Big Ten Divisions - Announcement, Rumor, Speculation - Open Thread
It's on at 6:00 pm Central on BTN. Here's the official announcement:
CHICAGO - The Big Ten Network will air the official live announcement of the Big Ten football divisions with Commissioner Jim Delany at 7 p.m. ET tonight. The show will also be streamed live at BigTenNetwork.com
Lead studio host Dave Revsine will host the football special and be joined by analysts Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith. Confirmed guests will include athletic directors David Brandon of Michigan, Mark Hollis of Michigan State, Gene Smith of Ohio State, Tom Osborne of Nebraska, and other Big Ten Network analysts.
ESPN's Andy Katz reports the divisional alignments as follows:
- Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern and Minnesota.
- Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana and Illinois.
They are expected to announce a yearly cross-over game - you'd think that Nebraska would play Wisconsin every season, but it just as well could be Penn State.
Holy cow. We're going to play Michigan every year, probably for the rest of my life. Has that really set in with anybody yet?
I've had a day full of exploding firewalls, T-1 lines, and Lotus Notes upgrades - I should be free by 6:00 pm, but please consider this an open thread for discussion about the division alignments. The future is.... upon us?

Let me the first to say to Michigan
SUCK IT!
HAHA, just kidding.
The whole B10 thing is really starting to sink in for me, but won’t totally hit me till next year. I think it’s like when you move, you think you’re ready, but it’s the little things really catch you, like when there are In and Outs and Jack in the Boxes instead of Runza and Amigos.
You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool.

I bet Wisky is furious
Annual rivalry with Iowa is gone. Potential rivalry with Nebraska is gone. None of their rivals are in their division. More average travel time, and their division is more top heavy to boot.
I think Nebraska fared pretty well, although I really wanted to play Wisconsin annually. But then again, we’ll get a couple years to kick in Michigan’s teeth while they’re still down, so I guess I’ll get over it.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Yeah, someone had to get the shaft, and I think Wisky kinda got it.
Maybe MSU as well, but someone had to get shafted.
Yea,
Wisky really got left out on an Island. For as much talk as Alveraz did, they really lost out on ALL of their rivalries. One would think their permanent cross-over HAS to be Minnesota. Did they really get ANYTHING they wanted?
Of course, nothing is official until 6PMCDT.

They’re not happy.

And they shouldn't be
I feel like other schools could/should have made more moderate concessions in order to prevent Wisconsin and Iowa from taking the brunt of this change.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
I only speak for myself
But I started off furious, and then backed off the cliff during the press conference. Playing tOSU and PSU every year gives us a better recruiting presence on the east coast, and gives us the opportunity to establish ourselves as a power football school. As long as we play Minnesota every year, I will be fine.
Ultimately the Badgers keep the Minnesota game, and we’re finally getting an opportunity to establish ourselves as ‘one of the big boys’ of the conference. It cost us the yearly rivalry with Iowa, but I think it will pay off eventually.

Pretty much my train of thoughts too...
My first reaction was ‘HA HA’!
But now in the cool air of dawn… The Badgers have very beatable foes in Illinois, Indiana, and Purdue (of which only Purdue seems to be going in the right direction) and Minnesota [this year the Great Pumpkin WILL rise from the pumpkin patch!] . So that, combined with their annual lineup of complete cupcakes on the non-conference plate means bowl games pretty much every year. They as much as anybody in the conference has tOSU figured out. If they can get over their Penn State issues (which may well fade rapidly amongst post-Paterno turmoil) they could see themselves with a pretty good chance to be in the championship game year in and year out.

Don't get the anger there. Yeah the divisions are weighted so ours is slightly harder
but they’re keeping the Ohio State rivalry as a crossover game, and they have the instate rivalry with MSU.
From what I’ve seen and heard, this is the absolute best way to do the divisions possible. I mean, they had to know there were going to be SOME concessions when we came aboard. Didn’t they?

If protected rivalry rumors are right
Then Nebraska’s schedule could look something maybe kind of roughly like this (I picked the conference home and away and non-protected cross division games arbitrarily):
2011:
Nonconf: Fresno St., Washington, @Wyoming
Conf: @Iowa, Mich, @MSU, Minn, @NW, PSU, @OSU, Wis
2012:
Nonconf: Southern Miss, @UCLA
Conf: Iowa, @Mich, MSU, @Minn, NW, @PSU, Ill, @Ind
2013:
Nonconf: Wyoming, @Southern Miss, UCLA
Conf: @Iowa, Mich, @MSU, Minn, @NW, PSU, @Pur, OSU
2014:
Nonconf: @Fresno St., Miami
Conf: Iowa, @Mich, MSU, @Minn, NW, @PSU, Ind, @Wis
As long as Iowa is the last game of the year
Other wise, this is no good!
So I tried the Barbasol and Rotel dip and I was very dissapointed!
My guess is Penn St.

Couple of things...
1) I’m not 100% sold on Katz’s source. I don’t see Whiskey getting that screwed over.
2) No cross-division rivalry game can be played the last week of the regular season. Just to prevent the same game ever being played in back-to-back weeks.

That means
The following two years should feel like cake. Replace Wisconsin and Ohio State with, say, Illinois and Indiana, and that schedule gets a lot easier.
by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 1, 2010 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions
you'd think
with just two variable cross-divisional games per year, maybe they’d stagger them so a team wouldn’t have to play the same conf schedule two years in a row… ie, @Wisconsin and vs Ohio State the first year, then maybe @Ohio State and vs Indiana the next… then @Indiana and vs Illinios… etc
They want you guys to play the best/biggest programs immediately.
As much media hype as possible. Plus your fans get to visit the premier venues early. Consider it a “grand tour.”
Rumor?

Thoughts from Ann Arbor
Wow, welcome to the Big Ten, eh fellas?! Looks like you get trial by fire, while they give us in Blue a bit of a break during the down years. In 2013 though, you can expect our schedule difficulty to flip-flop a little, when you play Purdue and Indiana/Illinois, and we probably get PSU and Wisconsin. By then, the brass will have decided that you’ve been properly introduced, and that they’ve given Michigan enough time to get better.
Sounds like fun! See you at the Big House in November. (Maize > Corn)
One more thing
It looks like we’re in the slightly tougher division, if Michigan does come back to prominence soon. We (Michigan & Nebraska) get 2 medium-strength teams (MSU, Northwestern) against the other guys’ 1 (Purdue). Although their division is more top-heavy as it stands now, with Ohio State and Penn State.
Go Division O
That slightly tougher schedule
should better prepare you for OSU every year. See that as an advantage.
It will be fun making a trip to the Big House. What kind of beer should I bring?
by Aaron Musfeldt on Sep 2, 2010 6:52 AM CDT up reply actions
I'll tell you what
We’ll supply the beer – this first round’s on us! You guys just bring your game faces. And maybe a little of that Val’s pizza? I can’t wait to see Big Red come to play Big Blue, in November. Last game before the end with Ohio State (for us) and Iowa (for you). Can’t get much better than that. Hopefully we’ll be able to provide you with some competition by then!
A rising tide raises all boats!
The Big XII North schedule did not exactly hold the national spotlight. Arguably the top teams (NU, OU, UT) of the Big XII, over the course of its existence, was probably better than the top of the Big Ten (OSU, UM, PSU) over the same period. But It seems to me its the next tier that makes the schedule intriguing. Could the Big XII have provided a schedule that matches up with OSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, PSU, UM (someday)? Maybe its my Husker pride, but the remaking of the Big Ten may be just what was needed to bring SEC like attention to the Conference. Its not just the Huskers schedule . . . all the Big Ten schedules look good (imho).
by splitting the divisions the way they did
the big ten was able to make sure it’s top 6 teams where split evenly so all teams will have to play at least three of the best if not more. In the past if was possible to miss out on the majority of the best teams if your schedule was aligned perfectly. That is no longer possible and everyone needs the trial by fire to claim a berth in the championship game.
No one is getting Rubio's rights unless they pry them from our cold dead fingers.

OK, but come on.
Big Ten . . . 2011 . . . next year. This is behind us. Can you believe that we have spent time online discussing this since 12:32? Yada, yada, yada. Just another example how we have become so obsessed with every tidbit of information we can get hold of. Isn’t there something more important out there to concern ourselves with than what division Nebraska is in and what the schedule for 2011 and beyond is going to be? Let’s get real! How about we focus on important stuff, like obsessing over who Coach Pelini is going to start on Saturday! Oh wait. . . why is it any of our business? Are we all on a “need to know basis?” Geez, and we wonder why America has lost its compass. I long for the days when I didn’t have all of this technology and when I wasn’t a slave to it. The simple joy of waking up in the morning, opening the paper, and reading about the previous day’s game on Sunday morning. If I owned this damn computer I’d throw it through the wall right now! And after that, my cell phone. By the way Jon, I’m out of Makers and I am coming your way this weekend!
