Around SBN: Yu Darvish Diagnosed With Mariners Fever

You can make all the jokes you want about Guido and his brother working for Bill Byrne, and you can comment on the long-term stability of the Big 12, but what should stand out here is this:

Dan Beebe blew a lot of smoke about bigger TV contracts and penalizing Nebraska and Colorado to benefit Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. It’s about time someone called his bluff to make him show his cards.

This isn’t about greed. This is about separating bullshit from reality.

This is about

A&M being so broke that they HAVE to take the $20 mil they were promised. If they were making money like Texas and OU, they would be able to decline the offer as well. This tells you who the little one of the “Big 3” was. A&M isn’t on the level of Texas or OU.

wow

you really have no idea how wrong you are, do you?

A&M made $20 million IN PROFIT after going 4-8 during the 2008 season

Our athletic department is far from broke, and is second to only texas is generating the most revenue in the conference. Yes, that includes Oklahoma. You might want to get a clue before you go off spouting about things you know nothing about.

Then why is the Athletic Department in debt?

Why are they taking millions of dollars in loans from the university?

Why are they being money grabbing whores who are going to take the pay from Mizzou, KU, BU, KSU, and ISU?

Why don’t they reject the offer as well?

we aren't in debt
Why are they taking millions of dollars in loans from the university?

A few years ago, Robert Gates saw a need for a line of credit for the athletic department to pay for some renovations that weren’t in the current budget at the time, so he arranged the LOC. That is one line of credit, not multiple loans. Get your facts straight.

Why are they being money grabbing whores who are going to take the pay from Mizzou, KU, BU, KSU, and ISU?

We’ve made it clear we don’t care who we get the money from, as long as we get what we’re promised. Holding someone to their promise isn’t being a money-grubbing whore.

Why don’t they reject the offer as well?

Probably because the guarantee of $20 million a year is what kept us from going to the SEC. If we’ve been promised something, why should we refuse it?

Well...one year ago...
Byrne said in a statement that the athletics department had to eliminate the positions because A&M officials could make only $3.5 million in cuts without reducing personnel.

“Our goal was to make spending cuts that would not impact the competitiveness of our teams and to ensure that our student-athletes have a good experience here,” Byrne said. “The cuts came across the entire spectrum of the athletic department. This difficult decision came after an exhaustive review of the entire program and with great reluctance.”

A&M’s athletics department must begin to repay a $16 million loan from the university in November.

So are you saying that one year after having to cut the budget $4.5 million, that A&M has not only made that all back…but also paid back the entire loan?

by Husker Mike on Jul 30, 2010 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

you're confusing budgets and debt service

being asked to cut a budget by the university (what the article you referenced is talking about) is completely different from being in debt

That budget cut didn’t begin to take place until the 2009-10 school year. The info I am referencing is from the 2008-09 school year. Revenue and budgets aren’t the same thing. I actually expect our profits to increase in 2009-10 because of the budget cuts.

by Beergut on Jul 31, 2010 3:54 AM CDT up reply actions

No, I'm not... You appear to be the confused one.

A&M’s athletic department had to cut their budget by $4.5 million. If so, that should improve profitability if revenue stays equal.

But the article also mentions that the “athletic department must begin to repay a $16 million loan” starting last November.

But then you said

we aren’t in debt

So either (a) the entire $16 million has now been repaid in total or (b) you’re confused because the athletic department is paying off that $16 million loan.

Now, to be fair, Nebraska also has revenue bonds to pay of the north stadium expansion project, so Nebraska “has debt” as well.

That was quick

Big 12-2 lasted 2 months….

So I tried the Barbasol and Rotel dip and I was very dissapointed!

as for the OP

we’re perfectly within our rights to do this

all we’re doing is demand that the Big 12 keep their word, and we want the deal in writing

Where's the bullshit?

Note that the very first line of the linked article says they will start receiving $20M in 2012-13. By that time, the Fox TV contract will have been renegotiated (resulting in a higher payout), ESPN/ABC will still be paying the Big 12 what they were before, and there will be two fewer mouths to feed. I’m not necessarily going to call A&M desperate or greedy (yet), but I am going to call this a little premature saber-rattling.

I also think it’s a little overly optimistic on A&M’s part to think they can stroll off to the SEC any old time. That ignores the reality of why the SEC would want to expand in the first place and, just as importantly, Texas politics.

it's bullshit

if they don’t pay well.

That remains to be seen, not that it won’t happen, not that the Big 12 might not stay together for a while, but…. well… having been a consultant for a long time, it’s one thing to invoice someone, and something different to actually get paid.

and here
However, he called the projected average annual TV splits of $20 million for Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M, with the other schools getting $14 million-$17 million each, "too high, just not realistic.
