, they will stop the run. K-State’s defense hasn’t shown me anything that has me convinced they can stop Nebraska.

Nebraska can't stop the run
or have you already erased these guys:
Bobby Rainey
Deonte Jackson
Kyle Minett
from your revisionist memory?
it's not a matter
of “can’t” – it’s that we didn’t.
Husker coaches already know the key to stopping the run, and that’s to use more than a single linebacker on defense.
It may come to pass (ha! pun!) that we have difficulty stopping the pass and the run (i.e. Okie State), but Kansas State hasn’t shown that they have much of a pass threat.
So… gee, gosh, whiz, we’ve given up some rushing yardage – others have noticed. Now, what’s KSU going to do to beat us? Line up Daniel Thomas and run him 40 times? I don’t think so.

I'm a Nebraska fan--
I live with the perpetual fear of having the rug pulled out from under me.
But seriously, Nebraska’s best strategy is to do what they did at Washington: strike early and strike quick. This forces KSU to play keep-up, and that plays right into our defense’s strengths. But if Nebraska can’t do that, and KSU slows things down to their pace, it’s anyone’s game.
Originally, I wasn’t scared of KSU’s defense. But last Saturday, a team that had no business being on the same field as Nebraska flew around and made our offense look foolish. I know they could shape up and come out firing, but it’s hard to wipe that image of Helu getting plowed in our own backfield out of my mind.
Like I said before...
K State scared me before….but it wasn’t because of the personnel they were putting on the field. We know who Daniel Thomas is and our gameplan does not change. My point is that this “close” game with SDSU woke us up. We may have walked into this game a little too confident. You don’t think it means something for Bo to question their manhood for two straight weeks? You don’t think Bo has made it a point to these guys to stuff the run after being embarassed by three no-name running backs this year. This is Bo’s chance to let the nation know that the Blackshirts aren’t soft, and I trust him enough with two weeks to prepare to absolutely stuff Thomas time and time again. Maybe it’s the koolaid but I’ve seen Bo regroup this bunch multiple times….it’s what makes him Bo and what makes HIS football team something to deal with following one of these games.
Steve Sipple wrote a great article today in the Journal-Star
about the Pelini defensive philosophy and how it works. As I reflect on the year thus far, I think we’re going to be just fine as the season rolls along. Getting Will Compton back would be tremendously helpful, as will continued growth and experience from Whaley, David and Martin. Considering that only two teams have scored more than 20 points on us the last two years, I’m not terribly worried about the defense. They did, after all, hold SDSU to 3 points, all those yards by MInnett notwithstanding.
Seriously, check out the article – it’ll let you see a bit more of what Bo & Carl are after, and why they are quickly becoming some of the most respected defensive minds in CFB. Frankly, I’m worried we’ll lose Carl at the end of the season – somebody’s going to make him a head coach sooner or later.

This
is crazy. This was not a good “win”. It was ugly I was there. They played uninspired football from start to finish. A couple of flags thrown against the rabbits may have prevented one of the biggest upsets of all time. Terrible Terrible Terrible game. I am not saying they can’t get better or haven’t been better this year. But if they play like that again any game this season they will lose by 3 maybe 4 touchdowns and would deserve it. Buttering up a 17-3 win of the Jackrabbits is just wrong!!!!!
That's the point.
He’s not trying to say they played a good game. He’s just sayhing that he believes that a pathetic showing like that will get the team fired up and reasdy to play from here on out.
Key words = He believes
That’s what 100% of this site and others like it are about. It’s all just what one person believes. It coud turn out to be true, and it could turn out to be a toal load of dogshit. Does anyone know? Not until the season is over. In fact this post was probably something that could’ve waited until after the season, IF in fact Nebraska gets motivated because of it.
I think the “trap” label has been over-used in today’s media and fandom. Seriously, do you think K-State is being glazed over by the Pelini’s? I think not. “Trap” games are a figment of the fans anxiety in most cases…
Agree 100%
I’ve never been so upset with a win as I was Saturday night. That being said, the fact that we played that poorly and still won the game is huge. Clearly the co-called experts agree. We are still #6 in both major polls, and have received a much needed wake up call without taking a loss. Last year’s wake up call came with 2 losses. Texas Tech and Iowa State left Lincoln with wins after our Thursday night triumph over Missouri in Columbia (kind of like the whooping of the Huskies in Seattle). What did we do after that? How about winning 6 or our last 7 and watching our beloved Blackshirts become the nations top scoring defense. I can’t wait for the rest of this (hopefully special) season. GO BIG RED!
The fact is a lower tier team all too easily exploited the weakness we all feared and hoped like heck wasn’t there.
Well, it was and likely still is there and when a couch like Bill Snyder or Mack Brown game plans along similar lines, look out.

We'll see....
As a KSU fan, I can’t wait for Thursday. And like you Husker fans that are hoping the SDSU game woke you up, I feel the same way about the UCF game, but for different reasons. Our QB and passing game has been suspect all year, but in crunch time he stepped up, made throws, and ultimately won the game against a pretty stout defense. Will that give him the confidence going forward that he’s lacked? If it does, and we develop at least a potent passing game, look out. As much as I respect your D, I don’t think you’ll be able to fully contain Thomas. The question is, will we have a balanced enough attack to keep you from stacking 8 in the box all game? We’ll see. Let’s do this!
