Wonder what the Big Ten CG will be named.......
Here is an article that provides just a little more solidification that there will be a Big Ten CG in 2011.
Jim Delany says he and the AD's around the Big Ten wants to play a 9 game conference schedule, not in 2011 but asap. This should make it possible to conserve the established rivalries while splitting divisions up with balanced power.
Balanced power - I find it interesting that everyone looks at the past 10,20,30 years as a meter to balance the power, yes I admit that especially in the Big Ten, with and without Nebraska, have a good collection of perennial powers and that those will more than likely never go away, maybe a down year or two or a short era (I am eluting to the BC era) but they will eventually bounce back. What about the schools that are not traditional powers? What if Illinois, Northwestern, and Indiana become the next Boise St. or TCU? Do we keep divisions open for realignment in the event there is a powershift that sees one division incredibly stronger than the other ie Big XII to keep the conference balanced? Well for now we should all have come to the realization the division split will be the clear East/West split it is nearly perfect anyway as we speak.
Conference Championship Game - "Real Men Playing Real Football" Jim Delany says he wants to sell the naming rights to the game.......The Papa John's Big Ten Conference Championship or maybe it'll be the Ford who knows we will find out soon enough. In the mean time what is your best name?
Alright the anticipation is building and I can't wait then again I can't wait for this season to start or for 10/16/2010! Let me know what you think!

I never saw where he wanted to sell the naming rights to the Big Ten conference game, but it makes sense.
I’m going to have to think about this one.

Not that it's a big deal....
Delany expects there to be one next season, although he’s not sure where it would be played and if the site would rotate. He also wants to sell naming rights to the game.
9 Conference Games...
…is just a bad idea.
They will list reasons such as preserving rivalries just as the PAC listed playing round robin. However, when the PAC went back insiders noted the real reason was to ensure everyone got to play their big dog (USC) yearly. In the Big Ten, the real reason is to make sure everyone plays the major 4 draws as much as possible.
They should have studied the PAC closer – nearly 1/2 of their coaches grew to dislike the 9 game conference schedule as it cost bowl berths, limited home games for the alumni, and/or notably cut the OOC schedule strength.
It also has a negative impact on the BTN revenue. Nebraska added about 7 games to the conference inventory. Going to a 9th conference game will wipe out most if not all of these gains (depending on if the teams cancel the notable 1 and 1 games or the cupcake at home).
Prediction for the OOC schedule as teams scramble to keep 7 home games:
A 1 and 1 which may or may not be against a notable opponent (at best)
2 home games against cream puffs – MAC or FCS.
…yeah?…
I like your insight
You seem to be very knowledgeable about the game. Its refreshing to have an intelligent poster, I don’t mind the occasional GO BIG RED fan but usually I get the fan that doesn’t know $#!* from apple butter simply trying to say he hates Nebraska. I think that there are legitimate arguments for both sides and for the most part I think (I know the BIG TEN will have it’s “BIG 4”) that the conference as a whole will create decent SOS for most of the teams. It is rumored that Nebraska will be playing So. Carolina for a OCG when they arrive in 2011. I know it’s not the strongest SEC school, but it is an SEC school and a far cry from So Dakota State or Western Kentucky. Look forward to more of your input.

Thanks for the kudos
You had a good point about the balance of power. The Illini AD touched on it briefly in a radio interview when he noted part of the decision was how long to stay in the divisions. I was hoping for rotating sub-divisions, but this doesn’t look like it is going to happen.
From a financial perspective (the drive behind expansion), there must be some advantage I haven’t considered for going to the 9 game schedule (it would be arrogant to assume I know more about NCAAF finances than the administrators and research firms do) or they are looking at it from a standpoint of convenience.
Another possibility is preparation for future expansion – there is still talk of expansion later this year (back on Delany’s time frame).
