The Big Ten Conference has extended initial offers to join the league to four universities including Missouri and Nebraska from the Big 12, according to multiple sources close to the negotiations.

Worth noting
That a lot of the college football stories broken by sports radio stations in the last year or two haven’t held up very well.
Not to say this is wrong – certainly wouldn’t surprise me if it turned out to be true – just something to be taken with a grain of salt.
Whether this is true or not...
…it’s pretty clear the conventional wisdom is moving toward MU and NU definitely getting invites at some point soon. Which means that by 2012, we may be each other’s only historical conference rivals. :-)

It'd be a change no doubt
But personally, I don’t think the Big 14 West would have any idea what hit it. I just don’t see teams like Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota or ahem Illinois matching up very well against Mizzou’s spread or Nebraska’s SEC-style defense.

I'm with you on Minnesota and Illinois
But Wisconsin plays smash-mouth football year in and year out. Not sure they’d match up well with Mizzou, but their OLs and RBs in the ‘90s and ’00s have been about what Nebraska’s were in the ’80s and ’90s.

There's a reason Wisconsin is my favorite Big 10 team
Ok well two. I like Barry Alvarez and Wisconsin reminds me of the Nebraska of old in more ways than one. I’m not sure Wisconsin has the sheer manpower Nebraska did in the mid-90s, but your point is well taken.
Pelini’s defense has mastered the art of stonewalling the spread. A Wisconsin-style power attack WOULD take some getting used to. It would certainly be a dose of irony that in leaving its traditional roots, Nebraska would be playing against a style of football it once adhered to religiously.

of course not!
I wonder if we can keep denying that if we both move to the same conference…… hmmm……

Only if it continues to fire up MU fans
I still hate Texas more.

My gut feeling is that its true
The report seems relatively detailed, and the school choices make perfect sense. Plus the Big 10 didn’t flatly deny it. Sure NU’s saying its not true, but what incentive do have have to state otherwise? Of course I could be completely wrong, but even if this report isn’t true, I would be pretty surprised if those schools don’t get offered at some point.

of Harvey Perlman’s response:
We recognize the intense speculation about conference realignment and the
possible impact it may have on Nebraska. Both Chancellor Harvey Perlman
and Athletic Director Tom Osborne have indicated that the university would
consider any opportunity that would advance the interests of the
university. The University of Nebraska has not been offered any
opportunity to move from the Big 12. We remain committed to the success of
the Big 12 Conference. Until the Big 10 Conference makes and announces its
decision on expansion, the University of Nebraska will have no further
comment and we do not intend to continue to respond further to questions
or speculations on this subject.

by the way
you realize that the Big 10 probably just mailed a certified letter today, which means it’ll take ‘til nearly June to arrive on Harvey Perlman’s desk and that’s given that it’s not lost.

Wouldn't It Be The Ultimate Kick In The Nuts...
If Nebraska beats Texas next season and wins the Big 12 championship, then jumps to the Big 10 at the end of that school year?
I can almost hear Harvey, Tom, and Bo practicing their best “Ah-nuld” impression right now for that magic moment:

"No 00:01 Chances!!"
Dispelled
Here’s a pretty thorough rundown of where & why this rumor may have started. Some KC blowhards doing what they do best – grasping at ratings.

Darn "Internet Reports"
I blame Jon for this here “internet” and it’s reports.

I Used To Listen To Kietzman Years Ago
So I know how he likes to stir things up. But I can dream, can’t I?
I’ve always lived by the motto “all rumors are true unless proven otherwise.”
"No 00:01 Chances!!"
Hardly...
Most of the Omaha media believes that Kietzman’s report is fundamentally true. And since Kietzman also said that nothing can be done officially until the Big Ten votes next month on it, the carefully worded denial doesn’t really deny what Kietzman reported.
Exactly...
…and most of that “dispelled” post was quoting Nick Wright from 610 in Kansas City. It should be noted that 610 is 810’s red-headed step child in sports-talk radio in KC, and will do anything they can to bring 810 down. Thus, the fact that Nick Wright claimed Keitzman was wrong means diddly dick to me.
We'll carry the banner high!
Bring On The Cats
So what you're saying is it was the perfect claim.
There is no way to prove it wrong. In fact, any claim that is made about Big Ten expansion cannot be proved wrong, since everyone will deny everything until the Big Ten votes.
