Questions From the Big Ten Network For Husker Fans
One of the online editors for the Big Ten Network contacted us for a Q&A for their site. I know how I'd answer these, but it would be better if the answers to some of their questions came from Husker fans rather than just me or one of the other CN guys.
I thought about breaking these into separate articles, but it makes more sense to contain them in a single URL that Big 10 fans can access.
Questions come after the jump.
When Big Ten fans make their first trip to Lincoln in 2011, what is the one place they must go to and one thing they must do?
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own -- but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?

For my money
Maybe not the gameday bar recommendation most are looking for, but I would recommend staying an extra day after the game and heading over to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. It’s a good drive away, but it’s an all-day event and worth the money.
Though super plain, I like the PSU unis. It’s classic and screams defensive football.
Given the opportunity, I would love to be able to visit the horseshoe for an evening game. That Texas game looked awesome.
It's not like they're not driving through or flying into Omaha
So its not like HDZ is out of the way or anything.

When Big Ten fans make their first trip to Lincoln in 2011, what is the one place they must go to and one thing they must do?
The Brass Rail! No but seriously, the sunken gardens is beautiful when in bloom. (There is a brick there dedicated to my mom.)
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own — but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
I like the Hawkeyes uniforms. Simple but cool.
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
Ohio State would be cool to witness…. as would Penn St. Lots of history.

Try the best steak in town at Misty’s. And I agree about the Henry Doorly Zoo if you’re in Omaha.
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own — but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
I’d say it’s a toss-up between Michigan and Penn State. They’re both classic, have simple helmet designs, and look crisp.
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
Camp Randall. But the Big House, Columbus, and Happy Valley aren’t far behind.

The Horseshoe, although, The Big House will be fun, as well as, Happy Valley. I also expect the post game partying to be exceptional in Ann Arbor, Iowa City, Columbus, and College Town.
When Big Ten fans make their first trip to Lincoln in 2011, what is the one place they must go to and one thing they must do?
HDZ is a definite place to hit up if you are coming through Omaha. Also, Big Ten fans should try out the fast food restaurant Runza. I know it is always a place I make sure to go to whenever I come back to Nebraska.
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own — but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
Penn State has one of the most simple yet classic uniforms. The buckeyes also have some pretty iconic unis.
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
Kinnick Stadium will be a blast because I think it will be a great rivalry, but I am excited to see how much red we can pack into the Horseshoe, The Big House, and Happy Valley.

RUNZA

Love the Yellow & Black Attack look of the Hawkeyes
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
I wanna see how much Red can get in a White out @ Penn St.
Or manybe start a new tradition @ Whisky since they do the all red thing as well maybe we go Black for the Blackshirts @ Camp Randall
So I tried the Barbasol and Rotel dip and I was very dissapointed!
When Big Ten fans make their first trip to Lincoln in 2011, what is the one place they must go to and one thing they must do?
I would say Misty’s for a steak and The Sidetrack on Friday night.
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own — but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
Penn State has a classic uniform. You also have to respect the Michigan helmet and the buckeye leafs on Ohio State’s helmet.
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
The Horseshoe #1, The Big House #2, Happy Valley #3, Camp Randal #4
Gopher fan here
not that we have great uni’s…because we don’t, but The Bank is a beatiful stadium…even if our team sucks right now. I wasn’t going to say anything so long as the big house, the shoe and happy valley were the stadiums mentioned…but had to say something once camp randall and kinnick came up.

I'd love to visit the new Minny stadium
Its definitely an improvement for the school and the program. I’ve heard it looks very nice and has great site lines.

It's especially awesome for night games
The open end of the stadium faces downtown…if only Bruinicks would let them sell alcohol.

Well OK, here I go.
#1-Eats For eats, I know alot will say Misty’s. Fine for steak/prime rib, but its not in downtown (where the stadium is) and there are probably a ton of steak places at Big Ten locals. I would say hit up a Runza place. Its a Nebraska chain based off of some German food. Its cheap, kinda greasy, uniquely Nebraskan (as a normal food item) and if you like cabbage and meat, it will hit the spot. Also, Lincoln has a ton a Greek food places downtown, good stuff too.
BUT, in the stadium, get the Wimmer’s hotdogs. They use so much red dye that it will stain your bun red. But hey, they are awesome.
#1-Drinks To go drunk crazy, Barry’s or Sidetracks. If you are a Cub’s fan, there is a Cubs themed bar on O street as well. Can’t remember the name. To have some decor, goto Barrymore’s. The bar is the backstage of the old Lincoln Opera house. Cool Venue.
- Nebraskan preferences are inline with Girls Generation. So its the Hawkeyes
- I hear that Camp Randall is bad ass. I hear that Penn State has good ice cream. I will go with Wisconsin.
There's a Misty's downtown (11th and P)
Different ambience, same vittles

Prime rib on Friday night at Misty’s when the band plays, followed by a trip to The Sidetrack.

It’s still Michigan for me – no one mistakes them for anybody else.
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
1. The Big House 2. Beaver Stadium 3. The Horseshoe. Since none of those are a reality for me, however (travel costs too much), I’m very much looking forward to Nebraska’s first game at Minnesota, as I hear their new stadium is really nice. No offense, Goldy, but if y’all don’t get better I fully expect Minneapolis to become the new Lawrence, KS for Nebraska fans – as in, “easy road trip, lots of tickets available.”

True, but
any CFB fan would know the difference – Michigan uses a much deeper blue. Plus, when the hell will anyone air a Delaware game in the midwest by which we might get confused?

Sigh
It iscommon knowledge that Iowa and Wisconsin already own Minneapolis so I havenodoubt the Huskers traveling fanbase will bejust fine intermsof staking their own claim to Minnesota’s stadium. Just remember, those goalposts belong to us.

"those goalposts" were in the Metrodome...
not The Bank. Mr. I barely beat MN in Iowa last year.

Iowa only scored 12, but Minny was scoreless 2 years in a row.
55-0
12-0
I think Minny was a much tougher team under Mason. I’m interested to see how they look this fall and if Brewster stays.

true
But notice how Adam Weber was our starting quarterback for both years? Oh crap he’s still our starter…I hate you Brewster. :)
But you got to admit that our defense has gotten much better. That has to count for something.

When Big Ten fans make their first trip to Lincoln in 2011, what is the one place they must go to and one thing they must do?
I’ll leave this one for others since I haven’t spent a much time in Lincoln in years.
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own — but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
My first instinct was to go with Wisconsin since they’re nearly identical to Nebraska from the neck down, but I’ll say Penn State. I’ve always loved the simplicity of ours so I can appreciate a team that makes Nebraska or Alabama uniforms look flashy.
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
I would have to guess it’s tOSU or Penn St. for the majority. Personally, it’s Iowa. I’m from Nebraska and live in Iowa near the wife’s family so I’m really hoping Iowa-Nebraska becomes a nice rivalry.
When Big Ten fans make their first trip to Lincoln in 2011, what is the one place they must go to and one thing they must do?
Must be a lot of Omaha homers here, because I don’t see the HDZ as a highlight of a football trip to Lincoln. My vote begins at Misty’s (yes, the Havelock location) on Friday night, followed by O Street. The bars on the night before a game are loaded with both home & away fans. Great way to get to know real Husker fans of all ages (above 21). Then on gameday, grab a slice of Val’s at the game, and a Runza on the way out of town. Btw, they’re not wimmer’s hotdogs, they are fairbury all beef franks!
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own — but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
I have always liked Michigan’s uni’s. Two of the three primary colors makes for a powerful match. Plus the wolverine antlers (is that what they’re called?) on the helmet are cool.

The Big House and the Horseshoe. Two of the largest collegiate stadiums, plus the marching bands (don’t forget the bands!).

LOL. They’re called “wings.”

I'm going to forever refer to them as antlers.

Didn’t mean to offend. Found a good overview of the “Winged Helmet” here, courtesy of the good folks at the Bentley Historical Library.

The Bentley Historical Library is an awesome place to learn about Michigan.
Any Husker fans know if Nebraska has a similar resource?
That is sooooo not funny - Maize N Brew Dave
Yeah, its right on campus, the Nebraska Historical something or other
Just to the east of union. and across from the capital.
Media Guide
Unfortunately, I haven’t found a great online source that has all of the history. What’s out there is mostly disjointed. So I would just suggest ordering a media guide. They have everything you could ever want. Not sure if you can get one electronically or not.
Proud winner of the 2010 Corn Nation March Madness Tournament.
My 2-cents
If the Sidetrack is what it once was, that is a must stop for any out of town fan on Friday night. Barry’s is close to the stadium and a lot of fun on Saturday morning.
I have always like Ohio State’s uniforms. They are a unique look and a little flashier than most.
Without question the history and mystique surrounding the Big House and the Horseshoe make them must see places. However, my Hawkeye friends assure me that no place is crazier on game day than Camp Randall. My worry is that I don’t rebound like I once did and the after effects of a Saturday in Wisconsin my be difficult to overcome!

Well...
I’m 27, so I’m unlike most traditionalists.
1). Arturo’s Restaurant and Cantina is a must-have.
2). Illinois unis are awesome!
3). The Big House.

I meant to finish 1)...
Arturo’s closed in ‘07, I forgot about that. There are a bunch of great places for food in the Haymarket District. There’s another great restaurant on ‘O’ st between like 12th and 9th, I for the life of me can’t remember the name, but it’s next to the babaganoosh restaurant.

I'll add some places I like
The Watering Hole- Get the grilled wings.
Cliff’s on O-Street- Order a shark water (or 3)
Sandy’s Order the Elk Creek Water Under-rated burgers, very good beers, all the food is good, service excellent.
Lazlo’s Brewery and Grill in the Haymarket
After the bars hit Lazzari’s Pizza on O Street. Get the spicy chicken, and look at the jersey’s on the wall.

Iowa
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?

Henry Doorly Zoo
Just to add to that….if you are gonna stop at the zoo in Omaha, make sure you dedicate an entire day. It’s not a casual “run through before lunch” type of place. Plus, you’d be wasting an opportunity if you didn’t see everything….which takes all day. Wonderful zoo.

And if you are going to spend a day at the zoo...
…make sure you get your hand stamped, and rather than eat at the park concession stands, walk three blocks west and have lunch at Zesto’s, and make sure you order some sort of ice cream. My recommendation is the hot fudge shake.
If you doubt me, watch the College World Series on ESPN. You’re guaranteed at least one Zesto reference every day. It’s such a tradition with the CWS that it’s my understanding that they’re building a new one across the street from the new stadium downtown.
Also, Wimmers bought out Fairbury Meats, so the Fairbury hot dog is technically a Wimmer’s product now. Same recipe though…
by Husker Mike on Jun 16, 2010 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Actually...
They changed the recipe when they bought out Fairbury Brand, so it is a different tasting product. A local meat packing place (Fairbury Steaks) actually began producing hotdogs that were from the same recipe as the old Fairbury Brand, now called Fairbury Steaks All Beef Franks.
Sorry, I’m originally from Fairbury and know the history….we take our hotdogs seriously. :-)

Just thought of another one.
Lincolnites, is King’s still open on Cornhusker Hwy? If so, that’s a fun little place to go. Think ’50s diner/drive-in stuff: cheese frenchies and the works. Great malts, too.
It’s really too bad Rock & Roll Runza couldn’t stay in business – that was another neat downtown dining experience.

Big 10 Questions
When Big Ten fans make their first trip to Lincoln in 2011, what is the one place they must go to and one thing they must do?
-Non-food/drink: trophy rooms, etc. in the stadium, state capitol building (both for its outstanding design and for lewd photo opps), SAC museum (not in Lincoln, I know).
-Food: I know it’s kind of froofy, but the Green Gateau has a breakfast that is god-damned delicious.
-Drinks: Barrymore’s or Cliff’s (does Cliff’s still exist?).
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own — but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
-Penn State. No names, no logos, no stickers, no b.s.
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
-Kinnick Stadium. Hayden Fry was a weasel, but I look forward to Nebraska trading body blows with the Hawkeyes. Let the hate begin.
"I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it."-George Bernard Shaw
Cliffs has moved to O-Street
The green balls made the move though, as did the shark waters. Sadly it’s no longer the closet bar to the stadium (I’ve always contended that it was closer than Barry’s, as we used to run there at half time).

When Big Ten fans make their first trip to Lincoln in 2011, what is the one place they must go to and one thing they must do?
—The Haymarket District in downtown Lincoln (Brewsky’s, Barry’s, Old Chicago)
—Misty’s in Havelock . Awesome prime rib. Todd Blackledge raved about the place on ABC.
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own — but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
—In no particular order: Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan (for obvious reasons)
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
—The Huskers have been to Happy Valley and Iowa in recent years, but it’s been a long, long time since they’ve been to either The Big House or The Horseshoe.
"No 00:01 Chances!!"
When Big Ten fans make their first trip to Lincoln in 2011, what is the one place they must go to and one thing they must do?
I agree with Misty’s they have one of the best prime ribs I’ve ever ate! Also as it has been said more than a few times now, the Henry Doorly Zoo is the best Zoo I’ve ever been too and is a must see while in Nebraska. I was born and rasied in Nebraska but am now active duty Army and don’t get to go back very often so when I do I make sure I go to those two places as well as Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shop because there is not one within 500 miles of where I am at.
Nebraska has some iconic uniforms of its own — but which Big Ten team has the best uniform, and why?
I would have to say my favorite is Penn State just becasue they are plain and simple, they look old school. I also like Minnesotas uniforms, I dont really know why, I just do lol.
What Big Ten stadium/road trip are a majority of Nebraska fans most excited about visiting?
Well since im active duty Army like I said and im stationed in far west Texas I don’t even get to go to memorial stadium anymore but if I were to be able to make it to a big 10 stadium I would have to say Penn State. Once again I just love the history there. I would like to make it to the horseshoe sometime too just cuz that place is huge and crazy on game day and I despise Ohio State so I would LOVE to see my Huskers beat them down on their turf!
