Cob of the Week: Nebraska, Taylor Martinez, Husker Fans, Texas, Kansas State, Ryan Mallett, and Pitt
Well, a whole bunch of suckage this week, including our own. And to show that while have a rooting interest, we can be balanced and not try to gloss over the suckage of some of our own.
Oklahoma because they've yet to show up for any week besides FSU.
Nebraska because they would have lost to 99% of the country on Saturday.
Taylor Martinez. Three turnovers and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against an FCS team? Martinez's mistakes opened the door to a potential upset and gave the decided underdog a huge boost of confidence that they could do the unbelievable.
Husker Fans Promoting Martinez for the Heisman. Yes, Taylor Martinez looked pretty good against Washington, but Heisman campaigns have to be based on more than that. Martinez is a redshirt freshman for crying out loud. Promoting Martinez is an insult to what Ndamukong Suh accomplished last season; just because he's a Husker doesn't mean that fans need to hype the kid up. Could Martinez win a Heisman someday? Maybe some day down the line.
Pitt: The Panthers were supposed to be the class of the Big East this season and were ranked to start the season. Now they're 1-2 after being blown out at home by Miami. Steve Pederson is working his magic on a football program once again!
Texas because the fightin' Rick Neuheisel's beat them at home.....by a lot. Really, Longhorns... Skippy???
Ryan Mallett's 4th quarter because their offense got complacent and he threw the two picks that ultimately cost them the chance at a top 5 ranking.

I don’t think Martinez is truly a Heisman caliber player at this point in time, but he did post great numbers and was one of the most electrifying players in college football until last Saturday. Giving the kid some recognition is in no way an insult to Ndamukong Suh. In that logic, suggesting anyone from Nebraska should get it should be an insult to Tommie Frazier.
There is a huge difference between recognition and “Heisman recognition.”

Maybe I'm over-estimating Husker fans
but how serious was this talk? He deserved it as much as anyone the first few weeks, but I don’t think anyone was actually saying he will be a contender when it’s all said and done (maybe they were, I just joined so I haven’t really read those threads). Votes now are relatively harmless.
Gave it to Nebraska.
This team has a chance to be special, but someone has to step up and take the leadership role. I honestly think that is the one thing they lack. Heart. The spark to rally around. Championship teams take care of business week in and week out. Nebraska did not take care of business on Saturday. A leader would have stepped up at halftime against SDSU and Nebraska would have rolled, not rolled over.
Not to nitpick
Martinez had an awful game and deserves to be on here, but that taunting penalty was not a legit call. He was tossing the ball to an official and it hit an SDSU player in the facemask. The radio crew was going nuts over it. The PPV replay had a far too narrow shot of it, but the radio guys were just beside themselves.

Wrong Ref
I didn’t get to see this on TV but the radio guys were all over. I have to agree with jdhusker on this. They were saying that the ref that called it wasn’t even in a good line to see what really happened. The ref that Taylor was throwing the ball too should have talked it out to tell him that the SDSU was just in the way and the ball wasn’t meant for him but it never happened so the penelty held up.
Gotta be Texas, IMO.
I’m wondering if we’re back to the days of Mack Brown doing less with more in Austin. There is simply no reason UT should struggle like they are this year. One has to wonder what, if anything, Texas would have accomplished without Colt McCoy and Vince Young. I’d love to compare Mack Brown to TO, considering they both struggled at times in their first ten years, but Texas has so much more talent than NU ever did, with the possible exception of the 60-3 run in the 90s: Texas simply shouldn’t play this poorly.
