I've been trying to figure out how the world works. Seems to me the first thing one would do upon hearing a valued member of an organization was thinking of leaving would be to ask that member why they were thinking of leaving and what could be done to help them decide to stay. Am I correct in presuming that either such overtures were not made or the press did not report them? If the former, shame on the Big Twelve and if the latter, shame on the reporters. If memory serves, the first response to talk of Nebraska joining the Big Ten was a request for a pledge of loyalty and then talk of how the process would be finished. Maybe they'd have been better off figuring out how improve the league?
