Six Big 12 teams headed to the Pac-10?
Orangebloods.com, the Texas rivals site, is reporting this afternoon through anonymous sources that six Big 12 teams have been invited to join the Pac-10 -- Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Colorado.
AARRRgghghAAAggghh... the bombs are falling!
Either that, or I'm going to start quoting "anonymous sources" about Tom Osborne flying in a plane to a secret meeting with Jim Delany just to see how many other sites pick up on the story and run with it.
Here's the thing - Chip Brown is reporting it, which is surprising because Brown isn't some fly by night guy. OTOH, it's hard to believe, partially because the implication is that Missouri would get invited to the Big 10 and we wouldn't (like someone would invite Missouri without thinking of us first?), and that Texas A&M would split up with Texas.
The biggest reason to believe it's bullshit - there's too much information in here for one guy to know.

to the Chip Brown – Orangebloods story also says Nebraska won’t get invited to the Big 10.

Again...
I ask this question:
We are talking about more than just football here. So, this would mean that if all of these teams get invited and accept the offer to join the respective conferences…that leaves out Baylor, ISU, Kansas, and KSU.
You’re telling me that KU basketball will be forced to exist on it’s own, or in some shit conference? No way.
I’m starting to think that all of this realignment crap is….well…..crap.

Except for one thing:
football drives the budget bus. Even the mighty KU basketball team can’t maximize revenue on the scale of a successful football program. The reputation for KU basketball probably gets them into a major conference, but just barely. This also explains the somewhat quick trigger finger on Mangino: when you’re getting wins and fan support (i.e. pulling in the dollars) you can get away with being an egomaniacal asshat. You CAN’T do that if you’re not winning.

Now it’s starting to get fun. Jon, let’s make this distinction; it might be bullshit, but it’s BEVO bullshit!! Lane Grindle on “Sports Nightly” said this Chip Brown guy has LOTS of connections in the UT Athletic Dept.
For now, I chalk this up as another episode of DeLoss Dodds posturing and chest-thumping….and Tom will just continue to sit at the table quietly with that omnipotent, grandfatherly smile.

Yes, this.
Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.
All of a sudden
things are getting a lot more real:

Not when that “one guy” is Chip Brown. This isn’t a random Kansas City sports talk show host espousing a story for ratings. Orangebloods gets at least 100k+ hits a week without creating a shitstorm by way of conference realignment talk.
Kevin Kugler lends a lot of credibility to this story, mainly because of it’s source. Chip Brown will be on Unsportsmanlike Conduct tomorrow to discuss the article in-depth.
I doubt he’s as knowledgeable on Big 10 expansion or their possible suitors as the article would indicate, but I believe the Pac10 portion verbatim.

look like we can put this story to the side...

Looks like this guy reported on a possible scenario, not actually what the pac 10 is actually going to do. But hell, I dunno.
At first, I actually wanted Neb to stay in the Big XII, but now, just give me a conference with BCS status and security. If it means selling our souls to the big ten, then lets give it to them.
Judging from the tone
Of the Journal Star’s reports from the Big 12 meetings, I think we could actually be headed toward something here.
If Nebraska gets into the Big Ten, this is going to be a wild, wacky, but ultimately really fun rollercoaster ride. If Nebraska doesn’t and these six schools head to the Pac-10, this could be disastrous for Nebraska athletics.
Bottom line – if there’s any truth to this, we’re coming up on just about the most important two months in the Nebraska athletic program’s history. If not, well, carry on.
Wow what happens to the Kansas schools?
They would have to be picked up by someone right?

Kansas would
but Kansas State…. ouch.
same with Iowa State. They’d probably have to join the MAC or something like that.

Wow, I never expected conference expansion to end up playing out this way.
I thought/hoped Nebraska and possibly MO would join a Big 10 “West,” but didn’t think half the Big 12 would go to the Pac 10. I guess I thought Texas would head a “Rump Big 12” and plug in some former SWAC buddies. If this is actually happening it will be interesting to see if OK and ATM go to the SEC and if the BIg 10 and SEC both blow up to 16 teams. What will Notre Dame do? What about ACC and Big East? This seems to be huge, but maybe its only Jim Delaney shaking the tree?
