Nebraska Accepts An Invitation to Join The Big 10
It's done. Nebraska has officially accepted an invitation to join the Big 10 Conference.
I'm in shock... We knew this was going to happen, yet now that it has, I'm not sure what to say, or at least anything that's different than what I've already said about it.
There will be plenty of questions coming up, and we'll deal with them shortly. Probably the most important is - when do we start Big 10 play?
[Update: Nebraska will begin Big 10 play in 2011.]
In any case, Husker fans - we've joined the Big 10. I'd like to hear your comments about it - whether good, bad or indifferent. For Big 10 fans - I guess we're the newest guys on the block, for at least the next few hours.
The University of Nebraska will have a press conference at 4:45 pm to formally announce what's just happened.

Welcome, Nebraska.
At some point during my life, we’ll get revenge for 84-13.
It’ll probably only be a roughing the punter penalty, but it’ll be revenge damn it.

The only problem is
a lot of Husker fans want revenge for all the defensive suck in 2007.
And it’s okay, you’ll probably get us 84-13 in basketball, anyway.

In my top 2-3
Not sure, between that and Ohio State ‘05 (and maybe MSU ’02), which is better. But yeah, as amazing a gameday experience as I’ve ever had.
Welcome, although if your football program and our basketball program are firing on all cylinders, there won’t be many great games between our schools.

ok so...Husker fans, next question...
Who (if anyone) do YOU want to see join our conference next? Would you guys prefer to stay at 12, or does the thought of a 16 team superconference excite you?
And what about the rumors (unlikely, but then again who knows) of Texas, with or without A&M, joining the Big Ten? What about Mizzou? And how about the rumors of the East Coast schools?
No Texas schools
Missery would be interesting, and we could continue out non-rivalry with them. ND of course. Maybe Rutgers, Maryland.
I like the idea of a super conference, hey how about 4 of them, the winners beat in a semi-game, and then those winners play for the NC? Other schools are available to go to bowls. Too simple?

by Trey Hillman's Chin on Jun 11, 2010 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Texas does not want to, nor ever will join.
The reason Perlman said that NU was leaving the Big XII was that Texas would not give the vote of confidence by way of relinquishing their broadcasts to the Big XII.
Aka
Texas wants their own network and WILL NOT join a conference that will not allow that.

I'd like to see
Iowa State, Mizzou and ND join. ISU is really getting shafted in this deal, even worse than Mizzou IMO.
As for Texas, screw ’em. Bed made, nighty night.
"...when the devil says to you: do not drink, answer him: I will drink, and right freely, just because you tell me not to."

no way ISU gets in
they just don’t bring enough prestige and money. At this point, the Big Ten is all about bringing in strong histories and high ratings. Those teams have to meet all of their criteria, which is significantly higher than the ACC, SEC and former Big 12s were. I am not saying that criteria is/was better, but the Big Ten has ridiculous standards.
ISU will not create the revenue necessary to avoid each team getting less money.

Texas would be great
but probably not coming. Seriously, I would love if OU came, but probably not coming. Of the actually possible candidates would be MU. Tons of alumni live in KC, probably nice if KC had the Big Ten Network. And maybe a small connection with a fellow Old big 8 school.
I think Texas and A&M are really long shots
not because they don’t want to join for the money, but they won’t be willing to not have additional power/voting rights (the Big integer will never allow it). I think the best bets to get to 16 eventually are probably Mizzou, Viginina, Maryland and ND.
No one is getting Rubio's rights unless they pry them from our cold dead fingers.

ND and Texas
Really doubt it will happen, but that would be one heck of a conference. BTN revenue will be great regardless, but a BTN featuring 6 of the 7 winningest programs in football would be sick.
I'm more than fine with 12.
But if we must go to 14, I’d like Notre Dame and (I guess) Mizzou. Beyond that, I’m not crazy about anybody.
by Cheeseandcorn on Jun 11, 2010 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions
If the Big 10 really wants to get a leg up on the competition...
Landing the other two “whales” in the mix is the best possible outcome (UT and ND). In the unlikely event that this actually happens, in the 15 & 16 spots I’d prefer Missouri and one of the basketball schools mentioned (KU for selfish NU fandom reasons, but UMD and Cuse would both seem to work as well). Anyone but Rutgers…I sure don’t get that one very much. But I watched Donovan McNabb tear up SUNJ in Piscataway one night, so that may be clouding my vision there.
As some have rightly suggested, taking Texas out of that equation is probably in order. So I think it makes a lot of sense to instead take ND and BC…BC is one school that never really gets much play in these discussions. Maybe the (now) 11/12 public schools would resist that much Catholic private influx at one time. But from an athletic and academic standpoint, I would estimate that BC compares quite favorably to their more eastern counterparts that are part of the current discussion. I would also guess that they’d carry a stronger percentage of their surrounding market than the NJ/NY teams.
One thing I don’t quite get is the whole “screw Texas” sentiment that some NU fans are expressing. I think Pearlman said it best: they’re trying to do what’s best for them and we did the same. No one can deny that assembling the best possible Big 10 would include Texas and Notre Dame…and the goal here seems to be just that. I for one have rather enjoyed the rivalry that has developed between NU and Texas over the Big 12 years (in spite of the fact that they’ve had our number most of the time). Even in our darkest hour, we showed up and played the horns toe to toe right down to the wire…the difference usually being a couple of points and a fortuitous bounce that just happened to always seem to go their way. But after the Big 12 championship, I really thought we had turned the corner on those guys and were ready to even the W/L column a bit with them. Well, either way, at least we have a chance to even it by one game this fall, I guess.
I think the dream slate is
Texas, Virgina, Maryland and Notre Dame. All have an outstanding blend of Academics and Athletics. Neither are really tight together, which should still allow for the Big Ten culture to prevail and not get dilluted like the Big 8’s when it became the Big 12.
No one is getting Rubio's rights unless they pry them from our cold dead fingers.
by TheEvilProfessor on Jun 11, 2010 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions
This.
And (outside of Texas) it’s not all that far-fetched. Rutgers figures to be the one instead of UT. However, the only way this happens is if a)the ACC goes after another Big East member to fill the Rutgers void or b)VaTech gets into the ACC because the Virginia State Legislature (is this sounding familiar?) won’t let the Hoos go anywhere unless the Hokies have a good home.

about the schedule starting in 2011 (if it is true). I can’t wait to see how this all plays out in regards to final expansion teams (12, 14, or 16?) as well as conference alignment. Does it get any better as a Husker fan?
As a PSU fan I am hoping they expand to 14 at minimum but hopefully 16 and then split the conference out like the Big 12 did and add a conference championship game. The Big Ten has suffered not having a conference championship game as their season always seems to end 2-3 weeks before everyone elses who are still playing their conference title games.

Good Luck Nebraska
We don’t really like each other but I will definitely miss the after Thanksgiving battles. Best of luck to you guys in the Big 10 and maybe we will see you down the road.
Nothing but a hunch...
but the Big 10 will stay at 12 for the forseeable future. There’s still no reason for them to expand beyond that number. Aside from that, you seriously jeopardize your product by way of over-extension.
[Osborne's] school has this ultimatum from Texas to either spit or get off the pot. Commit to the Big 12, Texas is saying, or we'll take this Pac-10 offer, rake in more cash and kiss the Big 12 goodbye. It's on you, Nebraska. Texas is good at this sort of thing -- it could blame Cadillac for those Toyota brake problems and get away with it. - Dennis Dodd
by Screwface on Jun 11, 2010 2:57 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
um, yes there is...
..the same reason to expand will exist tomorrow as it did yesterday: making more money. The Big Ten won’t expand just for the sake of expanding, that is true enough. If none of the teams they think will make the conference more money are available/interested, then of course you are right, we will stay at 12.
But the NY market is still untapped, as are many others. If we feel 2 more invites (or 4 more invites) will make more cash than the current setup of 12, then more invites will be coming in a heartbeat.
My own guess is that the conference stays at 12 for, at most, another year. Though I could revise that prediction to say “another week” and probably be just as accurate.

Well, they might, but you’re not helping when you give them no choice but to stay in the Big 12 and lose money or leave and make more.

Ubben is a moron who doesn’t pay attention. He locked into “Texas would stay if you stayed”, and completely ignored the whole explanation given during the press conference.

Nebraska: If we stay and Missouri and Colorado leave, will you stay?
Texas: Well…uh…um…

In my opinion, this is what he's missing
Texas said they would stay, for now. Texas said, yeah, we’ll stay, maybe till 2016 at the least. But after that, hey, who knows? Ubben conveniently left out that part of Perlman’s talk as well.

I have a fix for the Big 10 name issue...
1) add to 16 teams and make the “ig” into a 16.
or, even better
2) add a school from one more state and we have ten states.
I really don’t think that the conference should change their name anyways. There is way too much history and tradition with that name, and it means so much more than the numeral after “Big”. Just my two cents…

As Nebraska claims Texas should be giving it its share of profits despite Nebraska’s irrelevance I’m reminded of the Simpsons
From Last Tap Dance in Springfield:
Vicky: I’m sorry, but giving everyone an equal part when they’re not clearly equal is what again, class?
Girls: Communism!
Why the hell do you even care
about the Big Red?? Does it make you mad that NU decided their own future and UT had nothing to do with it? Go spew your hate elsewhere, we’re tired of it!!

Never mind that Texas and god knows how many other schools were talking about leaving anyways, right? Hypocrite. Don’t let the facts hit you in that behind on the way out of the Big 12.

Love the logic with this moonbat...
How dare you refuse to get bent over by Texahoma. How dare you try to do something about it.
Remember that when you do play USC in Cali, 99.9% of the rest of college football will be rooting for an 9.0 earthquake to hit L.A.
Excuse me for my bellicosity. And spelling. Bellicosity and spelling.

I'll give the troll a crumb... (Warning: strong language)
Nebraska doesn’t give a shit about any Texas school, any Kansas school, any Oklahoma school, Missouri, or Iowa State. I hope they are all relegated to C-USA, the Big East, and the Mountain West.
A lot of 11-1 votes over the years, some we were the one, other times we weren’t. Enough was enough. I’ll feel guilty when I don’t have to pay $45 for a fucking Pay-Per-View game against Western Kentucky!
Get bent you horn-sucking, oil drinking, bull fucking, sister kissing, Jesus-fearing, close-minded, homophobic, sacks of Texas shit.
PEACE THE FUCK OUT!
Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on OUR way out!

Your Farewell tour will be tragic
I would not pay the $45 for the pay per view. You will be relegated to Big 10?12?14? mediocrity the new league will not accept partial qualifiers or JC transferees. Welcome to the perpetual 6-6 season. You just lost your Texas recruiting base. Please refer to your roster.
How many of the recruits
WANTED to play for Nebraska, just because of the storied program, and not the politics? The coaches, program, and history speak for itself!

People that aren't slow...
As a member of the Big 10 that isn’t tOSU you are now a slow power football team. Doesn’t matter what you actually do, it will be slower and more powerful than any other conference in the country.

NU is now the fastest BigTen team. For OSU, playing NU is going to feel more like playing LSU.

Texas must be one of the most OVERRATED football teams in america.
Or the most under achieving. For all of the top 5 recruiting classes they have EVERY year they sure don’t seem to pump out the national titles. With all of that speed and power it should be a cakewalk for a team that plays in the warm weather and has all of them “texas-born” players.

Welcome aboard, but please note
cardinal, scarlet, and crimson are already spoken for; you’ll have to find another particular shade to call your own.
We look forward to seeing you in Madison for a brat and a brew, just 8 short hours away! (though unfortunately straight through Iowa).
just to chime in
Wisconsin bratwurst is awesome. Beer & brat is definitely the way to go if you road trip to Madison. And after the game (if you have space for it between all the beers), some of the locally made ice cream is worth your time too.
And I say all that as an Illini fan. (When you road trip to Champaign, hope you are coming on PORK DAY!)
Greetings from Purdue
Boiler fan here, just wanted to say welcome to the Big Ten! Our conference just became stronger academically and athletically today.

I’m guessing that we haven’t seen the last of him, and I’m also guessing that this year is going to be a very stressful year for Nebraska fans. Keep the faith. And remember a mantra:

but blames NU for killing the Big 12. And he wonders why NU wanted to leave.

Yes
I can’t wait to see how they draw the lines, and schedule games!
The wierdest part will be getting used to playing ISU or Kansas just once in a blue moon. On the flipside, we’ll be seeing teams every year that we used to play on a random occasions. Same with the bowl games. Now we can play Oklahoma or Texas in a big bowl game. When hae we ever done that?
It’s goona be a wild ride this season. A friend a work went to ISU, and we always talk sports. He was so pissed yesterday, you could see the hurt in his eyes. Man…it’s gonna be nuts.

Big 10 Divisions ?
EAST:
Iowa
Illinois
Minnesota
Michigan
Michigan State
Nebraska
WEST:
Ohio State
Wisconsin
Penn State
Northwestern
Purdue
Indiana
um....
How does Nebraska end up in the EAST while Penn State ends up in the WEST?
/facepalm
(Though out of all the touchy-feely good feelings between Nebraska & Big Ten recently, I’ll hold off on any snide comments about “whether they teach geography in Nebraska”) :P
As for my own thoughts, it’s really hard to say, but though EVERYONE seems to think the division will be along East-West…I don’t see that. For the simple reason, there is really no way to do that without sticking 3 of the 4 “power teams” (and I’m counting Nebraska as one of those) in the same division. Any way you slice an East/West split, you are going to have Michigan, OSU, and Penn State all in the east. (They are THE three eastern-most schools out of all 12 in the conference!) I just don’t see the conference putting all three of them in the same division.
I can’t quite wrap my mind around how it would look geographically, but if expansion stays at 12 teams, then I think they are going to find some way to stick OSU & Michigan in one division, and Penn State with Nebraska in the other. Probably the easiest way to do that would be to do a North-South split. Michigan would clearly be north, Nebraska clearly south. As for OSU & PSU, technically Columbus OH is a little bit farther south than State College PA, but it is close enough that you could flip OSU into the north division and PSU into the south and you haven’t committed any egregious geographical blasphemy. That would lead to:
NORTH
Michigan
Ohio State
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Northwestern
SOUTH
Nebraska
Penn State
Iowa
Illinois
Indiana
Purdue
Seems to me that does a pretty good job of balancing out the power. The south limps a little bit compared to the north based on where teams are at RIGHT NOW but if you look a little more historically, say over the last 10-20 years:
- each division has 2 historic, perennial powers
- each division has 2 in the “next tier” (MSU & Wisc up north, Iowa & Illinois down south)
- each division has 2 teams traditionally somewhat weak (Minn & NW, Indiana & Purdue)
Maybe not perfect, but it’s the best plan I can come up with that preserves the yearly meeting between UM-OSU without ditching entirely the concept of geographically-based divisions.
They are more than likely going to an SEC format.
Where you have your divisional games, one permanent “rivalry” game from the other division, and two rotating.

To put it in BigXII format; Nebraska plays Mizzou, Iowa State, KSU, Kansas, and Colorado every year. They would play Oklahoma every year, and a rotating schedule of Texas, Texas A&M, OSU, Texas Tech, and Baylor.

The third paragraph explains everything as it pertains to the SEC.

Geography - No Concern to me - Its all a flight away :)
I was trying to split it evenly (football wise) not necessarily via Geography. The Divisions could be named: Slow and Slower or Great Lakes and Flat-Landers or East and West or North and South. I was aligning them in reference to Football Power Historically as you mentioned above…I have no idea about other sports in the Big Ten.
The Big four PSU, OSU, MICH and Nebraska would have to be split evenly.
I consider Iowa and Wisconsin a possible replacement for Mich due to recent times.
I would like to have Iowa in our Division since it is not TOO Far down the road and should become an instant rivalry (at least in my mind)
Your North / South Version looks good….keeping intact the Old School Big Ten teams in the North Division.
How exactly will they determine the Divisions. Will they even have divisions…will they go to Playoff?
if we are going with random names
I suggest “The Great Lakes Division” and “The Great Plains Division.” Especially if it is a north vs south split.
