How Many Husker Fans Are Following the World Cup?
How many of you Husker fans are following the World Cup? Big game (obviously!) against Algeria coming up this morning. I notice that some of our other SB Nation sites are running open threads even though they're not soccer sites..... so I guess that you can consider this kind of an open thread for World Cup discussion.
If the community isn't interested, then I'll leave it alone. I know that there are times where going off-topic (doing things that aren't strictly about Nebraska football) has hurt us in the past, but the community has grown well enough that we may be open to discussing other sports besides just Husker football.
Fact is, I don't follow a lot of other sports anymore. Husker stuff and especially college football kind of consumes me. However, I have three kids in soccer, two playing competitive, one still playing in a recreational league who will move up to competitive next year, so I've now spent quite a few years being around soccer.
I tried to get my oldest son interested in baseball when he was young. He hated it. He wasn't bad at it, he just hated standing around. Soccer gave him the chance to run and run and move, so he's stuck with it since. He spent a couple years playing tackle football, but the youth program ended at eighth grade. His conclusion - he'd play a lot more soccer than football, so there you go.
My daughter had to fight through some health problems, but plays competitive. Youngest son was the only one who had any liking for baseball, yet chose to play soccer instead. Probably influenced by his siblings more than anything.
This time of year, it's soccer, soccer, soccer. Games, practice, tournaments, and the two oldest are also coaching this season. This is NOT a complaint.
It wasn't always that way. I find it funny that non-soccer fans have to go around telling others how much they hate soccer, especially whenever the World Cup rolls around.
Hey, the sport was Ndamukong Suh's choice as his first love - why shouldn't that be good enough for you? Are you one of those people that thinks it's a sissy sport (which makes it clear you haven't watched it much), or that it's boring because there isn't a lot of scoring?
Anyway - consider this an open thread. I'm interested in what the community has to say.

I've been almost obsessively following this World Cup
But I’ll be on the road for most of the game, so no open thread for me.
It’s been kind of tough to find anyone around here in Nebraska who even understands soccer, let alone cares about it. But I can still yell at my TV by myself.
World Cup? What's that?
SOCCER? Hell, we finally got rid of basketball for a few months, and now you want me to watch soccer???
we
get screwed out of another goal again on a phantom offsides call…..

Huge soccer fan
Favorite sport these days actually. First fell in love with it during the 1998 World Cup in France. Though now that I’ve been following it for so long and following the club game so closely, I am less excited about the World Cup. The very best clubs — Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, Real Madrid — typically boast better line-ups than even the very best national squads, and they certainly practice and play together far more often, which makes for more exciting and flowing, offensive games. The World Cup is still a ton of fun though for all the passion and excitement it creates around the globe, but I’d probably prefer to watch a Champions League final (albeit one without any Italian or Mourinho-coached squad…too defensive and cynical).
I actually took yesterday
off work so I could watch the US game vs. Algeria. I don’t follow soccer as closely as other sports, but the World Cup is such a great event that it’s a shame to miss those weekday afternoon games. Any Husker fan would appreciate the USA soccer team. They’re gritty, hard working players that don’t have a lot of flashy moves, but simply get the job done and never fold under pressure.
Been Watching Intently...
I love watching the international game. I think that Americans get turned off by soccer largely because the highest level of the sport is in the European leagues, and “minor league” sports typically don’t fy well with most Americans. As it is, I watch pretty much every match — even those that have nothing to do with USA.
On the other hand, I think that Americans will watch Team USA in any sport (see Curling) out of national pride.
Finally, think Team USA soccer isn’t relevant to Husker fans? The American Outlaws, the biggest fan organization for Team USA, was founded and is headquartered in Lincoln.

Personally
i think soccer is horrible. America will never embrace it because we have FOOTBALL!! I’m not one to bash other people for their sports, i just don’t care for it. As long as you enjoy it,Enjoy!! I would rather watch grass grow on a 100 degree day in August.
Matthew 11:28-30
Homer Simpson: "Mmmmm,Beeeeer!!"
Dean Wermer: "Fat,drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life!"
Complacency is the enemy of progress!
I'm not normally a soccer fan, but I think watching the USA in the world cup is compelling.
Its one major sport where the USA isn’t a super power; yet the USA does well and plays a game I think soccer fans worldwide respect. I think the game itself is inferior to American football or basketball, but I’m still glad to watch the USA games as they advance to the round of 16.
